Well they've started issuing evacuation notices and, for once, MVCI (a division of Marriott that I work with) has been proactive and is calling timeshare owners to warn them and help make arrangements if they had plans for this weekend.

I just wanted a place where our Floridians (Vee, Future, Jorge, or anyone I'm missing) can check in as the storm moves in. Hopefully it'll take a sharp right turn into the Atlantic and out to sea.

Hope the storm by-passes you all. I'm going to feature this topic until the storm passes, so that if you guys get a chance to check in, you'll know where to find it.

I'm actually far, far away at school right now, so while I've got nothing to fear I'm definitely worried about Vee, Jorge, Color Kid, and others. Hope all of you FL guys make it through okay...we've all been through enough as it is.

Appreciate the sentiments guys. Frances looks to be at least as bad as Andrew was in '92 with hurricane force winds extrending out for 85 miles on either side. They expect her to reach Category 5 (155+ mph winds) before making landfall.

Projections right now are that it will hit Florida somewhere between Melbourne & Vero Beach sometime tomorrow. We expect to start feeling strong winds in the Orlando area by late tomorrow night into Saturday morning and it should be at it's worst here Saturday PM into Sunday AM. At best we are being told to expect winds in the 70-80 mph range but more likely in the 100-110 mph range. Of course, that could get even worse if it comes right towards us like Charley did (from the SE this time instead of from the SW)

To me, the worst part is that so much debris is still on the ground from the continuing clean up from Charley. That will all turn into projectiles when the winds kick up.

I hope I'm wrong but I expect that at the very least, we'll suffer power outages along the same lines as Charley (I can't stand the thought of being without power for another WEEK! mad ) and damage due to trees coming down again. Of course, if that's all any of us has to deal with I'll consider myself a very lucky person.

There is still time for it to make a turn to the north but if it doesn't do so soon, it will still make landfall somewhere along the east coast of the US.

I'll try to keep you all posted. Good luck Healex, Color Kid, Jorge and everyone else in the path of the storm. Future, I'm super glad to hear that you're back at school now and out of harms way. One less person to worry about.!

Do be careful everyone. We don't need anyone airborne without their flight rings.

My aunt in Melbourne Beach is in the path of this one even more than she was with Charley. I'm hoping we don't lose contact.

Good luck, be safe

Even the aftermath sounds pretty sucky: high temperatures, no power (thus no A/C) probable, the flooding and the mess

UGH

TAKE CARE

To sound the alarm, twist the L on your flight ring -- hopefully someone will be at the monitor board! (was that too geeky?)

Just a quick update for all of you that have expressed concern and interest.

Frances has been downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane (great news!) since passing over the Bahamas seems to have weakened it significantly. Unfortunately, the latest update indicates that it has slowed forward progress even more so. It's now moving at only 5 mph to the WNW (bad news) and heading into open water with temps as high as 86-88 degrees. This makes Frances a prime candidate to rapidly grow back into a Category 3 or 4 hurricane before landfall. It's eye has already begun to reform and tighten (very bad news)

It's current track shows it coming inland somewhere near the Brevard county and Indian River county border (just south of Melbourne and north of Fort Pierce) around Sebastian. However, every update for the past 24 hours has shown it changing course & direction ~ bouncing between WNW & NW tracks. Each change in direction also affects the predicted path so it's very difficult to guess where she's going to go. (Of course, since Frances is such a huge storm, with hurricane force winds extending out 105 miles, it probably doesn't matter all that much what's its exact track will be.)

We've already felt the first bands of high winds and rain here in Orlando. We have been told to expect the winds and rain to continuously build today and into tonight and we should begin experiencing huricanes strength winds (74+ mph) by 8 PM tonight. Worst of all because of the slow forward speed, we should be feeling hurricane force to tropical storm force winds for the 36 hours (as high as 105-110 mph in the Orlando area.)

Frances is also expected to drop anywhere from 12 to 20 inches of rain on us over the course of the next day & a half. Significant flooding is expected throughout the region and coastal areas including Cape Canaveral, Melbourne, Merritt Island, Fort Pierce are anticipating a storm surge of 8-12 feet with waves on top of that as high as 32 feet! Since they will go through two high tides during that time, there will be serious flood damage along the coast.

Grey, I'm sorry to tell you that Melbourne Beach will be very close to the anticipated point of landfall. Brevard County (includes Melbourne Beach) issued mandatory evacuation orders for all barrier island residents so your aunt is probably in a shelter by now. From what I can see of the current conditions in that area, that would be the best place for her to be. Things are already very nasty in Brevard.

My best to her.

Since many of our regular posters have friends or family in FLorida, I'll try to keep you updated as long as I have power.

Keep safe Vee. We're anxiously waiting for the storm to pass and to hear that you and your home have remained untouched by the storm.

Quick update...

I never lost power but my internet connection is very bad. I haven't been able to log on for quite some time and even now I keep losing it.

No serious damage...more trees down...more roof shingles lost...more water damage ins florida room and now in garage.

We're still getting tropical storm force winds blowing through here. This has been a VERY long, excritiating ordeal! Seems like it took days to work its way through here. (Wait...it did take days!)

Can't believe I didn't lose power however laugh That's made it much easier to put up with.

Grey, I hope everything's okay with your aunt. Seems like they took even more of a beating by her on the coast than we did here.

Since there are over 4 million households without power in Florida, I hope that's why none of the other Floridians here have checked in. Healex, Jorge, Color Kid, etc. I've been worrying about you. Let us know how you are when you can.

Glad you came through this one better Vee. I'm hoping the others are doing okay too and are suffering no more than the power outages. You are all still on our minds. Take care.

MSNBC just announced that there are now 6 million people without power in Florida. The 2003 census estimates put the total population of Florida at just over 17 million. That means more than 1/3 of the state is without power. It just boggles the mind.
