Well, it’s about that time again. But the last leadership elections created a lot of hurt feelings and a lot of embarrassing over-reactions for many (including me), and I don’t want that for anyone! I was going to ask people about this in PMs or Emails, but I decided against it, since I thought this is something everyone should decide openly together. Private conversations are nice, but something like a leadership election, designed for everyone to have fun should be out in the open. I’m pretty sure of myself in saying that everyone here loves this place, and that we’re beyond thankful to Gary and Scott for setting it up for us. I also know that there is a strong love between us all that lets us enjoy this little hobby of going online and having a good-time—to the point that we’ve all suddenly got these friends that we never even met. The leadership elections are supposed to be part of the spirit of this fun, to be a part of all of us having a good time. If there is still a sense that any election will be contradictory to this, then it goes against the very thing it’s supposed to stand for. Once, I’m told, the fans of the Legion used to be able to elect its leader. When we started the LMB, we decided to do the same thing for our leader. When Kid Prime began the elections here on Legion World, it’s obvious he was thinking the same thing. I’d hate to see the election stop forever though. What do you all think, should there be another election? I’d like to see one, since they can be a lot of fun! I think what’s important is that we remember the spirit of the elections, and the extreme goofiness that is supposed to coincide with them. They shouldn’t be taken seriously, since they’ve always been a joke position with no power and little prestige. What’s everyone else’s opinion? Should they continue? I’d only have these few suggestions: 1. Do not call it “Legion World Leader”, after the events of the last election. Gary and Scott don’t want to have Legion World associated with it, which is something we can all totally understand. The traditional title of “LMB leader” seems to be good for me, since there’s no need to pull our hair out searching for a title. Since you’re all LMBers anyway, I thought it’d be good, but it doesn’t really matter. 2. All nominations should be out in the open, for everyone to see. Just to keep things simple and fun. 3. And the leader doesn’t have to have any qualifications, since there is nothing for him/her to do. They don’t resolve fights, they don’t have to welcome people (since that’s going to get done anyway), etc. So no one should like they’re not qualified . All opinions welcome! Do it for Loser Lad, the old election tyrant. He’d want them to continue!

It's been too easily blown out of proportion ... in either direction. I suggest we forego it.

I'm cool about foregoing it. However, if we DO choose to have another LMB Election, I would want any candidate for the position to nominate HIM or HER self for it. Then you bypass all the wasted time with declined nominations and such and have the candidates get right to telling us why they think they're so shit-all ready to be LMB Leader!

I'd prefer an election, if only for the sake of LMB/Tag Team continuity. In a sense I'd prefer it if we could somehow make it the LMB character that one is voting for, not the person behind the persona. I know that that's not always a clear cut distinction, but that's the ideal I'd like to strive for.
I'd agree with self-nominations. Give people a certain amount of time to declare their candidacy, then let them campaign all they want.
The real question concerns alt-IDs. I'm perfectly happy letting them run, but I think one vote per actual person is to be preferred. How do we insure that without causing undue involvement on behalf of the founders?

Well, for alt ID's, the one vote per person thing would be ideal, and if that's the case, I guess any ID of a person can run. If someone is screwing around with their alt ID's, a very severe outing would be the punishment . I mean, I do know almost all the alt ID's these days . I'm not totally into the self-nominations myself, I want to nominate someone else! What would you say Miner? I hope other people reply though, I'm interested in how people feel.

Might be best to clear it with the nominee first in a PM, just so you know they're OK with the nod. Saves a little hassle later if they aren't planning to "run".

That sounds like it'd be a good idea. Coincidently, I meant what would you say to my nominating you .

