I had been recommending MyWebpage.netscape.com, for several months now, as a place to store images that could in turn be remote-linked to postings at a forum such as LegionWorld.

All that's required is applying for a "screen name" (AOL, AIM, and CompuServe users already have one) to access and use 20 MB of such Webspace. It's worked well, and all images uploaded to that site still remote-link perfectly.

Yet I've noticed that the graphics for using the File Manager at that site seem to have vanished. Mainly, the buttons for making your choices as to what to do with your files. Has this happened to you?

The biggest missing item is the "Change" button for altering files you've already uploaded -- renaming, moving, deleting. It's vanished entirely in (ironically) Netscape, and only has the x-in-a-box in Internet Explorer.

(The ad banners on each page still work. That's no surprise!)

I re-loaded the illustrations to my Dawny-Lar fanfic story (see "Bits") in my private Webspace at EarthLink, given that the Netscape space is less accessible.

I won't be storing anything else at MyWebpage until it's repaired. With how AOL is slowly casting off Netscape, though, I'm not counting on the space being made available forever.

A bump. Please tell me, is anyone else having trouble using MyWebpage's file storage?

I'm glad this has come up.

Grey, I can't answer your question as I JUST joined up there, but I didn't have any problems storing several images there.

MY problem is I can't access the site from home without a password. When I joined there (on another computer) I was never asked to GIVE a password. WTF? Does this mean I can only access the site from the other computer?

It's been awhile since I've been there, but I recall problems like you guys are describing.

The buttons aren't always visible to me, but I know where they are so it's easy enough to work around it. It all works okay, I just have to be creative smile

Hey Grey,

I recently tried to link an image from my page and it didn't show up, but Cru hooked me up. How did you do that anyway?

Well, I'm more pink than grey, but... wink

When you are in the screen to compose a post, there is an "image" button directly below the box where you are typing the post. It's under the "Instant UBB Code" header. Click that button, and you'll get a pop up window. Type the complete URL for the image you want to post, including http:// Then hit OK, and it will insert the proper formatting into your post.

If I remember correctly, your problem the other day was that there was a space or two in your URL. I think you might have accidentally hit the enter key when typing?

Anyhoo, that's how its done. PM me if you have any questions! smile

I've given up entirely on MyWebpage.netscape.com -- it's not even loading, most of the time, to allow new uploads to the file space, let alone modifying or moving any existing files.

I have deleted my own MyWebpage files and if, for some reason, you read old posts of mine that have missing graphics, that's why. Graphics for my ongoing threads in Bits, such as for fanfic and Dawnstar art, are now coming from my personal EarthLink Web space.

The people at AOL are cutting all things Netscape loose, anyway -- including the browser itself, which will no longer be updated. (Netscape 7.1 is the final version. Future enhancements will only be available by downloading and using what N7 was based upon, the open-source Mozilla browser.)

Almost all the graphics for MyWebpage are now stuck in limbo somewhere on AOL's servers, refusing to load, except for a few stale banner ads. They haven't stopped the service, as such, but it only appears to be a matter of time.

No problems at all? All graphics loading, and all of them promptly, on all of the screens for your using the service, including the "change" buttons? All of the folders, if you use them, opening quickly? Since August, none of that has been happening for me.

It could be that the UK users have the graphics for this service stored in a different location. All that I can tell is that my browsers (Netscape and IE) are trying to get the graphics loaded from some Web location at users.aol.com, and they refuse to load, with only a handful of exceptions.

I haven't seen any announcement that this service will be closed. My prediction of it is based on AOL's not maintaining the Netscape browser and their phasing out some services of the Netscape portal. Also, the e-mailed user messages and Webpage copyright dates aren't being kept current, both usually signs of neglect. And the offering of such storage space without up-to-date ad sales to support it also has been a sign of such a service soon being abandoned.

I have trouble with the graphics loading on my work computer, but they seem to be loading fine on my home computer.

I'm having the same trouble as Cru and Grey from my work PC. Haven't tried it from home but it may be do to firewall settings in place at work. I'll try to remember and try it from home sometime this week.

When I'm at work, and sign into the Screen Name Service, I get an error message when the screen changes to "http://mywebpage.netscape.com/_cqr/login". However, if I then enter the URL "http://mywebpage.netscape.com/_fm", I will get to the screen where I'm supposed to end up, although without the graphics. I can still use it because I remember where the buttons are supposed to be.

When I try to log in from home, however, everything loads properly.

I wonder if Scott is correct about the whole firewall thing? I know that my browser at work has pretty heavy restrictions on it, so maybe...?

Our browsers at work are pretty restrictive as well. Plus you seem to get more info than I do. At best I've gotten the search entry box and a broken link next to it that I assume is the "Go" button. Nothing more. And that took a good 10 minutes to show up.

I've been getting non-loading of graphics and long access times (Scott's 10 minutes has been typical) on a home/office computer that, as yet, has no firewall. (It certainly will when I get broadband.) I can't see any reason why EarthLink, my Net dial-up provider, would exclude graphics from users.aol.com ... though such anomalies are far from rare.

Come to think of it, I've also often had trouble getting to AOL members' home pages in recent years, as well as lost e-mail when sent to AOL members. Maybe EarthLink and AOL don't mix too well.
