I guess for my part, knowing that the "reimagining" is up next I am just enjoying this arc for what it is. If this were simply 4 issues in an ongoing series, I would hold it to a different standard for continuity.

Or maybe I've become inured against strange shifts in tone immediately prior to Legion reboots *cough*legionontherun*cough*.

Okay, here's the most bizarre notion you'll read on this thread.

WHAT IF the Legion *is* destroyed in the next and final issue of the series. This is to say, it is the ultimate fate of the postboot LSH (plus the Cadets and at least two of the supporting characters) to die in the not-too-distant future as a result of the events depicted in Gail's arc. "Absolute death", to quote Devil. Issue #38 fades out in white. However, thanks to Waid and Johns, this horrible future is averted in next month's special when a hypertime accident casts the slightly younger DnA team into an alternate reality. Think "The Terminator".

I told you it was a bizarre idea. It stinks, too, but I had to say it. I must go now. My brain is melting.

It's bizarre. Weird. Utterly moronic.

And all too frelling plausible... Gail, can you at least honestly deny this?

DRURA!!!!!!

I wouldn't let myself consider it!

When hints were dropped that I would love # 37, I convinced myself it was Tenzil making an overdue appearance... but THIS! THIS was an overdue appearance!

BLESS you Gail Simone, and a hearty warm hug from me and the entire Legion of Drura Fans!

I think it's safe for me to state that FOR NO BETTER REASON has cemented its place as my favorite arc of the entire reboot!

ps/ the rest of the book was pretty good too! laugh

Ah, Lash, at last you've seen the issue! Thought you might think it would be Tenzil, but then there was a lot of hinting at my "Gail's Girls" thread over at Bits.

So many people are happy for YOU about Drura! I guess your admiration for her is *infectious*

I love this story arc, and I love Gail Simone, and I hope she writes the Legion again in the near future.

And with respect to Drura: I always liked her, mostly based on her depiction in v4, but Lash's infectious affection for her had the effect of increasing my own love for the character, and like many people here, I felt that little cheer in my head when she showed up. Favorite moment of the arc so far, out of many wonderful moments.

I'm not sure if Dave Cockrum is still following LEGION, but I'm sure he would get a kick out of knowing Infectious Lass has appeared in the current issue.

I love Infectious Lass...but I wouldn't mind a cool name Virus! But it's all good. As long as the story rocks I really don't mind the old school Lad/Lass. When are the Niño and Niña characters??? wink Stone Niño I guess doesn't have the same ring as Stoney Boy. wink

Gripes:

1. Timber Wolf has not one but 2 HUGE blades piercing his chest, one of which pierces his heart and yet there's no blood and he can still carry on a conversation.

2. Timber Wolf is turning more and more into a Wolverine clone. And YES, I KNOW TW was introduced first BUT NOT THIS Timber Wolf. The original Lone Wolf was just as 2 dimensional, mild-mannered, and milquetoasty as every other male Legionnaire of the silver age. Making him all bestial, complete with claws, heightened senses and healing factor are obvious Wolverine ripoffs. And no, neither the preboot, nor post-boot TW spent any time in the wild.

3. The Jo and Tinya scene obviously implies that Winema is dead, which we all know is not true, so why mislead us with this overly dramatic scene?

4. The sky is falling (so to speak), her mother is dying, and Tinya, who's supposedly taking charge of the rescue mission has nothing to do but play dolls with a bunch of kids? Does she carry that Kid Q doll in the pouch of her cape or what? And Trudy finds time to write in her diary?

5. Why didn't Ultra Boy, who has super speed, carry Winema to some other hospital outside of Metropolis, where high-tech facilities are still functioning?

6. The whole, "Oh, I noticed a tiny little piece of fabric missing from your skimpy little costume, so I thought you might be injured" scene was ludicrous.

7. Come on, Dreamer WAKE UP ALREADY!

8. The last 2 covers have been very misleading. Arrow and K Kid did not lay eyes on each other at all last issue, and Canary did not use her powers, nor interact with Brainy or Umbra at all in this issue.

9. Karate Kid fighting off the entire population of Oasis because he's now mentally prepared was a joke imo. I don't care how skilled he is, he doesn't have super strength and he's not invulnerable. He would cave in due to sheer exhaustion before single-handedly defeating so many attackers.

10. Why are M'Onel and Superboy, the 2 most powerful Legionnaires, hanging out in space IN CASE the war spills off planet while the rest of the team faces death actually fighting the war? This reminds me of the old story where Wildfire sends Supes and Mon off on what may be a wild goose chase because he wants to keep Dawnstar's power in reserve!

11. The drama of marking out Legion emblems is SO cliched. Not to mention the fact that Violet is now up and around and doing fine, so I hope Devil's marker is erasable.

