The Subs were wonderfully effective 5 years later, though. Was Giffen still involved at all in that, or was it just the Bierbaums?

Giffen was the plotter of the Terra Mosaic storyline, which is where the subs became an effective commando unit under the leadership of Jacques Foccart and Troy Stewart (IK II and Tyroc). The Bierbaums handled the actual dialog, but that whole run was basically Giffen's (including the decisions to blow up first the Moon, then Earth itself, which is where the series jumped the shark and pretty much made the zeroboot inevitable).

First comic books ever bought: A DC four-for-47-cents grab bag that included Adventure #331. The rest is history.

Thanks for the info, Hermit! I didn't have time to check my back issues then.

Yeah, it did pretty much go downhill from there. The actual destruction of Earth was handled beautifully, though.

To be honest, I also lost a smidgen of respect for most of the Legionnaires during the early runs. I kept thinking, why is Jacques pretty much the only active Legionnaire as of the end of the Levitz run who is still fighting the Dominators?

Of course, the reasons are very complex (Polar Boy imprisoned, Cos and Vi fighting a war, various Legionnaires needed elsewhere), but as a kid at the time I was a little sad to see the once proud Legion disbanded and scattered, instead of actively resisting.
