LEGION LOST #1Written by FABIAN NICIEZA Art and cover by PETE WOODS On sale SEPTEMBER 14 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T Seven heroes from the 31st century have traveled back to the present day. Their mission: Save their future from annihilation. But when the future tech they brought with them fails, they find themselves trapped in a nightmarish world that, for them, is the ultimate struggle to survive! Don’t miss the start of this all-new LEGION series illustrated by Pete Woods – fresh off his spectacular run on ACTION COMICS – who is joined by writer Fabian Nicieza (RED ROBIN)! LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #1Written by PAUL LEVITZ Art by FRANCIS PORTELA Cover by KARL KERSCHL On sale SEPTEMBER 21 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T The Legion of Super-Heroes has been decimated by the worst disaster in its history. Now, the students of the Legion Academy must rise to the challenge of helping the team rebuild – but a threat of almost unstoppable power is rising at the edge of Dominator space, and if the new recruits fail, the Legion Espionage Squad may be the first casualties in a war that could split worlds in half! http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2011/06/08/the-next-generation-of-justice/ "Legion Lost" has a group stranded in the present (written by Nicieza), and LSH #1 continues the Levitz series, with new members joining (Academy!). Colour me surprised.

Wow, Legion Lost looks great! Fabian writing, and Pete Woods on art! Woods was excellent on the Superman comics for so long, being the one great thing about an era of mediocracy!
And Levitz continuing his run on Legion is great news! I'd hoped it would continue un-altered and can breath a sigh of relief.

I love, love, love the cast of Legion Lost. If Quislet were there, it would be pretty much all of my favourites (plus T-Wolf). I hope Fabien does them well.
Looks like Dragonwing, at least, graduates the Academy. Interesting way to get the Academy members on the team: create a seven member hole!

Wow!
Love that Wildfire costume. The black background really makes the red and yellow bits pop out! I like how sleek it is, too. Unlike, say, Iron Man's suit, Wildfire's suit doesn't really have to have room for a muscular dude in there, so it can be all 'unrealistically thin.'
Dawnstar's wearing pants! Woo-hoo!
Yera's back in action, which is interesting.
Tyroc, Tellus, Gates and Timber Wolf, to round them out. Interesting team, particularly for a modern day team, since some of them are pretty hard to disguise as regular folks. (And, amusingly, *Tellus*, as a veteran of a 21st century mission, will be the 'team expert' on 21st century matters!)
The LSH cover has what looks like a funky bunch of sideways DNA strands moving around the background. I wonder if that's a plot point, or some sort of sideways infinity symbols or what.
Dragonwing is probably the last cadet I expected to see graduating to the Legion. Wow. Hope she isn't fodder...
Not in love with Cham's gun-hand. Dude has enough awesome superpowers without being able to make energy blasters out of his arm. Still, maybe it's just a pretend blaster and he's psyching someone out!

The Lost team is really the misfits/losers/dirty dozen, isn't it? Probably designed for maximal fish out of waterness in the 21C. Fine by me! And may I give all praise and thanks to the gods of the DCNu that Dawnstar is out of that Gary Frank abomination of costume and into something that space rawks!
...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

The most surprising thing (since we already kind of knew there'd be two Legion comics) is the lack of Superman-related characters in the titles.

on the art side, we are in good good hands. when woods is allowed to draw with no rush, he's an awesome artist. and so is portela, whose work i enjoyed very much on the legion so far.
still... niceza is on my opinion an average writer at best. and levitz still on the legion after the IMHO terrible volume six feels like a CURSE: will we ever get rid of this guy?
happy to see DC believes in the legion enough to give them two titles, though. but i'm afraid with those writers it won't last very long...

I just posted something very briefly about this on facebook, so I am glad there's already a thread here so I can go into more detail lol... I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS ALREADY. I don't know if I am just a sap for good marketing, but I was all prepared to hate whatever the reboot was gonna bring to Legion, and it happily now looks like I don't have to - I do think that while Levitz's Academy work has been brilliant fun, his LSH work has needed some revitalisation. Hopefully this will be it. Dragonwing (and hopefully more Academy students ~Chemical Kid and Comet Queen hint hint~) joining the Legion can only be a good thing long term as long as they are not treated like cannon fodder, and to the best of my knowledge Paul has never treated a character like cannon fodder so I have high hopes. Legion Lost looks AMAZING. New costumes excite me GREATLY. I really really hate most of the Gary Frank ones. If anybody can utilise characters like Dawny, Tellus, Yera and Gates to their full potential power-wise, I am confident it's Fabian. He has always been good at that kind of thing. If he can reign in his tendency to make things TOO convoluted at times, I think this has the potential to be a run equal to DnA's. So basically I have gone from being quite MEH to being quite OMG I CAN'T WAIT. Good work, DC. Please follow through.

