Now that the Legion is being cancelled in 2013, what can we glean from people's expectations of Levitz and the Legion from back in the day?

I was constantly frustrated by A) Decreased page counts and giant, showy splash pages that made detailed storytelling impossible and B) Big-Event crossovers constantly meddling with continuity and what should have been the book's unique flavor.

I honestly don't think that there's any creators who could have made gold from straw under those circumstances. shrug

Someday we may find out the real story of what has been going on inside DC for the last couple of years, and that may help explain a lot. From the outside it looks like a an absolute disaster, where, unless you have a real strong writer-artist-editor team that can work together, and probably fend off the publishers and corporate, the result is unpalatable. Look how awful Superman has been, and SOOO many other books. And ones that have been good but off the beaten path, have withered and died on the vine. And I can't imagine it's been fun to try and write comics in this environment. The only one of the whole bunch that seems able to produce a quality product is Scott Snyder. I get the sense that Levitz had things he WANTED to do (like a new Karate Kid) that editorial didn't want, and in the end, we get what we have gotten for the last 25 years when a series or set of characters winds down, which is an appalling, doomsday, death of characters and universe type story. After Magic Wars, 5YL, Zero Hour, Reboot, Lost, DnA, 3Boot, Shooter, L3W, and now ths atrocity, why would I EVER get invested in a Legion comic again?

...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"
