In being a third Action epilogue? Inspid, at best. Actual flashbacks of the undocumented 'Legion of Three Worlds' mission they were talking about? Awesome, at the very least.

All in all, was #1 as tediously ho-hum like the build-up in Final Crisis #1?

"For some reason I can't explain or understand, and probably never will... EVERYTHING comes from SUPERMAN." - Alexander Luthor, Jr.

Unfortunately, the Legion is no exception.

Hmmmm.... FC:L3W must stand for something other than the Legion of 3 Worlds because I thought that was not good at all.

Here's hoping that Marvel throws buckets of money at Johns when his exclusive contract is up...

I'm reserving judgment for Lo3W. A lot happened and I dislike Superboy Prime as a villain. I also have a lot of trepidation that the entire series is going to just be an excuse to kill a lot of Legionnaires.

A few specific questions and comments:
Click Here For A SpoilerWould someone explain how we got from the Action story to the UP trying to disband the Legion? The Legion stopped an intergalactic war. Wouldn't the UP be grateful?

How did McCauley get into the UP meeting, let alone with a weapon? How did he know Brande was going to make his surprise appearance? Is that all supposed to have been set up by the Time Trapper? (Also, if the Time Trapper can simply age someone to death, as he appeared to do with McCauley, couldn't he have done that to the Legion?)

One thing I really hated: Myg leading the argument against the Legion. I know he was a minor character, but I always liked Myg. Also, what world was he representing? I can't imagine Lythyl obtaining UP membership.

A few curiousities. Nemesis Kid is shown as part of the LSV. Since Karate Kid was alive in this continuity, is Nemesis Kid alive?

Sun Boy, Dream Girl and Dream Boy(ugh) are shown in the Threeboot Legion. I'm curious how that fits with Threeboot continuity, particularly in light of the recent hints that Shooter has given about the upcoming issues.

I suspect that Click Here For A SpoilerDream Boy and Sneckie are there to inflate the body count.

Another thought.

Click Here For A SpoilerBased on the splash pages, the combined Legions would have the following members:

Superman (action)
Mon-El (x3)
Ultra Boy (x3)
Supergirl (threeboot)
Thunder (reboot)
Andromeda (reboot)
Blok (action)
Wildfire (reboot and possibly action, if he is found)
Ferro (reboot)
Monstress (reboot)

Shouldn't that be enough to defeat Superboy Prime?

That list does not include the three Colossal Boys and three Timber Wolfs (or should that be Timber Wolves) who all have super strength?

Also, if Superboy Prime is such an immediate threat, couldn't the Legion recreate Earthman's machine and use one of the Sun Boys to turn the sun red long enough to de-power Superboy Prime?

Do y'all know whether there are gonna be two variant covers for each of the five issues, or is it a one-time thing for the first issue?

If it follows the other FINAL CRISIS spin-offs, then yes. It will have two covers per issue.

Monstress and the modified Sneckie never saw the same page, correct? So I suspect there's still some alternate Earth stuff going on, not necessaril the three Legions we know or it was just an editing oversight?

Could turn into a good game of look for the mistake?

Started slow butthen a lot happened. Nothing to get me interested in S-P, seems a bit of a joke really. Mostly predictable, constructed more than clever but I thought the last panel interesting.

That artist is a keeper though. Anyone ever hear of him? wink

I agree with Matthew. It was good. I've yet to fully embrace the "Lightning Saga/Action/classic/orginal/approximation" Legion. I'm not a big Superboy Prime fan. As much as I love Perez, his art represents the past and I think the Legion should be a forward looking book. I've been burned by way too many of DC's recent crossover events. So I was taking a lot of baggage with me into this first issue. Within a few pages, though, I was totally absorbed in the story.

There were so many nice touches. The dialouge was good. Some nice characterization and it was an interesting story. I'm not sure at all where it is going. The creative team obvioulsy worked hard on this issue and put a lot of thought into it. It would be easy to get all analytical and find reasons not to like certain things. I'm sure I will find plenty to nitpick when I take the time to think about it. I'm still cautious and fear that it could go off course. But for now, I'm satisified. I picked up a comic book at the end of a busy day and got drawn into a fascinating world. I was rooting for the Legion and they really did feel like old friends. Here's hoping that feeling holds up throughout the series.

I knew somebody was going to bring this up. In fact, there are lots of discrepancies of that type in the shots of the reboot and threeboot Legions.

My best analysis is that those panels are supposed to represent the entire history of those teams and not be snapshots of them at any one time.

Consider Magno, for instance. He was a powered member of the team for approximately thirty seconds, but there he is with Andromeda and Shikari, neither of whose memberships did his coincide with, and neither of them even met each other as far as I know. We could list stuff like this forever, but I can't see it meaning anything.

Well, you can't go too wrong with a George Perez drawn Legion story, so I did enjoy it.

The revisionist histories are grading my nerves a bit...Click Here For A SpoilerSuperboy-Prime as the LSV's inspiration? And the idea that Brainiac 5 would imediately decide to recruit the other two published Legion's is too much of a leap in logic. I get that they met before, but why would that be the go to move? Why wouldn't the Earth=Man conflict be the "Let's get the other two Legions we met and have them save our Legion!" catalyst? Not to mention that they are much younger than than the Action Legion. Why not from a similar time frame as theirs?

Based on Superman's comment at the end...this series will end in a reboot that has Superboy [minus the Prime] become the inspiration to a merged Legion that has the XS and other reboot members in a very Original Legion-esque Legion.

