Gotta' say, I really really dislike Portela's faces. This book is supposed to be about a more youthful Legion, but his stiff, render-heavy style with its bordering-on-Infantino-sized jaws doesn't convey youth to me at all. I suppose I'll get used to it, though.

I like the art. We've certainly seen a lot worse. Kind of a weird pose on Jacques and Ayla though. They look like siamese twins.
I see Shadow Lass is back and looking sheepish, as she should. I'm disappointed to see that Harmonia Li is still hanging around. What purpose she serves is beyond me. Ack. Comet Queen in the Legion. What's the world coming to?

I thought the Legionnaires were supposed to get new uniforms.

Who's sitting at the table? Mon? Jo? Someone else?
I LOVE the art! Having just read LSH #16 and Adventure #529 (which were both terrible) I agree with Jim that we've been seeing MUCH worse lately. With Potela here and Woods on Lost it seems like those of you buying these books will be in for some very pretty Legion pictures for a change.
I'm happy to see Thom has finally lost that stupid half hood/mask thing too. Now if only Nura would ditch those ugly gloves. At least her hair colour is better.
Total non-fan of Harmonia Li and Comet Queen here too. And this new Glorith seems more bland than interesting.
The Lost team definitely seems to have the more interesting mix of members.

I feel stupid for asking this, but who is the black-haired fellow with the black-and-red suit sittin down on the left-side of the picture? Is it supposed to be Mon-El?
If the meek shall inherit inherit the Earth, then I at least want Baffin Island - and a property manager to work for me who is made of sterner stuff than I.

Pretty sure that's a "Mon-El" symbol on the back of the guy's chair. Plus he seems to be in the leadership position, monitoring the various "teams".

Yes, I think it's Mon-El. I saw a picture of him somewhere recently in a new costume with a cape that's black on the outside and blue on the inside.

I'm glad to see Comet Queen but feel there are a LOT of characters that deserve to be added before non-entity Glorith and planet-destroying Harmonia Li.
I'm on the verge of thinking this is a borderline insult to those characters.

Ayla and Vi are holding hands? Cool.
Shady still looks like she's mourning Earth-prat. Get the hell over it, warrior-lass!
Comet Queen is standing in an enthusiastic position, Glorith in an insecure one. I like how the artist is trying to establish personality in their body stances.
Star Boy looks sane, but seems to be in a wheelchair. Still tuckered out from his ordeal? Will there be long-term ramifications?
It fits that Cosmic Boy is the apparent 'team leader / spokesman' of his group, and having Element Lad and Dream Girl front and center, speaking for their respective groups also makes sense. With Polar Boy and Sun Boy both having dynamic personalities (and Shady and Comet Queen both being pretty strong willed, as well), having Element Lad, generally a quieter presence, stepping in front of them and taking charge, is interesting, since it suggests that the always-reasonable Jan is the best-suited to handle a team of big egos and larger-than-life personalities.
It also occurs to me that each of Jan's team are suffering (relatively) recent traumas. Shady, the loss of her lover, Comet Queen's near-lobotomization by Saturn Queen, Sun Boy's not-so-long-ago torture and Polar Boy's loss of an arm.
Not in love with what I can see of Mon-El's new look, but it looks fine in the black and white drawing above. If that's the same artist on the black and white linework and the cover above it, the colorist / inker needs to have his peepee slapped, because he's absolutely butchering that picture...
Harmonia Li. Boo. Hiss.

re: The Mon-El images above, The cover (colored) is drawn by Chris Sprouse, the sketch .... I wanna say is drawn by Jim Lee ... but the sketch may not be the final design.

Are Ayla and Vi holding hands or participating in 31st century Standing Arm Wrestling? I appreciate the sentiment, but I've never seen anyone holding hands in those particular positions before- unless one of them is speaking and the other reaches out to offer support, I guess.
The Academy stories in ADVENTURE made me like Comet Queen more than I ever have before, though she's still far from a favorite. I really can't imagine the LSH inducting her with ongoing brain damage issues. Maybe 'deputizing' for a finite mission, but full membership? C'mon!
She does bring a distinct personality and presence... wonder if she'll stay true to her 'crush' on Chuck or move onto someone new residing in the HQ?
Her joining pretty much puts the kabosh on the Lallorian hero I most wanted to see wearing a flight ring. Gas Girl would be redundant, I suppose. I guess Life Lass would be my next Lallorian pick (unless Brainy takes a leave of absence- Ha! Like that would happen...)
I like Set's observations about the loss shared by those in Element Lad's sub-group. If anyone knows about loss, its Jan. It might be interesting to see Vi and Dirk commisserate over his time in captivity, now that the focus for his anger is gone. Just as teammates with something in common that neither would choose for the other, not as a 'couple'.

