In no particular order . . .

1. "The Lad Who Wrecked the Legion" (Adventure # 328, reprinted in LSH v. 1 # 1)

My first Legion story ever. Written by Jerry Siegel and drawn by Jim Mooney. Discussed in detail in its own thread.

2. "The War Between Krypton and Earth" (Adventure # 333/LSH v. 1 # 2)

I like the fact that none of the story's combatants are portrayed as villains. Both sides want to do what is right for their own people. Even though both sides attempt to limit the war by not killing, the situation tragically escalates, as do real-world conflicts. Written by Edmond Hamilton and drawn by Curt Swan.

3. "The Great Darkness Saga" (LSH v. 2 # 290-294)

Levitz and Giffen in their prime. A fan boy's dream, this arc features every Legionnaire to that point yet manages to tell a story of epic proportions yet remains coherent and offers surprises.

4. "The Legionnaire Who Killed" (Adventure # 342)

Another story that deals with moral ambiguity and complexity. Star Boy does "the right thing" but not necessarily the best thing by killing a villain. Sometimes heroes don't win. Also by Hamilton and Swan.

5. "The Elements of Heartbreak" (LSH v. 4 # 31)

A story hated by some, loved by others. When I move past the Sean/Shvaughn Profem angle, what stays with me is a very moving story about loneliness and self-acceptance. One of TMK's finest, in my opinion.

Hmmm... my favorites fluctuate on a regular basis, but the ones I keep coming back to are:

1. Earthwar

2. 5 Years Later/The Terra Mosaic

3. The Universo Project

4. Legion Lost (newly added favorite, as I only read it for the first time a couple months back... we'll see if it stands the test of time)

and, of course: 5. The Great Darkness Saga

Wow, I have to reread some of these stories. This is even harder than the hated stories to narrow down. Off the top of my head:

Adv. 350-351, The Outcast Super Heroes and the Forgotten Legion

Adv.357, The Ghost of Ferro Lad

Adv. 359-360, The End of the Legion, and The Legion Chain Gang

Adv. 369-370, Mordru the Merciless, and The Devil's Jury

Superboy 198, The Fatal 5 Who Twisted Time

Great Darkness Saga

Yera/Violet

Death of the Empress (agreed, good story, bad art)

Early 5 year later stuff (how vague is that?)

Garth/Proty

Thinking about all these great stories and supporting characters in the Legion's rich history, it makes me angry all over again that the DC bozos just ditched it all and started over . . . and over . . . and over

Somebody put me in charge, dammit! I'll fix everything laugh

1 - 5 Year Later (LSH v4 1-38 and the Mayfair companion)
2- The Great Darkness Saga
3- The Magic Wars ( I love the concept behind it)
4 -The Legion of Substitute Heroes (Annual #3)
5- The Lad Who Wrecked the Legion (and I think Dynamo Boy will reappear on L3W).

And I think Shooter's current run will be on a top 10 list as it is over.

My favorites, in no particular order, off the top of my head:

"The Legionnaire Who Killed"--Star Boy expelled from the Legion. I first read this story as a reprint in the "100-Page Giant" SUPERBOY #202.
That issue was my introduction to the Legion, and it was great! One issue, and I already knew a major event in the team's history. Also, that issue had a feature that taught me the names and powers of about half the Legionnaires.

Nine issues later--"The Ultimate Revenge": Jan apparently kills Roxxas, except Condo uses his power to drain the ray-gun's battery and then slows Roxxas's metabolism to simulate his death, and when Roxxas recovers, we find out that he WANTED Jan to kill him, because he never could escape the "ghosts" of the Trommites in his own demented mind. One of Shooter's best. Bonus: Iron Mike Grell art. smile

The death of Superboy at the hands of the Time Trapper and the Legion's revenge several issues later [I think of those as one story arc].

LEGION ANNUAL #1 [5YL version]: "Charade", a retelling of the biography of Jo Nah, one of my favorites--and the jaw-dropping surprise that Jo saw through Glorith's plans and tricked Mordru into playing "Let's You and Her Fight".

LEGION #s 15-17: [5YL] The Khunds attack, under Glorith's leadership. The resolution is my favorite part, as those who recognize my signature line have probably guessed already. wink

And Supes-Supes is right: It should have been Kara. [Dammit, they finally brought her back, only to turn her into Britney with superpowers.KAAAAAAHHHHHHHNNNNNN!!!!!!!] mad

"Tenzil for the Defense" lol

As a viewer of the original SNL, I loved the little shot of Tenzil eating "Quarry" cereal. smile