12. The art is not up to Dan Jurgens' usual standards imo either.

Pluses:

1. Invisible Kid is actually shown using a weapon in the midst of battle! All the weaker Legionnaires should be issued sidearms imo. It's ridiculous to send them into a war zone and expect them to fight hand to hand.

2. Infectious Lass returns! Yay!

3. Nightwind returns! Yay!

4. hmm. Can't think of much else. Sorry, Gail, but I was disappointed.

Wow, guys!

Jim and Sanity, sorry you didn't like it, it's over soon. Hopefully you'll like what Waid's up to much better!

To everyone else, DC has been surprised and delighted by the response we've gotten, which has been way in excess of expectations and overwhelmingly positive. Very exciting!

I do have some thoughts to share, but some I want to wait til after the story is over. My goal was to have a big entertaining story that would appeal to both pre-boot and post-boot readers, so the time delay between DnA's last story and this one brings the two universes a little closer, intentionally. Some of what has been labelled a mistake is simply new information to help show some time has passed, hence the costume changes and such.

Regarding Timber Wolf, I completely disagree that he was completely emasculated pre-boot. Wolverine's a great character...but yeah, Timber Wolf was first, and the fact that people forget that has always bugged me (not Legion fans, of course), so maybe I winked a little too hard at the Legion true believers there, but you guys know what I'm talking about, regarding who the ORIGINAL is. wink

Have to run, but I'll be back later to add my useless two bits to all of your comments (or as many as I can before an editor yells at me!) as soon as I can.

You guys have been wonderful and we've been overwhelmed by the response from both new and long-time Legionnaires. Thank you SO MUCH for all the support!

Best,

Gail

I enjoyed this issue, I'll post more detailed thoughts later but aside from a few distractions it fitted in with the other two very well.

Well done Gail, Dan, everyone else.

Bxx

YES, Timber Wolf was introduced first, but that Timber Wolf did not have claws, heightened senses, or a healing factor, and he didn't behave in a bestial manner. It is those Wolverine-esque attributes that many of us fans object to. There is no dispute over who came first, it's the grafting of Wolverine's abilities and character traits onto Timber Wolf in order to make him DC's version of the popular Marvel character that is in dispute, not who saw print first.

I made a posting over at Nightscrawlers to bring it to Dave's attention if he isn't already aware. I also subtly mentioned we hope to see him here again when he feels up to it. It sounds like he's back at the drawing board working to restart the Futurians these days which is great news.

Well, granted Dave Cockrum made Brin somewhat more bestial before he created Wolverine, but his schtick was traditionally "super-acrobatics", plus being just a notch below the Kryptonians and Daxamites on the strength/endurance scale. Cockrum's making him slightly more feral in appearance was built upon during the v4 Legion, during the whole "Furball" phase and after.

Great to see Lyle with a gun - very 007. Triad should have been issued something similar - that tri-jitsu doesn't seem to be doing much against all those chomping insects. Where's Monsanto Master when you need him?

I liked Chuck's uneasy shouldering of the burden of leadership - quite different from what we've seen of Kid Q, so sure of herself and the Legion's abilities. Chuck is so human!

At this point, Jo wouldn't know if Winema had lived or died - but he certainly has bad news for Tinya, given the state of the medical facilities - so it makes sense that she would be upset, maybe assume the worst.

Maybe it's unrealistic, even for a comic book, but Karate Kid taking on everybody - and winning - was wonderful.

Devil and Canary have got to be the loopiest pair of villains yet. As with the KK scene, this story is just bordering on funny, don't know if that was intentional, but it works, it's just this side of outrageous. Making tea in the middle of everything? Well, why not?

Is Canary as dumb and in thrall as she acts? She seemed to be searching for an excuse when she pointed out Devil's torn costume - as if she expected Devil to be hurt for some other reason.

Cham using his head to set a trap! And Drura looked fantastic with those big eyes. Interesting that she just made them ill without waving her hands, or pointing, without the usual visual indication powers. She just thinks disease and transmits it?

How does Devil intend to get to Legion World with everything techy on the fritz? We don't really know what her powers are yet, do we?

Anxious to see how it wraps up. Maybe Devil and her crew will wind up stalling the evolving insects, and they'll all live unhappily ever after.

I surely wouldn't complain if we could continue with bi-weekly stories like this.

Well, again, there's a difference between, "That's wrong," and "that's an element/situation we haven't seen before." Any writer who writes the book is going to show things that fill out aspects of a character--it's just how it goes. I think we were very very respectful to the Legion legacy, but there are still bits that are a little bit shiny, just as EVERY bit was new at one point.

But it's fine, everyone's got the right to disagree. Certainly the intent was to serve the story.

Like I said, response so far has been very big and very positive. I'm sorry if someone feels left out, that's certainly not the intent. If I had the book for a longer time, I certainly would like to see certain gaps filled. Maybe Waid's working on that. wink

Best,

Gail
