All I can say about this series so far is..."It'd be nice to see George Perez actually draw a Legion story."
Not only am I dissapointed, but I'm getting sick of Johns cramming his personal preferences down my throat at the expense of the Legion that I loved and grew up with. I'd rather they remained locked in my dreams.
This series makes me sad.
Oh! For those who really want to know this issues' requisite death, it's <span class="spoiler_containter"><span class="spoiler_wording">Click Here For A Spoiler</span><span class="spoiler_text">Rond Vidar, the next to last Green Lantern who dies just so that Johns can spotlight one of his favorite-has-nothing-to-do-with-the-Legion-GLs Sodam Yat. Yeah, I figured he was the sacrificial lamb as soon as he showed up. Why couldn't it have been Kid Q or Kinetix? Or Dawnstar? Or Dream Boy? or . . .
I predict 2/3 of the Legions being slaughtered and the remaining 1/3 forming a new Legion. Boo hiss! I hope I'm wrong.
I think it REALLY cheapens some of the Legion's top villains <span class="spoiler_containter"><span class="spoiler_wording">Click Here For A Spoiler</span><span class="spoiler_text">[Mordru, Universo, Regulus, the FF]</span></span> to throw in with the likes of <span class="spoiler_containter"><span class="spoiler_wording">Click Here For A Spoiler</span><span class="spoiler_text">"The League of Super Assassins"</span></span> et al.
Next thing you know, the Timetrapper will be asking Ronn Karr for help.

I was disappointed. This felt more like an issue of Infinite Crisis than the Legion. Much of the focus was on the Johns Legion and their characterization feels off. Way towards the end of the second issue the other two Legions finally emerge. Guess what? After that it just felt crowded. I don't follow Johns Green Lantern, so much of what was going on was lost on me. The big death felt gratuitious and like typical crisis fare. We've seen it before. There seem to be a couple of defintie hints that some kind of combination Legion is going to emerge. I'm not too excited by that prospect. We'll see.
A comment on the costumes. In the crowd scenes, Manapul's Cockrum inspired designs as presented by Perez stood out as the best.
Beauty's where you find it. Not just where you bump and grind it.

Rond's scene was done well, I thought-- though I'd rather have seen him linked up with the Brainies on some time-travel scheme or other.
It's going to take some convincing material throughout the rest of the series to make me think that Green Lantern stuff should be here taking away from scenes between interacting Legionnaires of Three Worlds. Or even from interaction between the villains.
I don't think any of the story featuring GLcentric details actually come from what's appeared in the series since Geoff Johns has been writing it, other than the character of Sodam Yat and Superboy-Prime's battles with the Corps.
I'm a little hazy about the reboot LSH's presence in Limbo-- I thought they were shown free from 'whitespace' already... in INFINITE CRISIS, I think? And a panel somewhere else?
Though in that same appearance, I *think* I remember seeing a separate Element Lad and Lightning Lad, so maybe this LSH was 'taken' *before* their last DCU appearance, contrary to pre-publication publicity.
In a way, we seem to be reading events that were happening in the 5YL series as if they happened in a different way. Obviously, there was no Black Dawn event.
Mysa/Mordru are certainly more than reminiscent of what occurred 5YL. And Rond's son (who is the mother, I wonder?)
Reformed baddies like Mekt and Spider-Girl still are on 'evil's' side-- which I find somewhat disappointing.
The zombies and the sceance are nods to stories from 5YL, as well.
Johns has said that the founders, Wildfire, Dawnstar, Polar Boy and Sun Boy (who has *no* opposite from the other Legions, I notice-- while there are *three* baddies who are more or less his counterparts) were going to be receiving the most attention. Therefore, their characterizations *should* be the most compelling.
Were they?
Cosmic Boy's magnetic push-back of Garth and his accompanying speech (which seemed literally dragged out of him), complete with a side-glimpse of Night Girl, was of note. I'm not sure yet what I think of it, but it was handled dramatically.
Not buying 'oldest' Brainy-- he had a *very* healthy ego, but wasn't quite as self-centered as seen here. This Brainy loved his teammates and very occasionally demonstrated it. I'm not getting that from him. He seems all Dox and no Querl.
Love the art-- that spread with the LSV appearing for the first time en masse was beautiful, I thought.
I liked how Mist Master's fog, Storm Boy's clouds and Spider-Girl's hair formed a backdrop, while Sun Emperor, Dr. Regulus (wasn't he dead long before the 'cut'?) and Beauty Blaze really 'popped'.
A thought about the original LSV... we saw several Lightning Lord solo stories over the years. Aside from the somewhat reformed Saturn Queen in the 5YLverse, we never saw Cosmic King or Saturn Queen take on Legionnaires by themselves.
Whatever version appears when all this is over, whenever they appear, I hope there's a few stories of these iconish villains threatening Legionnaires all by their lonesome. This Saturn Queen, with her plastic expression and nasty, nasty POV, would, in particular, make for a fascinating solo-threat.

