Maybe he's afraid of stereotyping, maybe he's all "moral" about it...either way it bugs me because I excitedly told a friend of mine that the Legion had a mainstream bisexual superheroine in Lightning Lass (based on the fact that she apparently hit on Magnetic Kid while starting the relationship with Vi).
Bisexuals are criminally under-represented and rarely represented well - the pages and panels I've seen of Lightning Lass displaying her preferences have been tasteful and well-done. It irks me to see that just tossed aside.[/b]The classic Legion that Johns reintroduce in Action pickups after the Giffen/Levitz Magic Wars arc. All the 5 year later stuff - Vi/Ayla stuff is being pushed under the rug.

Infinite Crisis. There are only 52 Earths now. Which makes very little sense no matter how many times you read it.
And at this point I'll have to set up time this weekend to post actual panels as everyone is spouting "facts" around that aren't true.

Thanks NC, I thought maybe that was the answer. I just didn't remember it being destroyed along with being named. That just annoys me on so many levels, beyond the fact that, you know, the reboot Legion should probably be emotionally crippled by the fact that everyone they ever knew including all their families are dead. Apparition, Ultra Boy? Your child's dead, sorry. But be sure to banter with your parallel selves.

You mean Rainbow Girl, right? not Color Kid...Geoff wrote that Color Kid is now blind, thanks to JLE (by Spaceman).

I wasn't so fond of
Click Here For A Spoiler the death of threeboot Sun Boy at Superboy Prime's hand-- or breath.
What's up with the treatment of Dirk from boot to boot? I don't get it.
or
Click Here For A Spoiler the transformation bit involving Livewire. I wish DNA's plans for the character(s) had been a little more respected.
Following that patterning, I wouldn't be surprised if Threeboot Projectra and Brin kick the bucket by #5.
Everything else I pretty much liked, though the Click Here For A Spoiler XS/Tornado Twins/Bart stuff was definitely Superboy-punched into something only barely recognizeable.
Hmmm- maybe *all* the members of that grouping will return to comic book 'life'.
If Earth 247 is destroyed, that means that Winath 247 is too, right? The whole reality's wiped?
If so, that means whoever survives this miniseries most likely will be merging with the Johns-LSH.
It'd be kind of cool if reboot Chuck piloted Legion World into the 'keystone' reality somehow... with folk like the Amazer Insect Queen, Dragonmage, non-screwed-up-in-the-head Dirk Morgna, etc. aboard.

hmmm. i'm not liking it. does that make me a bad person.
well...i'm not disliking it. i'm buying it. but...it seems like a knock off story, like i've read it more or less a couple times before. (mordru's shadow people, a flash coming out of the speed force, etc.)
and....didn't ONE of these legions polish off an army of daxamites and darkseid. (not to mention: time trapper. infinite man. mordru!!!)
and why dosn't brainy need jarth again since earlier in the issue they ARE LOOKING FOR ELEMENT LAD. but conveniently they need light lass. (just a nod to light lass fans methinks)
and i love block, and we haven't seen him for a while but...since when is he so chatty? ha ha
i mean it's still fun. better than the rest, but it has me going "hmmm?"

Upon re-reading this issue and last issue, I was struck by something and decided to prove a hypothesis...I counted and found that, with only one exception, Dawnstar never goes more than three dialogue balloons (counting each doubled-up balloon as a single) without using the word "path." WE GET IT, GEOFF JOHNS, SHE HAS TRACKING POWERS.
(I'm considering finding the maximum number of words between each usage of "path," because that will probably be even more amusing to quantify.)
It's awful enough to be hilarious. It would be drinking-game worthy if it were a movie.
EDIT: I decided to do a count. The most words she uses between usages of the word "path" is 36.

He needs to mention that in order so we don't think she's been included as eye candy, which she's certainly been drawn as.

I doubt it. A hint of what? There aren't two other versions of Dawnstar. I think Johns and Perez just like Dawnstar.

It's Bart on Brainy's cover. I have to go reread all that Tornado Twins nonsense. Didn't make a lot of sense to me the first time.

