Viking Legion - a dark Legion or the policemen of the North Atlantic?
Iroquois Legion - I don't know when the Six Nations came into being, but an indigenous American Legion could be a group of youths from different tribes who sought to work together. Don't know enough history to take it any further, but roll it forward a few hundred years and perhaps the European invasion of the Americas could have turned out very differently.

1000 years in the past? In what country/region would they be based? Sung Dynasty China? Pre-Magna Carta England? Arabia? Feudal France? The Holy Roman Empire? I think it would definitely be Europe-based. I can't help but think they'd probably end up as Crusaders... And I'd love to see a Roman Legion story as well, imagine all the fun possibilites! Still, a Roman Legion would *have* to include a lot more deaths than any volume of the Legion has... Actually, on the thousand-years-ago front, I think I'd rather see a Byzantine Legion. It's a part of history that's a lot less explored than the earlier (Western) Roman Empire. Maybe even later still, around the Fall of Constantinople, the last defenders of the city...

I've read the late Evan S. Connell's Deus Lo Volt! a couple of times. I can already tell that any Legion comic set in the 11th Century would be so gory that even whatsisface who does The Walking Dead would be grossed out. ![sigh sigh](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/sigh.gif)

Legion of Empire. Super powered youths sent from their European nations to expand the iron grip of colonisation, engage in espionage and have exotic adventures against rival Empires across the globe.
Rescuing a hugely successful, and now contrite, merchant from assassination, which of them will turn against their nations?

The World in 1013 ADAccording to the article, the major societies in 1013 were: a) The Umayyad caliphate of Spain (whose capital was looted in 2013 - I can see where the Legion can come in there!) b) The Song Dynasty of China c) The Simaili Shiite Dynasty that covered much of North Africa and the western portion of the Middle East Lots of places for a Legion to form and get involved in ![laugh laugh](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/laugh.gif)

If you were picking Legion team's to travel back in time, do you think Tyroc would object being sent to the Song dynasty?

WHY IS THERE SO MUCH FRICKIN TALENT ON THIS WEBSITE AND NONE AT DC!!!!!! This is a great idea .... instead of going to the 21st century a large group goes to the 11th .... Pagan versus Christian wars! Steampunk Legion, Ancient Egypt Legion (touched on in FYL) ... could incorporate aliens too ... like the Hawks, 19th century England ... so much to do ... yet the LSH is stuck on the present and the 3000s. They can timetravel .. yeah let's mix it up!!!!

They could travel to the past to figure out what went wrong with Harmonia.

I really like the idea of them set in Byzantium, as the defenders of the old decaying Roman Empire.
That's also where the Silk Road meets Mediterranean trading routes, so where better for three young people from diverse backgrounds to meet while saving the life of a rich merchant.

Hmmm what about a Legion set 1000 years in the past that is still made up of a collection of spacefaring alien planets, with the Earth member being from the only really technologically primitive world a la Princess Projectra and Orando? Would be interesting seeing the team from that point of view!

Would be interesting seeing the team from that point of view! The modern DCU already sometimes feels like that, with Earth being a gathering place for alien heroes (Superman, Martian Manhunter, Starfire, Icon, Hawkman, various Green Lanterns) and / or heroes who might as well be alien (Amazons, Atlanteans, etc.). A Legion of Super-Heroes spin on the Jason & the Argonauts story, with a ship holding fifty different legendary heroes (many of whom, even in the myth, had 'super-powers') could be a funky retelling of that tale. We've seen a Legion of the Round Table, so a Legion of Argonauts, or a Legion of Immortals could be different ways to mix things up. A tale in which the current Legion got tossed back in time and ended up accidentally inspiring legends that lead to some mythology (castaway Garth, with straggly red beard and long hair, inspires tales of Zeus, hurling thunderbolts around, for instance?) could be funky. It would have to be an Elseworlds, since the DCU already has actual Greek gods, who might not put up with that sort of nonsense (barring some sort of agreement, as with the Marvel Olympians and Eternals).

Earth... home for galactic riff raff and outcasts.
Superman/Manhunter - last of their worlds Starfire/Hawks refugees Hal Jordan - nicely tucked out of the way, until Earth became so important plot wise.

The Legionnaires exploring the Silk Road! Why not?
One bad thing about setting the Legion 1,000 years in the past is that it limits the past cultures we get to see (unless we make it a global gathering of heroes and set it in an alternate universe - but even then we'd need to upgrade the technology of the time period or adding a magical component). Maybe the Legion could be the ones to usher in a new age of global peace and unity. Hmmmm...