i like that garth immediately voiced the concerns everyone had with superman's idea. "WHAT?! WHAT ARE YOU NUTS?". i really like his interactions with garth in general, because garth treats him like his friend that he's known since he was little. many characters have a respectful or aloof interaction with superman but with garth we see someone that talks to him like you would to someone you know.
i thought this was AMAZING! mannnn cosmic boy's reply to garth was great and i though the scene was played out perfectly with night girl in the background. i was like "OHH COS ;__;" and it seemed like garth and imra's faces were mirroring my own. perez is, again, not my favorite artist, but i think he does the right things at the right time, and i wasn't confused about what i was seeing or what emotional charge the situations should have, so i appreciate his work on this.
i love that all three querls immediately started fighting, that was amazing. MORE OF THAT. i wish the whole book was THE ADVENTURES OF THREE ANGRY GREEN BOYS. i'm not sure i liked the immediate attack waid-querl had on "grandpa"-querl, that's about my only criticism.
i thought the death was heroic but i wouldn't count him out of the game just yet considering certain stuff.
anyone notice dawnstar smacking a zombie with her wings?! i thought that was pretty cool.
I LOVE ALL QUERLS, THIS GAVE THEM ALL TO ME AND I AM HAPPY. this book could end here and i'd be happy, just ot have adorable querl bitch fest.
saturn queen terrifies me. i like mekt's characterization as the diplomatic one <3 so! this cosmic king has elemental powers! i was wondering whether it'd be like the superman/batman versions we saw where his powers were magnetic *nerdnerd*

How is it that the entire LSV can fly? Are those flight rings that Cosmic King is manufacturing for everyone? What are his powers nowadays? He's obviously not an Element Lad clone anymore. He was shown animating stone lions in Superman/Batman.
I wonder if those GL rings are going to be handed around to everyone too.
I find it hard to believe that even <span class="spoiler_containter"><span class="spoiler_wording">Click Here For A Spoiler</span><span class="spoiler_text">Universo would stand idly by while his son was murdered. He's shown concern for him before. </span></span> I think they're trying to make him too evil to intensify the threat. Nobody is pure evil through and through. If they were, then Superman is nuts if he thinks he can redeem anybody.
REALLY wish Garth would get a haicut. I'm hating his Ragmop Lad look. Hate Lydda's hair too. Emergency haircuts for everyone!

Well, even thought I’m about three weeks behind, I cheated on my CBS and ran out and picked this up just because the Legion is important to me.
I thought it was very exciting and I liked it, and the art was phenomenal-Crisis level stuff. *However* there are a few things that I’m not enjoying. I’ll give my comments (as brief as I can), both good and bad:
(1) Art is simply incredible. Really, this is like Crisis level stuff, even better than JLA/Avengers. George is just knocking it out of the park. You can tell he has a knowledge of the Legion far surpassing anyone else involved in the series these days.
(2) Johns has done a good job with a few of my favorites I haven’t seen in awhile, which is welcome: Dawnstar, Wildfire, Blok and the White Witch. I didn’t quite like Mysa’s comments about ‘getting them all’, however, and hope that’s just trauma talking. Her going evil is akin to an LMB plot and should stay that way. The Mysa I know wouldn’t. Dawny and Wildfire are great though. Even Polar Boy is great. I also hope and expect Sun Boy will have a great plot point at some time in the future and Johns will do something good. After all, it’s the only Dirk involved in the whole thing and his character as a whole has been woefully under-utilized and misused in the last, oh, 20 years. And great to see Mon & Shady doing something.
In fact, it was great to see George draw Tinya, Vi, Brin, etc, even if they’ve only had brief moments.
(3) On that same notion, however, I’m still feeling that Lightning Lad and Brainiac 5 are being written way out of character. Brainy, I can see some type of reasoning behind it that happened off panel with Colu, but that doesn’t take away how annoying it is. They have him acting more like the Brainy of the Reboot and Threeboot. For Garth, its just plain out of character. He’s acting like Livewire from Legionnaires and the Reboot. The real Garth is much more heroic, not spouting off at the mouth every ten minutes. There are quite a few other Legionnaires that might do that, but not Garth.
(4) I didn’t realize how glad I’d be to see the Reboot again. I’m glad they’re all together, and from the looks of it, have picked up right where it left off: Jarth, Zoe terraformed, etc. Of course, some of that is annoying, but I can live with it and hope one day it’d all be fixed. But it was great to see so many of those characters, who I have a much greater affinity for than the threeboot.
(5) Threeboot Brainy reminded me how much I think he’s a much inferior character to Preboot v.2 Brainy and Reboot Brainy.
(6) Rond’s death wasn’t much of a surprise—the minute I saw him, like most of us, I knew he was a goner, mainly because Johns has his own plans for the GLs. I know he’s trying to build a great tapestry in the DCU and I kind of like that, but part of me also feels like Nighty does: what the hell does Sodom Yat have to do with the Legion? I’m torn. I know new fans MUST be brought in for the Legion to survive and I hate the Legion fans elitist attitude thing, but on the other hand, I’m looking for a Legion story, y’know? Not a DCU story. Anyway, getting to Rond’s death—it was tragic, but courageous, etc. I wish I had more emotion to give, but DC and Marvel have drained me of it these last few years, and I feel more like Joseph Stalin these days counting statistics than feeling any real relevance with comic book deaths unless they are truly superbly done. Universo was very cold though, and I thought that was a fitting scene.
(7) I also don’t like the idea of Mordru and the Fatal Five teaming up with the LOSV, let alone second stringers like the League of Super-Assassins and the ‘Justice League’ (who lets face it, are second stringers other than Earth Man). To me, Mordru is DC’s ultimate badass magical badguy, who essentially could take on the LSH and the LOSV of all there worlds at the same time if he wanted. He should be strong enough to actually gain sentience, come out of the comic book and punch me in the face in real life. So I don’t like Superboy Prime getting mouthy with him.
(8) The Time Trapper briefly appeared here, but I still have hopes his appearances will lead to good scenes in whatever form: confrontation, answers, Mon kicking his ass again, etc.
I like it, I do, but its no Great Darkness Saga. There are some glaring things that I don’t love. If Legionnaires start dying like crazy, I’ll be furious though, and the lack of trust I feel for DC makes me feel like I’m walking on eggshells still. Until I know Blok, Dawnstar, Gates, reboot ‘whoever’, etc are going to be killed off for no reason, then I just can’t commit my full enjoyment.
But damn that art if nice.

