besides peoples schedules may interfere with the registration process, someone at the last minute may want to vote. its an extra step somebody has to manage too. a list of known active posters could get clique-ish.
also, campaigning could be limited to specific threads....no need to track people down.

This is just my opinion, but I think that only one "person" should be able to run in an election. For instance, if I were to run, then Crusader could not because both are my IDs. In the case where a person and one of their alts are nominated, the person can choose which ID to allow in the election. That way everyone has a fair chance, and you don't end up with any one person having 3 or 4 slots in the election.

Okay, I'm new to the Convention, and i'm not reading 24 pages just to catch up, but I'm gonna chime in anyways!
I think campaigning for Leader should be strictly confined to election-related threads in the MMB, the shoutbox and (tasteful) sig files. Anything more than that and suddenly the Election overruns the entire board, which I don't think anyone wants. Unsolicited Campaign PM's and the like should be grounds for being barred from the Election.
I kind of like the voter registration idea as well.

It allows people who want to vote to opt in. (and other LW members who think you guys are freaks and weirdos to opt out.) It also gives the candidates a known list of people to court and conversely lets them know who on LW not to bother.
You'd couple this with rules on what's allowable campaigning. Such as restricting electioneering to the board and not e-mail etc. I don't think we've ever had e-mail issues...

Rules should exist before they need to. Better to have a system that's too restrictive and loosen it as you need to rather than try to rein in a situation the has turned into chaos.
That's the Tory way.

I'm just not sure I see the advantage to voter registration, other than giving those in charge of the election a little more time to check up on suspected alt-IDs. But since most alt-IDs are fairly easy to identify, I wouldn't think the problem would be so rampant that the advantages of registration would override the inconvenience.

I don't think we've had PM issues either (at least in Electioneering), but it can't hurt to outlaw it before it happens. I'd suggest that anyone receiving an unsolicited email/PM regarding someone's campaign be encouraged to report it to the Leader/Deputy/whoever the hell is in charge of the election, and that the candidate sending the message be disqualified from the Election. I don't think it'll happen if it's explicitly outlawed prior to the election, but stranger things have happened!

A public list of voters, it gives a target list for people that are fair game to bother with the inanity that is an election.

I kind of like the fact that Legion World has few enough rules that an atmosphere of controlled chaos is the norm.
The rules should never impact on the free flow of insanity and good times.

I don't think people should be bothered at all. If we restrict campaigning to certain clearly marked election threads in the MMB (like "Candidate X's Campaign Thread" and such) then those who wish to participate know where to go, and nobody is hounded about it when and where they don't wish to be.

True but a voter list would give the impartial election administrator a more efficient way to disseminate election information etc.

True, but again, a thread in the MMB has always been enough in the past. Anyone who is interested enough in the election to want to vote in it should be interested enough to read a thread titled "Important Election Announcement" in the MMB without an election coordinator having to seek anyone out. I served as coordinator in LMB elections for the first year and a half of it's existence, and in that time a simple thread on whatever board we were on at the time was always enough to reach any interested parties.
IMO the only thing a registration list would be useful (necessary?)for would be in helping the coordinator decide who is eligible to vote and who is not.

Pretty soon you guys will be formulating rules to be used in writing new rules...

I really think we need a rule about improper power ring usage while the Convention is in session...

When I returned to the convention wasn't there a rule made about use of the pool as a delegate receptacle?

IMO the only thing a registration list would be useful (necessary?)for would be in helping the coordinator decide who is eligible to vote and who is not. Well it gives the process transparency. There can be no accusation of reasons why a vote was disallowed if it ever came to that because the list of electors is there for all to see. Also it gives an opportunity to correct errors in the list before the election.

Now, about the voting... I think that keeping alt-ID's out is a good idea EXCEPT in threads dedicated to candidates. I mean, just in the name of crazy, wacky fun and all that jazz. As someone who only has the one ID, though, I'm 100% behind the one vote per person idea. And I too think a voter registration thing would be a good idea -- not only would it give people an idea of who was interested in voting but it'd give time to check up on whether or not they were alt-ids. Yeah, okay, so there's no new ideas in there but I just woke up!! I'm throwing my faith and support behind you all... except Abin 'cause he threw my baby into the pool. Evil annoying maching.

I'll miss Abin. Unless, of course, you're going to come around on Saturday nights and talk hockey with me. In that case you can do with him what you will...
