What if we come to Memphis to pick you up? Might have to take an extra week off of work but it'd be worth it.

WOW, Scott, you would do that?
I'm really hoping this whole get-together DOES pan out, it seems criminal that we haven't all gotten together!

If it would get you to go? Sure! And Caroline likes long car trips.

Now, a warning-- I know how I am. I love to plan things with good intentions but when the time comes around I just let it slide. This comes, I am sure, from being on my own for so long.
What I need is someone to nag me semi-constantly about this to ensure I do stay motivated and keep my ass in gear.

I'm not so sure about the train any more. My hubby and I might make it a three-legged trip with a visit to relatives in Oregon, and a train would add too many extra days, but the con is a possibility. It all depends on his job situation (a little up in the air right now).
We'd definitely want roomies to share hotel costs. And, Matt, there's a lot to do. I've been to cons where they did spouse's days out, so while you're geeking out, he could be out and about with the others who think they're a tad more sane than we are. And best of all, there's a shipping place right there at the convention center so you can just mail all your purchases home and not worry about getting them on the plane -- or at least there was three years ago.

If it's July 22-25, I probably won't be able to make it.

I'll make it down from L.A. for at least two days and one night, methinks. It'd help if we settled on a likely date for an evening link-up at a restaurant, etc., so that those of us who aren't buying a full-Con pass can shape our own plans.

Just made our reservations for San Diego. Got a room at a Residence Inn using my associate room rate (although not as low as it should be) for July 20 thru the 26th so we'll be there a couple of days early to get used to the area. Its been about 30 years since I've been to California.
The hotel is about 14 miles away but since we'll be driving its worth the savings to me over the gouging of the hotels in the convention area.
So, anyone else still considering going? I've got at least 2 other on-line friends going. It sure would be nice to get together with everyone.

I really really really want to go. Any of you southerners wanna link up for a road trip? Go in together and rent a car? Stay in cheap motels along the way? Crash with our resident Californians once we arrive?

We still need to register but have plenty of time before the April deadline to get the cheap rate. I want to get our taxes completed so I can get a budget worked out before getting too far into it. So far, though, it doesn't look like it will be a problem.

Sigh... I would so love to be a part of this. (So I guess I better start planning soon - it's a bit more organising coming from OZ than elsewhere in the US.)

What do you mean by register? Can you not like, pay admission at the door?
(I've never been to a big con, just po-dunk ones where you paid a cover at the door)

You can, but it's definitely not recommended. You pay a higher rate and will have to wait in line for hours. If you get your tickets in advance, you get them cheaper, and usually (I don't remember for this one) you can get in an hour earlier each day. With a con this big, that can be a godsend for lining up commissions or just having browsing time without getting trampled when you squat down to look at the quarter boxes.