I'm fine with the art, but it does bother me a bit that the Academy team gets full membership (or at least Glorith and Comet Queen). They just had a graduation where no one got in, so now, just because they're short-handed, they're going to invite members with even less training?
I like the Academy kids, but it seems odd from a logical standpoint. But these are comics, after all.

Levitz doesn't seem to have wanted to make use of Power Boy, Crystal Kid, Lamprey, Nightwind, Shadow Kid or Mandalla, and, while I would prefer some of them to the new gang (who I still wanted to see going through Academy shenanigans for a bit!), I'll at least give him credit for not doing what a dozen other writers would have done, and just killed them all off (either by putting them on a bus and having it explode, or by having an uber-villain like Prime show up and kill a bunch of them to 'clear the field').
I'm not thrilled with Comet Queen, Dragonwing, Glorith or Chemical Kid making the team after a couple of weeks of training, while the Academy students who graduated after years of earning their place were shuttled off, but I'm relieved he didn't just kill them.
Five years from now, a new creative team can pick them up, if they want, and use them, without having to retcon their deaths away.
I like at least half of those characters, and if a writer isn't interested in them, I think I'd prefer he write them out, than write them half-heartedly.

And Set, he hasn't killed them YET.

So is this the full membership? We know Dragonwing, Chemical Kid, Cham, Jo and Tinya remain, but none are here.
Not counting the 7 Lost and the Legionnaires who left before the LSV War, we're also missing Colossal Boy and Quislet.

anyone else notice that Comet Queen has her MMB icon, but Glorith and Harmonia don't yet?
Say, what are Harmonia Li's powers anyway? Cryptic speak, super-bossiness and the ability to release ancient forces which want to destroy the universe?

THINGS I LOVE: Mon-El's new threads Ayla and Vi unambiguously being a couple I don't know what it is, but something about the way this dude draws Jacques is the sex. I have never in any incarnation thought of Jacques Foccart as being remotely attractive until this artist. OH THANK GOD, DYNAMIC AND GOOD ART!!!! It looks like we might actually get some sense of who the full team is pretty early on in the piece. I approve of this. Did we ever get a full roster actually outlined *in the book* up till now? COMET QUEEN!!! HAPPYFACE FOREVER!!!! THINGS I DON'T LOVE SO MUCH: Glorith. Meh. Harmonia Li. Double meh. I don't mind so much if she's kept around as OCCASIONAL support cast/Brainy's foil, but I really hope she's not an actual member of the team. Harmonia Li is definitely no Shvaughn Erin (or Rond Vidar or even that Dr Chaseer woman from a zillion years ago) The good outweighs the bad here though, and quite easily. I am looking forward to seeing Mon be a present leader, and looking forward to the inevitable tension between him and Shady, and crossing my fingers that even if they never get back together, we can just pretend that Shady/Earth-Man never happened and she can go back to NOT being the kind of person who would shag the person who tortured and killed her friends and comrades... I do hope with the addition of the Academy kids that we get some kind of explanation as to why the older graduates or the Subs or the reservists wouldn't get in before them though. While I love Comet Queen, I do agree that it makes no sense for her to be on the team unless they have found a way around her brain damage...and Glorith hasn't shown the slightest sign that she's ready to be a superhero at all, let alone a member of this era's premier superhero team... I must admit, it does seem to me that Power Boy, Gravity Kid, Lamprey, Nightwind and Crystal Kid could make a pretty interesting side team, so I am hoping that Paul isn't shuffling them all off to Limbo as much as he's putting them aside for later use...

For now...no signs of the return of Projectra, Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad, Duplicate Girl, Bouncing Boy, Night Girl, XS or Matter Eater Lad. It's so sad. Too much favorites sacrificed, to put in they place second class characters like Dragonwind, Glorith or Harmonia Li.
From UK with glamour.
