Honestly, my first reaction to this issue was "Kinetix has vocal chords?!" [And she "sounded" neither like realKinetix or terrorformKinetix] Not bad tho - why is Lu the only one standing alone in the top panel on page 20 tho? Surely she should at least be talking to herself? Originally posted by Eryk Davis Ester: Originally posted by jimgallagher: By the way, isn't killing against the Legion code? Of course, if he's ever freed, he dies And can Jarth make any substance other than silver tromium? Since that's what he's apparently made of, maybe that's all he knows how to use the transmutation power for.

At least they focused on Imra. For me, the most disappointing thing about the return of "Jarth" was that we didn't see much of how Spark reacted to the whole thing. That annoys me a bit too. All we have seen is one mention in the Secret Files, and that they're sitting together FINALLY talking in the big group panel. Grr.

I think (and may be mis-remembering) the closest thing we got was the scene at the end of #33 with the twins in the background, Jarth's arm around Ayla. I really, really liked Drake's take that he posted months ago showing how Ayla should have reacted. Of course I can't find the thread to point to know that I'm looking for it.

To the point she got herself killed trying to get things "back to normal". How's she managing to cope with her & Garth being so different now?

I'm assuming that happened post-boot (I've not actually seen that story though I'm sure I have the issue). And I really don't want to know what exam he was going to give Monstress.

Wouldn't that at least be an issue regarding his being readmitted?

There's a real full-fledged constitution? Where did that come from?

I felt like this was a satisfying issue, in an empty-calorie sort of way. Nothing astonishing, but I enjoyed the fact that the Legion came in and executed their plan in good order, with breezy banter all around. There was a measure of closure to the malingering Garth/Imra subplot, and Jo & Tinya and Nura & Thom seem to have reconciled too. And I agree that it was nice to have the Espionage Squad back in action.
My favorite moment of all? Timber Wolf giving Spark the eye in the last group panel. I'm just an old softie at heart I guess.
All in all, not a bad send off for DnA and for Batista and Wallace. I wish them all the best in the future.

Was RJ using his esp in the fight scene? I'd forgotten all about this ability of his since we haven't seen him use it in so long, but in the background of one panel, they showed concentric lines coming out of his head and it looked like he was scrunching up his face in concentration or something. Did anyone else spot that?

I wondered about that myself, but I seriously doubt DnA would care enough about established continuity to throw that bit in.
Also, note that R.J. wasn't given a power-nullifying neck brace.

I noticed that too, but I think if anything it may have been the art team giving us a little "easter egg" that probably wasn't scripted.
I also liked the Giffen-style antenna bindings on Chameleon.

Hey, thanks again man -- I'm flattered you remembered No problem. That scene with Ayla and Garth was the most touching one I've seen in years. Its just too bad that those responsible couldn't have realized how much a simple two or three panel acknowledgement would have meant to us. Or at least me. Something else else like that would have gone a long way in me forgiving the slipshod stories we got in the last run.

Mark Waid (hmm, where I have heard that name lately?) who was co-editor credited Barbara Randall with the writing and research. Paul Levitz was credited as a research consultant. The post-boot one appeared in Legion of Super-Heroes Secret File and Origins #2 from June, 1999. That issue credits the constitution as being adapted from the Who's Who print and Matt Brady and Tom McGraw were responsible for it. This issue, as you all should well know, featured the first appearance of the Blight which eventually brought us to where we are today.

What's annoying about the post-boot Constitution, is that it doesn't fit what we were told about it before it saw print in its entirety.
Most notably, in the issue the thing was drafted (Lgs 37), they made a point of bringing up that there was a clause "encouraging a 'diversity of powers.'" Guess what was missing from the version we saw...

Wham! Bam! Thank you, Ma'am!
This issue was a quickie, satisfying while it was going on, but forgotten once it was over.
DnA need to go back to writing school and master the art of building tension in their stories. If things are just too easy for the Legion, there's no story. After a three-year buildup regarding the Credo and Singularity, they are taken down way too easily and in one of the most cliched endings of all ("See, your leader is really a selfish, smug a--hole who doesn't care about you at all.")
No surprises. No emotional climaxes. Nothing.
I feel so cheap.

HWW, I'm going to disagree with you. DnA did a fine job wrapping up the story. Sure, I wish there was more meat to it, but this is a comic book. I've been rereading my LSH archives, and man some of those stories were simplistic. That is what comics are about. 22 pages to tell a story, sometimes carrying over an issue or two. While I do like the epic tales like Legion Lost, I also appreciate a nice short yarn like this one.
I knew going in that DnA were wrapping it up rather quickly, seeing as how they were pulled of the title. But they managed to give me a complete story that showed just what a force the Legion can be. They didn't waste my time with unnecessary splash pages or extraneous dialouge (ala Foundations.) Short and sweet. That's all I was looking for this month.
Good job guys!
Just spouting off.