And the Superman/Batman version was an alternate reality version and probably didn't share the same powers. I just resent the fact that this is a Superboy-Prime/Sodam Yat adventure with the Legion as a backdrop. The focus should be on the Legions. Besides the Brainy's we get NO interactions. Not that we weren't being told that this wouldn't star everyone but the Legion from the start...I still had a bit of hope. This series sucks for me thus far with little hope that it'll get any better before the end.

Yeah, Perez is a master of pacing and using different angles to highlight emotions and dialogue. Its become a lost art (Giffen does it too), where the artist actually makes the storytelling much clearer rather than the opposite.

I generally liked it, with a few uneven parts.
I'm with others in not buying the "Garth: Hot-head" characterisation, but it was at least addressed in the dialogue/fight with Cos.
Speaking of, Cos's breakdown was actually well done if put in the context that everyone's probably pretty emotional after the death of Brande.
GATES! WILDFIRE! MYSA! BLOK! (Sorry, couldn't contain myself)
I thought the Dawny/Wildfire strain was a good nod to about where their relationship was around the break, but I'd like to see them move this one forward one way or the other soon.
I was surprised to see Rond kill Lazon (is that only lethal force he used?), but otherwise thought it was a good "Final Stand" moment. I prefer geeky, time institute Rond to bad-ass GL, but if we needed a sacrifice to underline the threat of the LSV, I can live with this (whether we DO need that sacrifice is another topic for debate however).
Three Brainys was fun and all, but don't you think there'd be a bigger sense of urgency on the part of everyone. The new arrivals should be trying to figure out what's going on and the Action Legion should be pretty urgently trying to get the other two into the fray as their teammates are about to get wiped out any second now.
I want to like Sodam Yat, I really do, but I've yet to find him a compelling character and there are others in his power level more appropriate for a Legion title to turn to (How fun would it be to go find Duplicate Boy or Dev-Em or even Thunder)

I thought this issue was very good. Cos's outburst, the Brainiacs arguing, the sub-teams working secretly on Brainy's plan while the powerhouses hold the line against the LSV, all worked for me. The little "fan service" touches -the rival magicians having been killed by Mordru, the very detailed mission souveniers in the JLA cave...I like it. I like it a lot.
I'm totally confused by the crystal ball...I know the pre-Crisis JLA/JSA team-ups were cross-dimensional, and I know there's now an Earth-2 JSA again, but I thought that the JLA/JSA crossovers in JLA continuity were between the two teams on the same Earth. Maybe we're being set up for a revealation that the "Lightning Saga" Legion is actually the future of "Earth-1", and the actual future of "New Earth" is the threeboot Legion ("more important than we realize")?
Geoff does like his own GL inventions, between Sodam Yat and Rainbow Girl controlling the "emotional spectrum" (in the Action storyline). But I don't feel like they're overshadowing the Legion...yet.

Geoff Johns may have further developed Sodam Yat, but he didn't create the character. Alan Moore did.
Watching television is not an activity.

To be fair, Moore more or less threw out the idea of a Daxamite GL named Sodam Yat as a prophecy made to Abin Sur in a flashback tale. The character never made an on-panel appearance written by Moore - supposedly he used the character in his "Twilight of the Superheroes" proposal that never got off the ground. His personality and appearance were devised for his recent introduction to the DCU. It was basically an obscure and undeveloped concept that was picked up and expanded.

I think Johns is getting his Hags confused.
In Adv. 351, White Witch says that Evillo tansformed her into the Hag with "an evil essence." Dream Girl restored her youth in the same issue. How and when then did Mordru transform her from the Hag into "a beautiful mystic"?
Is Johns thinking of the reboot White Witch who was also a hag when we first met her?