Not to try and spoil anyone's fun, but after the disaster of the last election, is it really worth the potention risk?
If you do decide to go ahead with it, then at the very least, it cannot be a "Legion World Leader" election.
And I agree that people should have to nominate themselves, to remove the risk of any hurt feelings regarding who gets nominated.
And perhaps the poll should be held at the LMBP Yahoo!Group. Many of the people who typically vote are already members, and it's easy enough for anyone else to vote. It would also distance the election from LW.
Just a few thoughts.

i would say go for it. It is somewhat of a tradition and as Cobie says its not as if the position is meant to imply any prestige or power. In fact if memory serves it usually ends up with the leader getting a merciless ribbing and in some cases going mad and trying to take over the world Yet there did seem to be some real hurt caused last time around and we should be aware of and responsive to that. So Cru's suggestion that the voting take place on the yahoo home of the LMB would seem to be the most sensible option. The title, if there was to be one, would be leader of the LMBP and not of Legion World and I suppose he / she / or it could set up on Embassy Row next to Spellbinder. As for self nomination or peer nomination well why not allow both? (and no I am not putting myself forward) Anyone want help over on the Yahoo group organizing this let me know. My posting time is limited but I'll do what I can. Cobie maybe you should post your proposal over at the Yahoo group just in case people miss it here

One of the biggest problems with the elections so far is the fact that people have gotten their feelings hurt that they weren't nominated. If we do this, then I think people should only nominate themselves, otherwise we open ourselves up to the same problems as last time. It's not worth that kind of turmoil.

The idea of people nominating themselves is a good one, and settles the problem that you're talking about Cru, but I just don't see many people actually nominating themselves. I guess there'd have to be a lot of coaxing through PM's to get someone to do so.
But I am glad for the feed back. As people can tell, I'd like to see a continuation of the elections.
Maybe even a no-campaign election this time around, similar to the late Baxter v.3 elections?

Just my 2 1. Have most people nominate themselves. If a second party nominates someone, it should be formally "sconded" by the nominee, otherwise it is assumed declined. 2. Make it a LMBP leadership, rather than a LW leadership. 3. Since it is a LMBP leader election, should be posted simultantiouly to usenet, yahoo groups, DC message boards, etc. with votes counted here on legion World (get it? The election would also be a semi-annual LW recruitment drive!!) 4. There should be a gentelman's agreement that nominees are campaigning their user ID personality (which may or may not be different from their natural one) rather than themselves personally. Voters are likewise casting votes on the basis of same. Alt ID's would be welcome to run for election. 5. The honor system will be used to assure that alt ID's are not eligable to vote. The presiding officer of the election shall have sole discrestion to toss out any illegal votes. 6. In order to spread the love a bit, an entire LMBP administration will be voted in including, but not necessarily limited to: leader, deputy leader, substitute leader, substitute auxillary leader, security officer, adult advisor, benefactor, etc.

As the current Co-Leader, I should add my two cents. I feel we should never, ever, ever again hold another election. That way Quis & I get to be Co-Leaders for life! Seriously, I've always enjoyed the elections and would like to see them continue. Although I hadn't discussed it with Quis yet, I was thinking about doing a parody of the Saturn Girl election during the Adventure era...the one where Proty has certain members fulfill a task and the new Leader was the member that figured out the significance of the tasks (and the medallions) My thought was to do a competition for the candidates regarding LMBPer & LWer trivia (along the lines of the "Know You Legion Worlders" thread.) The poster/candidate that answers each question correctly first gets a point and the first candidate to a set number of points (maybe 10) would be the new Leader, with the second place finisher as Deputy. This way no votes are involved and no one's feeling get hurt because they weren't nominated. It all depends on the posters actively participating & posting answers that demonstrate their knowledge (or good guessing!) Quis and I could collaborate on questions (or alternate questions) and keep track of the points. So, what do you all think?

I thought Crujeckie and Lash were the permanent Substitute leader, substitute auxillery leader, etc!
And I'm security officer for life! Like a Supreme Court judge, I can only lose my title if I die or resign!

I think THAT is a FANTASTIC idea!
<edited to say>
Oops, looks like Cobie snick in there on me. The fantastic idea, IMHO, is the Legion trivia contest/scavanger hunt for leader.

Bah! Having cretinous males in power only leads to disaster!
Therefore, I nominate myself-- Thora of Taltar-- to rule your male-centric cadre!
On MY world, which your robot space-probes contacted only a month ago, a superior MATRIARCHAL system exists! There, women are the stronger, dominant sex!

But if he doesn't run, maybe I'll have to toss my hat into the ring. I've got the dirt of 10,000 lifetimes on my opponents, after all!

You and your cretinous afro have next to no chance of winning, many-armed male.
Not when you face me-- Thora of Taltar!
