Alcohol is CH3-CH2OH. It is a neural depressant. It is metabolized to Acetaldehyde by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. This substanse CH3-CH-O is the substance which generates the effect known as a hangover.
This substance is metabolized to Acetic Acid CH3COOH by the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase. Many east asians lack this enzyme and thus have an intolerance to alcohol.
