I like trains a lot. I could join you in Martinez (which is about 30 miles from San Francisco). Although, it might be more fun to fly to Chicago and hop the train there for a longer ride.

This could be just like the train ride in "Some Like It Hot" (which actually was filmed in San Diego).

What a zany and cool idea!!!

Question is, how will we link our Uniter Kingdom and Canadian friends?

How big is your car? Looks like there are 5-6 people interested so far, plus associated spouces, significant others, and luggage.

Maybe yu could join us on the last leg from LA to SD?

The Canadians in Ontario and east of Ontario can take VIA Rail to Chicago. There is a change of trains I believe at the Border (Windsor/Detroit) so they could hook up with Suddenly Seymour there.

Sounds like a plan!

Also, would there be any significant layovers in any of the cities? It'd be a shame to travel through so much of America without stopping to see at least a FEW of the sights!

Airplane to NYC I guess, train to Boston, and meet the New England Contingent there, or else train to New Orleans to meet the southern contingent and we all meet in Chicago.

Perhaps we should have a big Chicago party! And then start the "together" leg of out journey the next day!

I'm liking this idea more and more!

Caroline says if there is a day layover at least in SLC we can all go up to Park City. I could probably wrangle us a condo. They have a couple of great pubs up there in the mountains.

I have been playing with timetables, and think yours is probably the best idea. Everyone take whatever means they prefer to get them to Chicago (I'll stil plan on taking trains from Maine to there through Boston.) We can then have a multi hour layover to allow everyone a good arrival window. Party time for the early arrivers. Then we can all take the train from Chicago to LA together via whatever route will accomodate the most people. If we are not locked into going through Salt Lake there are several routes, although the Salt Lake route appears to be the most direct.

No layover in Salt Lake that I can see. I am just goofing around on Amtrak.com BTW. The only train through Salt Lake is The California Zephyr (we will just have to rechristian it The Nova Express wink ) which runs direct from Chicago to California. So no layover in SLC to change trains, just a stop to board new riders.

LWers from Maritimes could easily get to Boston, Toronto people to Chicago. I don't know if Chicago or Boston would be easier for Ottawa area people. I think that Juan is in Vancouver - a run down the west coast. Don't know if there's anyone here from Montreal or the Prairies.

I could be part of the anchor team meeting y'all at the restored Union Station in Los Angeles. (Or at LAX, if you don't mind being groped in your private parts and taking your shoes off for the Heimatsicherheitsamt.)

You will probably want to rent a car in L.A. or San Diego, it'd make matters far easier. Hotels are available within walking distance of Comic-Con, though you should be warned, the minimum tariff (even with Con discounts) is $125-150 a night. Nothing is available on the fly or at the last minute in the city and environs that weekend, especially not Motel 6 or Super 8.

The Con is four days, Thursday to Sunday, with a special "Preview" for early birds who want to buy on Wednesday night before dealers are picked over. (You have to buy a four-day advance pass to attend this.)

I'd plan on spending two full days, at least, at the Con, or you're going to be disappointed about what you will miss. This is HUGE, in size and program. For details of Con deadlines, costs, and last year's program (to get an idea of what is offered), try their Website .

I'm quite excited about this. Now everyone has to be especially nice to everyone else for the next 10 months. It won't work if we all hate each other by then. smile

i'm still down to pick a couple of you up from Union Station in L.A. and drive down to San Diego. I could probably fit three additional people, depending on the amount of baggage. it might be cramped, but i promise a fun ride!

damn hot damn!! I am soooo jealous of you all! I live in Fremont (near San Francisco) and I definitely want to go to SD Comics Convention next year...but it has to depends on my work schedule permitting me to travel...I may be taking a 3 or 6-week training at SDSU (San Diego State University) and I need to find out what dates...if it does happen at the same time yes - I will go for sure. If not, oh well, there's always a next year. smile

I am actually so pee'd off with life at the moment that this seems such an attractive idea I might just go for it.

For this particular Britisher I seem to have a number of options, Flight to Boston, or Chicago or even possibly Toronto (I have a nephew in London Canada) I have always fancied a train trip through the Rockies anyway.

Of course the cost of this is going to be so huge I may need to sell my children into slavery but what the heck.
lol

I go to SD every year, so getting together at the Con or elsewhere works for me.

Boston, Memphis, and Chicago are also doable.

i'd love to go to this !!! and meet all of you !!!

but cost would be pretty high, the ONLY way i could get to go ... would be for PAUL and i to plan our SUMMER holiday, around it !!!

and i'd have to convince him that going to San Diego for a day or so would be good !!!

we are planning on going to America next year, and Los Angeles was one of the cities we wanted to visit again !!! [ we had planned to stay in SANTA MONICA again, maybe 3 days ... and then HOLLYWOOD for 2 !!?? ]

how long is it to SD from there ???

Matthew.

From Santa Monica / Westside L.A. / Hollywood, about 2 hours south along the I-405 and I-5 freeways. Add an hour during morning or evening rushes.

You also have an Amtrak train route from downtown L.A. to downtown San Diego.

My wife and I are going to start socking away money now in the hopes that this will actually happen. Like you, this will have to be our vacation for the year. Actually, it will probably have to be our vacation for the next couple of years.

If Paul is looking for something to do while you and I (along with the other LWMB'ers) geek out at the con, Sheila will be wanting somone to entertain her. With the other pop culture stuff at the Con, she might make a half day before she gets bored, but she certainly won't go 3 of Con only activities, and forget her going to a panel discussion. I'm wondering if maybe the "spouces" might make a day trip to the San Diego Zoo, or some other activity, if they get too bored with us.

The train ride however should be a blast for all!
