Then why is it that the Legion had to reboot or die?

Giffen left with issue 38, his last.

The Bierbaums left with issue 50, their final.

So maybe we shold be looking at the team that replaced them? THEY are the guys whose storylines directly led into Zero Hour. Y'know, when Glorith was altering everyone's ages at random, everyone was adopting totally new and confusing identities and stuff? If there's finger-pointing to be done, let's point them there. TMK had nothing to do with those stories.

Then I'd say Giffen's loss of influence was what did it. After all, L* was hardly the best Legion book out there, and that was just T&M. But this does seem to fit in with where I saw the greatest declines in v4.

Giffen's leaving (in a fit of rage, leaving a destroyed Earth behind) was absolutely a reason why "reboot" was first brought up, I'm sure.

We disagree about Tom & Mary, I loved their issues of L* and their Giffen-less run on LSH too, for the most part.

Actually, wasn't Giffen the first one to suggest a full reboot (after the Superboy Edict?)

And the fact that McCraw & co were handed both books after the reboot suggests they weren't held responsible.

Yes, but when we mention Giffen we always have to bring up "The Hat Trick". That could be a very good reason why he didn't remain.

True. Giffen became disillusioned early on with DC's attempted stifling of his storytelling on LSH (thanks for nothing, Carlin) which led to the mini-boot (see TMK's LSH # 4, 5).

The Bierbaums were fired from both books and left out of the entire "start from scratch" Zero Hour talks. They would certainly have opposed it.

But that all doesn't change the fact that the book had enough sales to warrant twice-monthly shipping and a spinoff series-- during the tenure of Giffen and the Bierbaums, which is what we were discussing.

OK, that's true. I just tend to lump that whole era under one heading - despite its inaccuracies.

Yup, but it's not as if they had any responsibility to keep McCraw & co around either if they'd been held responsible for sales going right down.

I have to say - this STILL looks more like Triad than Shadow Lass to me, even now. Hell, it looks more like Triad than Triplicate Girl does!

(obligatary dig: "as if the Legion was created today?!" Even if you were going to demand a Girl/Lass name, no-one uses triplicate pads any more. And I can't think of any time I've heard a single other use of the word "triplicate" ever. It's a dead word. Obsolete even).

Beuracratically and legally speaking, you often "sign things in triplicate".

And I think that's a lovely Shadow Lass. She is somewhat exotic looking which I think is an important component of Shady's look.

One of the dangers of rebooting is that people have already pidgeon-holed characters into preconceived ideas/notions. When the writers try to take any deviations from those pre-existing character concepts, fans jump all over their back.

I think what is important for all of us to do as fans is that we approach this new version with an open mind and enjoy the stories on their own merits and not compare them to things that happened in the 70's and 80's. What worked back then for stories might not necessarily draw a big crowd of new readers today. That's not to say that they were bad stories, they were good but they were good in a different time period context.

As a hockey fan, I cannot compare Gordie Howe to Steve Yzerman, even though both were/are utterly incredible atheletes and both personified the true spirit of the game and their team like few others of their generations.

I'm sure that Mark will give some characters a familiar feel but he's also going to do a lot of new things with them. We, as fans, need to realize that and be prepared to embrace the change as well as the familiarity. That includes the artwork, which many have already stated that they already like.

Good points SK. I know I ususally like Mark's writing, he brought me back to the Flash for quite a while when usually the character doesn't do anything for me. I've seen posts both pro and con about his time writing the Flash but in general the reaction was overwhelmingly positive, the sales were good and he made the book interesting.

How often is "triad" used, other than in music theory?

"Triplicate" is at least descriptive of her powers, in that it indicates three copies of the same thing. A "triad" is a set of three distinct things.

The only 'Triad' I'd ever heard of before Luornu was the Chinese mafia-like gang. Probably just as well that Waid's distancing her from that association.

Wow.
Don't think there's more to be said other than:
"Can't wait"
and
"wow again"

That five page prologue in PCS has great artwork but really don´t say much about the series(even if page five is awesome). The other previews work better for me.
Still, I´m with A-N Boy, I can´t wait.

hey LL, where is the last page with the Legion members raising with closed fists and shining Legion rings? There is one fist that I cannot figure out who - the one with orange sleeve with black cuff - anyone know who that fist belongs?
