"About the slightly older Legionnaires, Dan was determined to draw them as a little bit older, partly because he coaches sports and the high school kids are much bigger now than they used to be, but also because we deliberately wanted to do a story that would evoke both the current and classic legions, even in a small way. A lot of people have tremendous fondness for both versions, and this is the last chance to pay tribute to loyal readers of both, if that makes sense." Hey Cockrum drew teenagers that didn't look like they weighed 90lbs also. I have never liked this post-boot skinny midget look for the Legion. Seeing Monel a few inches shorter than Superman is just painful. Seriously the post-boot Legion always looked small cause they had this manga art style. Jurgens doesn't have that style. Plus these are the biggest, brightest, strongest teens in the universe...31st century at that...i doubt they would be as small as we've seen them. And honestly i don't care about the biology of teenagers in the 31st century...I never cared for the pip-squeak look and think it's part of the reason Legion never sold. Legion of SUPER-HEROES not Legion of Teen Titans. pax Jorge

Thanks for posting that quote, Jorge.
The thing is, the Legion is made up of lots of different body types and features and Dan Jurgens decided not to adhere to that. The art was good overall, but a certain amount of "character" was lost by not giving them the features they've been shown as having for the last few years. At least we've been told by Gail that they were supposed to be older now. Their bodies and features could have changed.

Hey deanlegion, While I love seeing Ultra Boy and Brin drawn like men I admit I got quite used to the skinny Brainy. I haven't read this issue yet but by all the positive responses and spoilers I've read here I can't wait. Jorge

GailMatter-Eater Lad: The Series is a little fanfic Eryk and I write in comic-book-script form over in the BITS o' LEGIONNAIRE BIZ forum here. We make use of many of the neglected or ignored post-boot characters there, like Calorie Queen & Lester SPiffany. We have this running gag on the board where, if we use an idea presented by another poster, we pay them a $5 standard idea fee. Hush-money!

Five bucks? Easiest money I've ever made! The "Took" name came from a misunderstanding on my part. ADVENTURE COMICS # 345 begins with a flashback to the previous issue in which several Legionnaires are watching Nardo kill an unnamed Durlan disguised as Superboy for attempting to break out of the Super-Stalag of Space. Chameleon Boy's thought balloon reads something like, "Nardo got 'took'." Someone pointed out that that was '60s slang (or writer Edmond Hamilton's idea of '60s slang, perhaps) for "taken," meaning that Nardo had been fooled into thinking he'd killed the real Superboy. I thought "Took" sounded more like a Durlan name (what with Reep, and all), so I suggested it for the character, and now it seems to be official in these parts. My minor contribution to Legion Lore.

"Took" is as "officially" in-continuity now as Phantom Lad's appearance in v3!

HWW, I like that logic. "Took" does sound like it could be as Durlan as "Reep"!!

A funny little story...you guys are dead right about the year. I'm not sure how that got messed up, but it's almost certainly my mistake. I apologize. Andy Smith did a terrific job on inking the book, but he's not at all familiar with the Legion. So we got the proofs, and I was carefully going over them for really minor details, trying to catch any nits that we'd missed somehow. And the rest of the team was doing the same. A couple nights later, I actually woke up in the middle of the night thinking, "Uh, oh...no flight rings." And it was true, none of the Legionnaires had flight rings on in the whole book. Andy just hadn't realized that they all wore them 24/7, a perfectly reasonable mistake to make and no harm done. Steve Wacker (who is a terrific editor) was able to get them put into the art, but it just goes to show that even when a lot of people are trying really hard, sometimes you can catch the little mistakes and miss the big ones. THink about it logically tho - If I had a working flight ring, it would take one helluvalot to get me to take it off voluntarily Originally posted by Gail Simone: Steve Wacker (who is a terrific editor) was able to get them put into the art, but it just goes to show that even when a lot of people are trying really hard, sometimes you can catch the little mistakes and miss the big ones. "Was able to get them put into the art"? Umm... huh? Are you talking about 36, 37 & 38 here? Missing them is understandable tho No hard feelings or anythin'

I probably wouldn't have caught it as a gaffe, Gail; Preboot, members could use their willpower to render the rings invisible, whether for religious preferences or by choice. If it's not expressly stated as different postboot, I tend to overlay old Legion lore. But yeah, very funny anecdote! Thanks for sharing! I'll have to go over the issue, see if any of the rings look tacked-on now...

I notice things like that when I sketch. I'll finish something, and think "That looks fine." Then after I've posted it or shown someone, I'll notice the eyes don't line up quite right, or something is just enough out of proportion that it will bug me, even if no one else seems to notice. Luckily, I'm my own worst critic and everyone else is more tolerant of me

I remember some years ago when I was editing a monthly newsletter for one of the groups to which I belong, I spent an entire weekend proofreading it over and over again. Caught lots of typos & mistakes and was very satisfied with the results... ...until the issue hit the mail and I received my copy at home. On the back page, where we always announced the meeting date & time of the next monthly meeting (always the last Tuesday of the month) it said in big bold letters... Tuesday, February 31 I just about died of embarrassment!

An understandable mistake, but what should the date have read? 3004 or 3005? How much older are these Legionnaires intended to be? Just curious. Apologies if the answer was posted earlier, or if it's something you prefer to leave to our vivid imaginations.

[/b]The Legion's on the sliding timescale these days - they are ALWAYS EXACTLY One Thousand Years From Now. It should have been 3004.

The year is nothing more than a topical reference, set 1000 years hence, so it doesn't matter what year is given or how much time is supposed to have lapsed. Stories written at the beginning of the present series were dated 3001, though three years have clearly not passed in continuity.

Thanks, I know about the rolling dates but I was just hoping Gail would be more specific about the Legionnaires ages. In view of all the artistic license being taken of late and the radical changes about to take place, I guess it doesn't really matter.
Does anyone else suspect that Brainy's impending nutiness might be the point of intersection between Gail's and Waid's arcs? I mean, it wouldn't be the first time B5 unleashed a catalysm. Just some early speculation.

Maybe Brainy goes nuts and the new series will take place entirely in his imagination (now why am I afraid someone might actually make that happen?)

Honestly? Just because they're being drawn older doesn't mean they are older. If we assumed every stylistic tic of an artist (and I don't remember Jurgens ever sucessfully drawing anyone of around the Legionnaires' ages) was a real change, then think where that would have left Spider-Man after this fiasco:

I take it the point is that Gail has already implied (re: Thunder, for instance) that this takes place at some distance in the future from DnA's last arc. The question is how far.
