(Hopefully there isn't already a thread for this 'cause I couldn't find one.)

So apparently there's a Legion story in this one.

I've been burned on these Holiday Specials in the past so I need a nice Legion Worlder who's bought this one to tell me if it's worth it or not.

Post a review in here when you can please. smile

This comes out on Wednesday.
I've put my order in for my two copies. We haven't seen the Legion in one of these for quite a few years so I'm hoping for a collectability value this time around.

I hope the Legion story isn't too cheesy (something tells me it won't be though).

It's 8 pages, and not a bad disposable story, though the ending is pretty hokey. DnA get all the characters right and it's got a pretty big cross section of the team for the space allotted (Though Tinya isn't in it except in a group shot, if you're looking for her due to the cover). Probably not worth the price of admission on it's own.

Haven't read the other stories yet, but the other features are Anthro, Johah Hex, John Stewart, Superman and Spectre.

I haven't fully read it, but Gates was in it.

And the Legion HAS celebrated Christmas and Chanukah.

Was Holiday just something the UP came up with recently?

Thanks Dave! I'm always up for more Anthro and John Stewart stories so I think I will get this after all.

Not a bad little story featuring the Legion. I too agree that DnA did a good job in the few pages they were given to work with.

The art was good as well. Too bad the story couldn't have been a bit longer. Oh well, there's always next year right?

The other characters showcased in this special were ok, but obviously not the main reason I picked up this little collector issue. smile

I liked the LSH holiday story- though I wish they'd mentioned Klordny.

It's hard to imagine such a political gesture really working, though. Wouldn't individual cultures *still* celebrate whatever holiday Holiday was meant to represent? Oh, well- maybe it's just an extra day off for some cultures- or their only one if they didn't celebrate holidays the way we do.

I liked the way the word 'holiday' was used in relation to the computer program (or whatever). That was kind of a neat little premise.

Loved seeing that group with Element Lad- I wouldn't mind seeing a more long-term mission with just those characters.

A big welcome back to DNA and Chris Batista! I hope there's more LSH-related work in all their futures!

To be honest I thought the Anthro story was the best. The art was wonderful.

Hm, the Ayla butt-shot could have influenced my decision in buying it!

I passed--I remember as a kid thinking all these holiday specials were usually pretty sucktacular. Now that I'm adult I realized I was quite right!

Hey - I bought this issue and am really glad I did. Definitely the best of the DCU Holiday/Halloween specials I've read. Only one terrible story in here (the Superman one), a trio of pretty good ones (Jonah Hex, Spectre, Green Lantern), one really good one (Anthro) and one *great* one (the Legion).

What a fab little tale DnA put together here. This is probably one of the best 8-page stories I've seen from DC in a long time (and that includes ALL the back-ups they've been running over the last couple of years).

Great use of characters. And very well plotted. Seriously, DnA gave more Legionnaires something to do in only 8 pages than other writers have managed over 8 issues! I really liked the way it tied together with the 'Holiday' theme too, especially with everything to do with the SP Control.

And lastly, fantastic art by Batista. I really miss his work on this team. And his run wasn't long enough for me back then either. Would love to see you do this team again one day Chris!

There were a few weird errors that an editor really should have picked up though (but I didn't let them spoil my enjoyment of the story). Here were a few I noticed -

* Reep lost the "Boy" from his name. This isn't the reboot anymore DnA. wink
* Element Lad was in his 80s pink/black costume. (No complaints from me on that one though 'cause I vastly prefer it to his boring current outfit.)
* Polar Boy still has his ice-arm (though maybe this story took place before he got it fixed).
* They forgot to give Mon-el a caption at the end
* And that group at the end was certainly not "every reserve and off-duty member". Heck it wasn't even every regular member! Where was Salu? Nura? Yera? Lydda? Jenni? Troy? Tellus? Quislet? ... and so on. Maybe they were all waiting to be ported across on Gates' next load.

Still those above complaints were all completely minor in comparison to how much I enjoyed this story. Great addition to the retroboot canon.

The amount of the Legion content was disappointing in and of itself. The tale that they chose to tell in a 'holiday' issue more so. And the continued contradiction of past continuity continues to irk me. Members have been shown to celebrate a number of traditional Earth holidays and holidays from other cultures as well... can anyone (well, aside from Mystery Lad) say "Klordny" ?!?

^ The Legion got 8 pages - same as all the rest. You wanted all the stories to be longer? Or the Legion to get more prominence than the other characters?

I would obviously have liked this story to have been longer (I'll take all the retro-boot pages I can get) but I'm cool with them getting equal page time to Superman, Green Lantern, et al here.

And like I said above, DnA did a good job of giving 9 different Legionnaires something to do in those 8 pages (plus a cameo from a bunch more at the end) so I was more satisfied by these 8 pages than I have been by some whole issues in the past.

The continuity-nut in me would have liked to see some reference to Klordny but to be honest, I've always hated that hokey-stupid name so I'm not too bothered if it's been quietly forgotten.

Either/Or would be good, however, not being a fan of Anthro, Spectre, Green Lantern or Hex and pretty much wanting Superman killed off permannetly, the latter would be better. Also a story that actually had something to do with the holiday season in some meaningful way and not a play on the word 'holiday' would have been nice too. Oddly enough, the way the individual characters were presented was better than the story on the whole.... the whole did not equal the sum of it's parts.

Reading this issue was the most fun I've had all month. Granted, I haven't had a very fun month. I've loved DC Christmas and holiday stories and special since I was a kid. Honestly they should do an archive or classy hardcover collection of some of these stories.

Each story in this year's special was simple and sweet. The art was solid throughout the issue. It was a treat to see DnA, and Bastista's takes on the the current version of the Legion.

I re-read the Legion story again last night and it truly is a cute little story.
What I especially liked was how the "Holiday" was just referred to as a vague holiday so as not to offend any religion/worship group.
Well done.

What you see as well done, I unfortunately see as trite, nonsensical and boring. I hated the GL story for instence, but it was much more interesting and made me at least think about it. The LSH story was boring, contradicts past LSH continuity and is completely forgetable. Even the awful holiday fanfic I wrote years ago is better than this story was.

I did. It is somewhere in the "Bits o' Legionnaire Busines" forum. 3 or 4 or 5 pages down.... Hold on, I'll try to link it.
Ok, This is the thread. You might want to read the first paragraph of the first post to establish how my continuity works then skip down to the post that begins:

I read it last night and quite enjoyed the LSH tale, although it ONLY works for me if "Holiday" is a planetwide day set aside IN ADDITION TO individual cultures and religions' holidays. SO I am assuming that IS the case. I thought the computer getting a 1-sceond holiday every year thing was very cute and I was happy for it. smile

I also really enjoyed the Anthro and Jonah Hex tales. The Superman short was kind-of sweet, the Green Lantern story was fine, but I skipped the Spectre story. They never have done a lot for me.
