Nah - go with the cooking whisky for Cali.
laugh Anything that has the shops name on it - Spar, Asda, WalMart etc. $4.00 a bottle. You know the stuff.

I'm by no means a connoisseur, but I'll throw in my tuppence worth.

Generally the older it is the more expensive and smoother it is. I haven't graduated to the expensive 25 year old stuff yet - it would be wasted on my palate, I fear.

Taliskers a good malt - one day I might be allowed to try the 25 year old stuff, Tamper. (He says jealously.)

If you want to get ratted then go for the blended Grouse, Bells etc. Cheap, and you can mix it with Coke / lemonade etc. Some people take this as being an insult - f*** them - it's all personal taste.

I've only found one blended whisky that I'll drink - I've got a nice 'vintage' Grouse in my cupboard that I'll have a sip of now and again. Very nice.

Around here, the general idea is that if you don't know your whiskys but you want a good one - go for a MacCallans. They never let you down.

Highland Park is a decent Orcadian malt.I seem to recall that it's peaty a bit like the Laphroig. Both of these are well loved in this neck of the woods. A bit smokey for me though.

JW - my dad likes the black stuff - personally I prefer the red 'export' stuff, I find it smoother. (Yeah, I know - it's a blend, but it was a long time ago.)

My personal all time favourite - Drambuie. Very much along the Chivas line, but sweeter. Classed more as a liquer.
My recommendation for drinking it is to take a small sip, and hold it in your mouth. Swill it round your mouth covering every square millimeter. After a small number of seconds it changes consistency. And texture. And temperature.
Fabulous - the right touch!

BTW Semi - good thread. Cheers!

Your description on page one of the Isley's sounds so delicious that I might have to look in on buying one...

I'll have to keep it hidden and saved for only special occassions though, but a glass of one of these with possible a brief smoke (pipe, cigar, clove--not a smoker, just like the tastes of those) sounds heavenly.

"It is stronger than any scotch I've ever had. It savors of masculinity, a tongue-numbing combination of leather, wood, smoke and age - like drinking the Board of Directors of Standard Oil."

- David Rakoff, describing a single malt he tasted in Scotland

(Heard that this afternoon on an audiobook and laughed out loud.)

It lists in Ontario at 430 dollars for a 700ml (25 oz more or less) bottle. I can't afford it but I was at the tasting bar at the Liquor store.

I got a bonus because she was at the last of the bottle and it was the end of that particular session and they weren't going to open another bottle so I got almost 2 ounces for 6 bucks. It made my day...

I'd like to try a 25 year Islay malt - but I think I'll wait until I'm at a really good restaurant and someone else is paying.

This weeks purchase was a Caol Ila 18 year old. Caol Ila is also an Islay scotch. It's very smooth and well balanced. Not as peaty and smoky as the Lagavulin 16 year old or the Laphrohaig 10 year old, but a wonderful scotch all the same. --- and it better be at $75 a bottle. (This is an expensive hobby!)

FC, that would describe the Laphrohaig 10 year.

I tried your suggestion and I think it's great for the first sip. But then I like to add water. How do the rest of you drink your scotch?

You drink it how you like it Brent - my suggestion was meant purely for the Drambuie.

Personally I prefer my whisky neat.

No, you only earn the honor of wearing a kilt if you succeed. [/b]

I like mine neat in a snifter. Rarely, I'll add a touch water. I tend to palm the the glass and warm the drink if i'm trying to stretch my budget and make the drink last.

In your case LAM, That would be the bottle that says "Blended and Bottled in Australia from imported Scotch Whisky".

I hearby dare Kent to drink a bottle of that stuff.

Regarding the scotch debate: As an old Benson and Hedges cigarette commercial aired here in Australia stated, Tamper, I guess only "the best WILL do"

I quit drinking Scotch after one night when me and my Dad split a bottle.
We wound up hugging and crying and forgiving each other for our past mistakes. The next day we both swore off strong drink.

I'm finding I'm not as fond of the 18 year old Caol Ila. It's nice, but I don't like it as much as the 16 year old Lagavulin. That has to be my favorite. I'd like to try an older Laphroaig, to see how a little mellowing would add to it.
