I'll have to check to verify, but I think I'm allowed to be grumpy once in a blue moon.

Meanwhile, I'm going to leave the topic of the merits of Bouncing Boy behind for the nonce and focus on what REALLY matters--- Matter-Eater Lad! (pun intended)

I'm ready for the rotundity...the profundity...of Bouncing Boy! As a side note, if Bouncing Boy and Triplicate Girl get together in the Legion WaKverse, it'd be neat to see only one of Lu's persons go out with Chuck, while the other two pursue other men/women/organisms!

The thing about having Bouncing Boy (Matter-Eater Lad & Triplicate Girl/Duo Damsel, for that matter) in the Legion wasn't for silliness, but to show what being a hero really meant. Chuck had "lame" super-powers but was as respected as any member because he did his job like everyone else.

That's what made him and the others like him great and fun to read about. The Legion needs characters like him. Having a group of Superboys invulnerable and all-powerful isn't a Legion I'd enjoy reading about after awhile.

Read Legion Archives #10 (ironically enough) to see both BB and DD shin, before they left the team.

Bouncing Boy's powers should be amped up a bit. He should have the ability to accurately guage the angle of multiple richotets (can't spell) to take his opponents off guard. Also, to get extra speed he should be able to expel air or gas at a very fast rate, just like a deflating balloon. (Now the question remains -- which end would he expell from? wink )

Then he could take Rolaids or Tums to deflate! He could be Bouncing Gaseous Boy! Faster than a chili fart! His amped up powers would be then be to knock out people with his gas powered bouncing! Yes to BB and no to just Chuck please...

There's nothing wrong with Chuck's powers... the writer just needs to use his imagination to make them cool.

Used like Speedball in the New Warriors would be very cool.

Chuck should be Bouncing Boy again!!
C'mon people, what do you have against inflation?

Let's all be inclusive in the 31st C!!

And Tenzil should be Matter-Eater Lad!! I never liked the idea of a guy who could digest anything cooking food for other sentients. You could never complain to him that the food was inedible. It's a concept he couldn't grasp.

Chuck's positive attitude and devotion to the Legion more than made up for what some would call a "lame" super-power. And let's remember, the Legion is full of people would would not be considered unique on their own home planet: "So you have magnetic powers, Rokk? So do 47 million of us...". Granted, Jan and Kal were sole survivors, so they were unique.

Chuck had a power most people wouldn't want, and he used it effectively for the cause. I remember a great issue of Hero Alliance where Victor (basically "Superman" of their universe) discarded a teenaged boy who could see things happen as if they were in slow motion. He couldn't react quickly (his body wasn't fast, only his brain) so Victor said "No thanks" to the kid's request to be trained as a hero. Later he tried to stop a robbery or kidnapping and was killed (he watched the bullet coming at him in slow motion but could do nothing to prevent getting hit by it). Victor is ashamed to realize he could have trained this lad, maybe not as a "hero" but as a referee who was never wrong...etc.

Ya do the best with what'cha got!! We want Chuck (and Tenzil)!

I understand. But I am sure there are more modern silly powers to show the person is a hero.

I look at Cypher of the New Mutants or even Devlin O'Ryan of volume 4. wink

You know, Blacula, I do some of my best work when I'm 'bitter and twisted.' I also find that I'm more likely to get what I need out of an interaction when I'm 'bitter and twisted' than when I'm being nice.

That said, I did take my bitter medicine this morning (it's not a pill, but I do smoke it). Highly recommended for all.

Reboot could be turning into NEGATIVE MAN here, but he's hardly rude and I'm glad that someone is asking about actual costs and investment in the shared fictional reality of the Legion. Since I've been in grad school, my dollars are REAL limited and, as such, I really can't afford to pick up crap.

And how has Geoff Johns managed to skirt the whole powers/costume modern/non-modern issue in JSA? Those old fogeys wear pretty much the same color schemes and have the same gimmicky non-powers that they did in the 1940s (or at least as they did in Roy Thomas's All-Star Squadron and the JSA/JLA team-ups, which is where MOST people got their JSA introduction).

JSA is a PERFECT example for modern vs. not modern powers!

Original Mr. Terrific vs. current with T-spheres!

Hourman I vs. Hourman II with prophecy powers vs. Hourman the android who is like a god.

Atom I midget with some explosion powers? Or just a midget? Atom II can shrink to atomic levels! Atom-Smasher not a midget.

Bouncing Boy vs. Speeball is another one. ohwell. I've been called a troll so I shall stop. smile

I agree with what Cru said, there's nothing wrong with Chuck's power - it's his personality and dedication that made him shine. That said, I certainly wouldn't mind if he were powered up a bit.

Hi Andy/MYG. Reboot may be "asking about actual costs and investment in the shared fictional reality of the Legion" in other threads but he certainly wasn't in this one. Our asking for the return of Bouncing Boy (an important, long-standing, much-loved character in Legion-dom) is a perfectly normal, legitimate request and certainly didn't warrant his facetious, condescending post about bringing back some nobody who *may not even have been in* the panel he was talking about.

We all get bitter and twisted (I've been bitter and twisted for years over what Vi did to Gim Allon!) but to channel his anger at the relaunch into an attack on us here *IS* rude... and that's why I called him out on it.

I hear you. Sorry.
Just didn't want Reboot to be silenced on here just because he brings up some practical points.
I've had a difficult time maintaining my resolve when creators are around. I was just going to drop the book myself, but Kitson's earnest postings, the book's cover revealing a more adult legion, and the other posters on Legion World who love the legion with the same passion and brains have all committed me through the 1st arc.
Reboot's constant (and in some cases, irritating) reminders of the various costs of the reboot are a welcome thorn in my bubble.

Certainly, I never intended to insult you, who I already feel we have a lot in common.

By the way, What did Vi do to Gim Allon? I don't remember...

Vi pretty much killed Gim Allon by granting him his wish to die in battle.

IS THAT HOW HE DIED???

You know, one of the BIG differences between Legion pre-1994 and post-1994, was that the Legionaires USED to talk about their dead, either through untold tales or facing the statues. So readers knew why and how Ferro Lad or Invisible Kid I or Chemical King died, even if we never read an issue with them in it.
I never even saw the issues Gim died in, and didn't really think much of it, largely because I never got the sense the Legionaires did.
Just an observation.

THANKS LASH

Hi again 235 - Andy S! (Man, I gotta stay on my toes to keep up with all these name changes! wink )

Don't worry about it - no apology necessary! We all love the Legion! And I think you and I probably do have a bit in common too! Let's hope the new relaunch doesn't let us down!

Oh yeah, and BBBBB! (Bring Back Bouncing Boy Barry!)
