According to Robinson Mon-El is going to be in his new Justice League lineup and he will have a new uniform that has a Superman S shield on it.

That's something I didn't see coming with the Justice League.

I don't really like the idea of putting that S on Mon. I don't know why they always have to mess with his costume. His costume is awesome as it is. Normally I'd be outraged over the blatant attempt at turning Mon into a Superman imitation, except for the fact that Robinson is writing him and making him pretty unique in the process.

I wouldn't mind seeing Mon in the JLA. I would not want to see a S on his uniform. Although story-wise, it might be something from the Superman storyline where Mon adopts a S in order to be more accepted by the people of Metropolis.

There's a picture of his new uniform now. It actually doesn't look as jarring as I thought it would. I'm also glad they didn't completely revamp his costume. It's basically his traditional one with a small S shield.

It almost looks like they put some thought into it and decided against making it a full size S lest he come off as Superman Red. It designates a connection to the Supes family but not just another Superman imitation.

I think its pretty cool to see Mon with S shield and being a JLA member. and definitely looking forward seeing Donna Troy (kind of spoiler that she is not a Black Lantern or being bitten by Black Lantern...hmmmm)

Not impressed from a uniform POV and not sure what it says from a symbalism POV. A shield can imply part of a police force. Supes going to have his own force?

Maybe they think it will appease the Supes fans that are wondering where their title character went to? I can only imagine it will tick off more than it will impress. Kind of depends upon what backstory they provide I suppose.

Looks like an attempt at a Junior Justice League given the fact that Dick Grayson is now Batman.

Put in the "prefer the costume remain the original" category.

Hmm... I don't know... all this "Zone Free" time is sort of robbing Mon-El of the pathos intrinsic to his character. It's the isolation of the zone that made him who he was in the Legion. A heretofore unknown JLA association... hmm... I just don't know...

I wonder how long it will be before we learn that Booster Gold actually met Mon in the 25th century, during his stint out of the zone during that time period!

Looks to me like the shadow forms are the outlines of Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy (or Congorilla?), Red Arrow, & fifth figure (maybe Cyborg?).

From a Legion-centric point of view, this all seems like a big detour, with Mon-el getting further and further away from where he should be. I certainly agree that the long time he spent imprisoned in the Zone is a key component of Mon-el's character.

It might not be a bad line-up for a new JLA, though. I wonder if Mon and Dick become buddies or antagonists? The Amazon, the Superman and the Bat, 2nd generation - and we know there's a 3rd generation lined up.

We do?
Do you mean Superboy, Red Robin and Wondergirl?

An S shield doesn't bother me, or a costume change, for that matter. This one doesn't look very different, really.

From a 'care about Lar' pov, I enjoy every moment that he has out of the Zone.
It makes more sense, from a personality perspective, for him to have some experience with life and teamwork and being a hero, imo.
He needs something to hold on to, something to turn to during his solitary confinement.

This is just a year (or less) in his life.
He'll still have a thousand yeats in some sort of isolation/prison.

It looks to me that everything Robinson has done with Lar is about teaching him to be a hero. I find it logical and interesting on a few levels. The idea that you have this good, noble character who has been up to now a bookworm, an explorer, a loner, who ends up friends with Superman AND has super-powers, and now feels like he should learn to be a hero. Not really too different from the character themes that Levitz gave him, but I prefer these. During the Levitz era, Mon was all about abandoning his obligations as a hero and going back into his shell. I much prefer to read about him coming out of his shell. And the dramatic tension is always there, because does Lar want to be a hero for himself, or because he loves Superman, owes him his life, and wants to help him out? Finally, whatever happens in the present day DCU not only gives Mon the training to be hero in the 31C, it also gives him some real life memories and experiences to sustain him.

Nightie's totally right about Justice League, Jr. though. But it has a Super-Sons vibe about it that appeals to me.

...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

That's who I had in mind (although I also wonder what role young Damien/Robin might play in the future).

Mon-el's only out of the Zone for a year? I missed that, not getting the first issue with his arrival on Earth and thought he was maybe going to be Zone-free from now on, and possibly wind up with the Legion through some quirky time business.