Still thrilled with this issue btw.
I loved the exchange between Mon-El and Soddam Yat...it was the perfect handling of Mon-El and IMHO, Perez draws the best Mon-El along with Curt Swan.
But the characterization of Mon...the way he just flat owned Yat's victimhood in his typically understated fashion. I love it when they use Mon-El like that. He kind of does that to Superboy to, he just comes off as this incredibly mentally strong character to me when they handle his backstory in that understated way and he is compared to other heroes or villains that think they have had a tough go of it. And he does it without all the angst. He can look and Prime and tell him to stop being wimp over 20 years in limbo...ditto Yat and his thousand year "struggle" with the powers of a god. Yat only thinks he had it tough. Mon-El? He really had it tough. Mon-El made the same journey or actually a harder one, without the benefit of omnipotent power, and he did it with just sheer mental fortitude.
And he's really going to make Prime look mentally weak...if there's anyone that should be able to gain Prime's respect and get through to him, it should be Mon-El. Because 20 years in limbo isn't squat compared to a thousand years in the zone, and he was also at the dawn of time during the Crisis seeing the rules of creation overwritten.
They don't expect that story from him because he has the clean cut boy next door look and an understated demeanor, like he never had a tough day in his life. Yet he had it tougher than anyone, he just handles it better than anyone.
The conclusion is not that he is shallow or lacking layers to his personality, the obvious conclusion is that he's just mentally stronger than most anyone else that has gone through anything like that. Including some guys noted for their heroism and mental strength...
Even Superman, I always get the feeling Superman is just flat in awe of the dignity and grace with which Mon-el handles his fate in the zone. Like deep down he wonders if he could handle it. He probably could, but not with as much seeming ease as Mon-El does. He'd scar easier than Mon-El does.
The guys that aren't impressed by much..are impressed by Mon-El. You might even say he's a Superman's Superman. That's what happened here with Yat, Yat was revelling his in his glorified pity party and Mon-El just owned him and left him as the one in awe.
Yat: blah blah thousand years as a god living on Oa...I've been through so much. Woe is me.
Mon-El: Uh yeah...I was in the zone before you even became ION or even knew what a Green Lantern was, as an immaterial ghost, trapped with the vilest scum of Krypton...and that was before it got really lonely and I was forgotten for a millenia. Do you really want to go here, hero?
Yat: (to himself) Holy cow, he looks and acts like a fratboy(Daxamite equivalent) or something. How the hell did he pull off a thousand years in the Zone and not seem affected by it in the slightest? I barely handled this and I could still interact with people. I don't think I could have done what he did, it's damned impressive. Maybe I should stop feeling sorry for myself so this guy won't think I'm a complete wuss.
Yat: Ok, Mon-El, let's do this :thumbsup.
Mon-El is tougher than Yat, the most powerful GL of them all. There's no doubt about it. They aren't even in the same league.
And it's not something that needs to be focused on or overstated, it's just simply Mon-El, and the way he has sort of written himself into being since he was first created.
I always got the feeling...Mon-El is the most mentally strong of all the Superman types even more mentally strong than the man of steel of himself. I always got the feeling, bend but don't break? Mon-El's never even come close to having to truly bend, he hasn't met something strong enough yet...and if he did it's not something he dwells on or feels the need to talk about much.
Mon-El rules, and it is awesome to have him back in this incarnation. While Johns may be taking some hits on some of his other characterization work...he's writing the definitive and classic Mon-El. The enigmatic one...the legendary one.

The blood bath is coming...... In this issue
Sun Boy (3boot version), poor Dirk never has a chance to shine after Zero Hour
and Oh surprise! Karate Kid II (Myg)
Soon more Karate Kids deaths...
And what about reboot Inferno (Sandy) lost in the present?

I was happy to see Live Wire return.
It was really cool seeing the 3 different versions of Phantom Girl (Apparition) reacting to the 3 versions of Ultra Boy ... exactly what I expected. Awesome!
I loved the whole exchange between the Garths and Aylas regarding the pronunciation of Winath. I chuckled out loud at that one.
I enjoyed the sarcastic verbal exchanges between the various Brainic 5s, those are always fun.
So, 3Boot Sunboy was the first to bite the dust. Oh well, the only thing this version had going for it really was a kick-ass new costume. Maybe the Sunboy left standing will adopt the costume to "honor" the fallen one or whatever.
I was disappointed to see only 1 version of Dream Girl in the "Long Live the Legion" splash page where they're all flying down to the battle. It would have to be that horrid airhead Nura from the reboot. *sigh* I thought the 3boot version (my all-time favorite when Waid wrote her) was alive now (plus we saw her in a group shot in issue #1), so what's up with that?
I like Dawnstar too, but I would be so sad if this mini series was Shakari's swan song.
I can't wait to see what happens next issue!
