Okay, so I had to freeze-frame Calamity King's appearance to bask in it for a few minutes... am now beating down the urge to begin an "all-Calamity King's nelly tiara insignia and thigh-high boots" thread! He's so HEP, so ROCK STAR... LOVE him!

Every team needs one!

And what's all this about no femmes being featured in this episode?
Nemesis Kid,with that pronounced lisp of his, couldn't have been any MORE femme!

I SOOOO enjoyed this episode! Everything worked, from the introduction of Karate Kid to Nemesis Kid not being a traitor (yet?); from Grimbor as a badass villain to Chameleon Boy (or Cham, as he now seems to be officially called) trying to prove himself; from Cos being the hard liner to the reinterpretation of KK's tryout match with Superman. Cartoon perfection.

It's easy to find fault with the lack of girls in this episode, but I'm hoping this is an isolated instance. In fact, very few Legionnaires were present -- even Timber Wolf had a few lines but little to do -- as the focus was on Cham and KK and, to a lesser extent, NK. To populate the story with more characters, even girls, just for the sake of having them present would have weighed the story down.

Karate Kid fills a necessary role here, as he always has: He's the hero who worked hard to get where he was and whose determination won out over prejudice (over his lack of super-powers, natch; but it's telling that he has always been at least part Asian). The other Legionnaires are the elite, the cool kids, and the jocks who can't understand what it's like to be "normal". KK is around to show them the blindspot in their thinking. But he's not perfect; in the cartoon, he briefly gives in to cynicism when he learns he's being sent home. But, in tried and true TV fashion, he's also the one who spots the clue about the trap the Legionnaires have fallen into. Naturally, he's also the one who saves the day.

Cham, too, is fun to watch. There was even a brief moment when I saw a hint of his preboot personality. When he said he was going to get a reputation for disobeying orders, he echoed the Cham who secretly helped Ultra Boy when the latter was accused of murder, and who infiltrated Starfinger's organization by himself without even telling his teammates. I can see that mature version of Cham as a possible outcome for this very young seed.

Nemesis Kid was the real surprise. Like everyone else, I was astonished when he didn't reveal his true colors when Grimmy said that he was the inspiration for his power-neutralizing doohickey. Even more astonishing, NK extends an apology toward Karate Kid -- a gesture that seems beyond Cosmic Boy. I don't believe for a moment that NK is truly a good guy, but his eventual betrayal is going to make one hell of a story.

Cartoon perfection doesn't come along very often in comic book adaptations. But when it does come, it's a beautiful thing!

Speaking of rock star, was it me, or did EDE have a very Elvis-like twang to his voice?

A lot of this episode really made sense, from a story-telling point of view. Superman's idea to look for recruits on K-19 is smart. His ready acceptance of Karate Kid also makes sense--presumably this Supes is familiar with the likes of Batman and Green Arrow in his home time period, so he knows what KK is capable of. The setup for the climax made total sense -- ONLY someone without powers could defeat Grimbor. Even if we never see KK again in the cartoon, we know the essentials about his personal story from this episode. Very taut, concentrated storytelling.

It's also not unexpected that the other Legionnaires would be dismissive about a non-powered member. They're jerks here, but, they have a long history of jerkitude in the comics. Nemesis Kid may not yet be revealed as a villain, but he sure is creepy. Cos should watch his back. Finally, Tucker and company show that there are no bad villains, just bad creative teams. Portrayed this way, Grimbor is a perfect foil for a super-team--he focuses on neutralizing his individual opponents. He sort of reminds me of Deathstroke in that respect. Great job rehabilitating a character whose sole purpose seemed to be bondage innuendo when he was created 30+ years ago.
But doesn't the leather mask lend even more to the bondage innuendo?

Wait... so Nemesis Kid is now a Legionaire... who wonders how long he'll last before he betrays the Legion?

Nah, Its just that If they want to be some what true to the comic then its gonna happen. Plus a death hear and there means that people may take the show a little more seriously. Just please don't kill Kell. I know that most people here hate him , but I don't.

I just watched this and loved it.

KK was a bit too puny though. I love how the cartoon writers user Legion material and craft these cartoons. Maybe one of them should write the Legion!

Great and exciting episode. Loved the dialogue and action!

Nah. I don't hate him. I actually hope at the end of this season we see Kell-X get sent back to a brighter happier future.
