All this Fataphobia stems from Nardo's fat-assing Tenzil decades ago. Poor Nura felt the effects in TMK...
Damn Nardo and his fataphobic comic fans!

For some reason, I was thinking about Bouncing Boy yesterday. He'd be a lot less silver-age-silly if he didn't look like a beach ball. While some may find this endearing, I don't see why he couldn't have the bouncing/rebounding powers without expanding.
He could still be heavy, but more solid - to the point of super-resilience. Bullets, death rays and mysterious energy blasts would just bounce off him! He could have other powers that I haven't even thought of yet!

I actually think that what would make him seem less "silly" or "Silver Agey" in most people's eyes isn't messing with his powers, but changing his "deflated" form. If he was lean and muscular and stereotypically super-heroic, but his powers allowed him to change shape to the "beach ball" form, I think many people would have less of a problem with him as a character.

But his chubbiness is part of what makes him so endearing!

Personally, I think that if they bring him back, it should be a story in which he saves drowning children by inflating himself, jumping into the water, then allowing them to use his inflated body as a life-raft, the size of which ultimately leads to their discovery and rescue by a passing patrol...
He would then subsequently be known as "Bouncing Buoy".