For whatever the reasons they have him in Metropolis, I'm enjoying the series and it's fun for me, watching him make friends and try to fit in but I'd rather have him in space.

I assume the 'year or less' because that's how long I read somewhere, that Superman will be gone from Earth.

That and he's still dying from the lead poisoning and hasn't been given all that long to live by Earth doctors.

He's pretty important to the Legion era, so he can't be out too long or he'll be way over their age limit, as well.
We've seen that he's in Geoff's Legion and he doesn't look 'over the hill'.

Hm, I really am wondering where this Mon-El stint is going to lead... first he's Supes replacement, then even a member of the JLA - what's next? And is there even supposed to be an ending or will they keep him in the 21st century for years?

My personal opinion about his appearances in Superman is not too good. I felt the books were nothing special and quit preordering them when I read about the oh-so-cool crossover with the other Superman books. That was a good moment to quit cause I had to cut down expenses anyway to free ressources for the new Adventure title.

So I'm cured of the anal-retentive notion that I have to own every Mon-El appearance - but if he is meeting some of the Wolfman Titans in JLA, I could be convinced to give that book a a look... though I also feel that the S on his costume is ridiculous... (what's it supposed to mean... "Son-El"? Sonnie Supie? Supes Junior??)

I see it more as a symbolic thing with Mon wearing the shield to honor Supes and his place in the JLA. I doubt there would be some silly name change to go with it. Hopefully.

Wouldn't a spit curl have sufficed? Silly uniform change, silly name change. It's all opinion, what's silly so from that POV, I'm coming to accept that from DC. I just hope they bother to give a reasonable explanation that doesn't make Monel look like a fanboy. Maybe it's an obscure JLA clubhouse rule. I've no doubt that girl is wearing Wonder Woman underoos.

I see it more as Mon being shown as an adopted member of the Superman family. Most of the others, of course, have superhero names beginning with "S". Though technically the symbol is Kryptonian and just coincedentally looks like an earth letter which just happens to correspond with Superman. (yeah, it's a stretch, but I always liked that aspect of the original Superman film and don't mind at all it being carried over into DC canon)

So if you think of the symbol as the El family crest, it works just fine. Hasn't Mon always pretty much been a member of the Superman family (albeit one whose connection hasn't been emphasized as consistently and pointedly as others)?

I can see the Starfire outline, but don't quite see the others. I think the simian outline is Congorilla.

I would not want the JLA to be filled with the Titans. And thinking of having the other Titans in the JLA is making me not too happy that they are having Dick and Donna in together. I can see Dick because he is currently Batman. Also Donna and Aqulad are the only Teen Titans of the original group not to have been in JLA for a bit, so I can kind of see wanting to have Donna in. I just think it would have been better if Dick wasn't in there as Batman.

At least that wouldn't come off fanboy but that family connection has been in place since the first day he met Superman. Why switch now?

Honestly, I don't care for the switch because I don't think it looks good (I don't wear IZOD either smile ) nor do I yet see a real purpose for the switch.

It could be change for change's sake. It could be a marketing ploy, I don't know. I hope they come up with an in-story reason and that it is something other than "honoring" a still living Supes.

That's just too "fanboy" for my tastes and probably also out-of-character for Supes to accept.

Not big on Mon-El's costume change, don't fix what doesn't need to be fixed.

EDIT: Looking at the full picture, I really can't make out any of the silhouettes except for Starfire and Congorilla.

lol

Donna has been in the JLA before, and rather recently, I think. She took over for Dians and became a Wonder Woman for quite awhile.

I get a little confused about the Titans because I don't read their book anymore, but I thought most of the older ones had moved on to other books/groups.

Have they come back or am I just habitually confused?
sigh

Looks cool but I hate the idea. Again how does this impact the Legion. It seems DC thinks "who cares".

Did we learn nothing from the original Crisis? These little fun changes usually have ugly consequences in the end.

Enough legion stuff in the 21st century...give me the 31st century!