It was also sad to see his Brande die without his son there to comfort him.

DO NOT LOOK AT THE IMAGES BELOW IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED!

These four images are my favorite among all the beautiful pages...

Don't the non-Frank costumes look infinitely better! What were they thinking changing them?

Why do they have Zoe as a Zombie, but show non-merged Live Wire/Element Lad? Odd choices.

No Theena, Matter-Eater Lad, Wildfire or Gazelle... frown

I have to say I was......disappointed in this issue. I like Perez and Johns but the Superboy Prime scenes were corny.....and lame to me.

I really really dislike Superboy Prime.....he is like Vulcan from the X-Men.....all those lame speeches...." I will kill Superman!." Ugg

Dunno not a good start for me.....I think I might just browse through the next issue instead of buying it....maybe I just had too high of expectations......

Wonder where Dream Girl is at....seems she is missing.

Seeing these preview pages (thank you Gary!!!) I can't imagine being disappointed by this. The art is incredible (the best I've seen in years), and the references to all the Legion histories are just exciting. I'm not one to care about the small details and whether there are mistakes in continuity (it's a comic book!). I'm just excited to see the spirit of the Legion I loved return. This is the best thing to happen in the last 20 years. I just hope it doesn't end badly....

I just want to add that chronology IS a big deal here, because this is what this book is SUPPOSED to be solving. If it creates a whole new mess (especially an amalgamated Legion), it is Zero Hour all over again (probably the most botched crossover event ever).

Couldn't disagree more. The book is supposed to be a story--entertaining, inspiring, maybe even enlightening.

If it fixes continuity that's a bonus and only a bonus. But it just has to fix the broad strokes. The details are just details; ignore them and they'll go away.

Having said that, I haven't noticed any problems with chronology or continuity in the first issue. At least, no new ones. There are still points of difference between Johns's Legion's history and original Legion history. But that's a known problem and has any number of explanations.

I think for some to enjoy the issue they will have to take Matthew E's thought, that these are not "snapshots" but sort of symbolic representations. Legion fans are proudly anal and we might have to set that aside.

Also, the major villain is not a small detail and my take on the posts so far is that those that can accept S-P as a character will enjoy this run without too many reservations and those that cannot accept S-P will probably enjoy revisiting the various legions but will not like the plotline or overall.

Just my take.

Geoff John's wrote one of my favorite comic runs ever on Flash but his trend to write gratuitous blood and violence always gets in my way of enjoying other aspects of his work. One can generally expect at least one beheading, lol.

At best, my view of the issue is that it wasn't "filler." Plenty of story and stopped at just the right place. Good cliff hanger. But before that, the story just hasn't grabbed me (yet?), no matter how well written.

Click Here For A SpoilerSuperboy Prime was already shown to be too powerful for virtually the entire heroic roster of the 21st Century DC Uni, so no, he's really not that easy to defeat, not even for the Legion. While many elements of the Pre Crisis DC Universe are back, the Pre Crisis power levels of Daxamites and Kryptonians are not...except for Superboy Prime. He's basically as powerful as the Silver Age Superman.

You make a good point about the Sunboys, but even though Red Sun Radiation has been shown to be the only thing that can stop him, since he's from a parallel universe even Red Sun Radiation isn't immeditatlely effecttive against him. He was still powerful enough to kill Kal-L after being put through a Red Sun in IC.

Magic doesn't work against him either, neither does Kryptonite from this Univrse.

I think Action Dirk probably could stop him, except his powers seem to be burnt out. I'm not sure the other Sunboys have the power of the Action one.

Ultimately, it's about that they want 5 issues out of this and not 1

I just realize who S-P reminds me off.

Olvir.

I would say the way to defeat S-P is probably to threaten a good old fashioned spanking, but Supes is looking towards a more liberal approach.

Spare the rod... I'm warning you Supes, this kid is going to move into your basement.

Of course it is about writing a decent story, but Johns has stated that this is a story where he wants to tie Legion holes and get them back at the core of DCU. If it is supposed to be just a great exploration of Legion and al., do it as Elseworlds (as I really think Legion should be moving closer to).

As some have pointed out here (I haven't read L3W yet) there are enough loosen points from Action and Lightning Saga to fill a dam.

I enjoyed it, but this issue was definitely written for folks new to the Legion moreso than Legion Fans. If you look at it from that perspective it worked pretty well.

As for the continuity stuff, guys, the Legion sells 27k a month, they aren't gearing this maxiseries to appease us as a fanbase. They are trying to bring back an approximation of the Legion that was worth gearing a maxi-series around, seeing if it still has appeal, and Legion fans wise, hopefully uniting the fan base as best tehy can.

Continuity matters more when people don't like what was done...if they like what is done the continuity won't matter near as much. People will find reasons to justify their dislike of something, and they will overlook stuff to justify liking something.

No one is going to care about continuity discrpancies about the ZH and 3boot Legions except for the few hardcore fans of those versions...they sold 25k per month, that's not walk on eggshell territory.

This is definitely more about bringing new fans to the Legion than it is about pleasing the old ones...

The injoke about Superboy Prime is that Johns gives him the personality of whining internet comicbook fans....

Note how he complained about Gary Frank's costume redesigns(I actually agreed with him on that one :lmao).

It's going to be funny if he says the female Legionaires look like meth addicts :lmao

But basically his personality, he's an internet fanboy with the powers of Superman. His whineyness is deliberate on the part of Johns.
