And why do ampersands deserve love? Exhibit A: From the archives! Another highlight of Hot Summer Nights... Lancesrealm's Ampersands ditty!

I love the Ampersand! It does more than you think it can! No need to use a silly "and"! Just use an ampersand!
(1st singer) I didn't know what an ampersand was! (2nd singer) How could you not? The world's abuzz! People in Rio are dancing because (chorus) We all love the ampersand!

Yes! And what about the poor programmers? Without the ampersand they'd be lost-- lost, I say!!
Or at least hassled more than they already are.

The ampersand has a long and distinguished history, summarized at widipedia . The ampersand symbol has been found on ancient Roman sources dating to the first century A.D. Marcus Tullius Tiro, Cicero's secretary of 36 years, is credited as its inventor.[2] During this period the symbol was a boxy-looking ligature of the capital letters E and T. Over time the figure became more curved and flowing, until it came to resemble something like the figure above on the right, often called the "italic" ampersand. By the eighth century AD, Western calligraphy was well developed, particularly in forms such as Uncial, Insular script, and Carolingian minuscule. The calligraphers made extensive use of the ampersand because the condensation of a word into a single character made their work easier. During this time the even more condensed ampersand, shown above on the left, was developed. It is often called the "Roman" ampersand. ...et cetera.

I believe the heyday of the ampersand has passed. Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie & Chevrolet -- c'mon, who really owns a Chevrolet (except Cobie)?

Let's not forget CBS's great Monday night lineup, circa 1983: Scarecrow & Mrs. King Kate & Allie Cagney & Lacey
That night was also the home of Newhart, which of course featured Larry, Darryl & Darryl.
And, over on Thursday nights, they were showing Simon & Simon!

Poor Cobie. I own a Cavalier. And I love him. His name is Wally. (What a shock, I know.) But he has great acceleration, so it fits! Anyway, today's ampersand question: Would Sanford and Son's sign have been better looking if it were Sanford & Son? I say yes!

I can't believe no one's mentioned A & W root beer.
Oh, and also: Snoopy & Woodstock, root beer being a natural segue to the famous beagle & bird duo, always over-indulging in it on New Year's Eve (except Woodstock would fall asleep after just a few root beers.)

A&F, for sure.
And who could forget the channel A&E? I don't know what the letters stand for but they have that nifty biography series! And they also show Academy status movies. Groovy stuff!

Not to mention M & M's! They can call them "milk chocolate" if they want, but they'll always be "plain" to me!

I'd love to stick around and discuss the joys of ampersands (go ampersands!), but the S&M Society is meeting in a little bit and they're really strict about being punctual.

I was in Harvard Square one time and there were these two young kids (between 10-14). The younger one wanted to go into the Abercrombie & Fitch store. The older one said "That's a store for gay guys." Caliente, A&E is for Arts & Entertainment