Is that Yera? She strikes me more as Black Witch with a spell that did something to her hands.
Either way, I think it's a fascinating team, though I wish they were lost somewhere more interesting than the present day. If it is Black Witch (and I'd certainly prefer her), it'll be interesting to see what happens to her separated from Blok. And I would love to see how she interacts with the modern mages.
These will definitely be one of the few books I'll be getting that month.
So, next question is, what's the Batista miniseries he was talking about? I would think "Legion Lost" would be a miniseries since they can't stay here forever. So "LL" is the one he turned down.

raz, good mention one of Fabian's strongest characteristics and one of his worst.
He writes super-powers better than most other writers out there, and does a great job at showing characters doing things. Paul does this very well too IMO, but with just 7 (and likely one or two more) characters, Fabian should be able to really show this off nicely.
His big flaw, however, is making things too convoluted. Hopefully he can be reigned in here (or maybe just embrace the convolusion already in place).

The Titans cover includes a 'Kid Flash', if this is Wally West, then it looks like Bart Allen and Jenni Ognats could have been written out of the DCU. Is that why XS has hardly been seen in V6/Adventure? It makes sense to not have Barry's grandchildren around if he is supposed to be young and cool but from a diversity point of view a blond haired caucasion superhero with a black/brown granddaughter is a great statement.
And "sob" it looks like Adventure has been cancelled again.
"Our devotion to each other was unexplainable" "You were kids" "No Batman, we were Legion"

I am *very* glad to see WILDFIRE getting more regular exposure as part of the Lost team! This design is also a vast improvement over the previous "naked" looks he was given. I wonder what they'll do if his containment suit gets damaged...
I'm looking forward to the team interacting with the rest of the DCU - it's the best part of being in the present day! I also have to wonder in this retooling, if Gates will still remember his previous Legion team or if there will be a retcon where he was always with them. I don't even want to get into the possible ties this Legion will have with the "DCnU" Superman.
I like the update to Tellus' headgear so that it's not just a fishbowl. I hope that they'll finally get around to giving Tellus the light-up effects on his back the way Lightle originally envisioned now that technology makes it possible.

It could be that Legion Lost will morph into Dan DiDio's long wanted Superman & the Legion title.

I really don't like the idea of having (again) a team of Legion heroes in the present. In fact, I hate it - it's just a boring cheap and obvious premise. Send them to 81st Century for all I care. Would have loved to see a L.E.G.I.O.N. revamp or something like that.
No news - as I could have imagined - on the main book, because there is not more one can do when we talk about Legion of Super-Heroes. I was almost counting on a co-plotting gig with Giffen, alas no.
And, really, Fabian Nicieza as writer? Why not give it to Chris Roberson, someone fresher, more into what's going on? DC seems to have decided that creators are useless and thus focused on editorially chosen franchises. Except for some of those strong "magical" titles with Lemire, Cornell and Snyder, it's been a terrible relaunch in terms of freshness and creativity.

The thing I always liked about the Legion was that it had its own distinct character apart from the rest of DC's 'verse. Honestly, I don't get how the stated desire of DC to de-complicate their books meshes with the continual move to yoke each and every one of them together. Really, it's exasperating. How long before this new, improved, "streamlined" universe is having its first big epic multi-titled crossover event in which a character sneezes over in Green Arrow and Tellus gets the flu in the Legion book? But the art looks pretty nice, at least. Let's just hope their time in the present day is short.

Paul Levitz is synonymous with the Legion of Superheroes, but DC's published many different iterations of the Legion. Can you give us some hints about what Paul has planned?
Dan Didio: The good news on this is that we've had a lot of positive reactions to what's going on with Paul on Legion of Superheroes, and he's got a very distinctive style that is really something that plays to long-time Legion fans. I'm happy to say we're going to be continuing with a lot of the direction and tone he's set currently on the run. That's probably one of the books you'll see the least amount of change taking place, other than the subtraction of the characters in Legion Lost

So I don't get tagged as a hater, I'll add that if Levitz brings the same attitude to this book that he brought to the Academy stories in Adventure, it'll likely be well worth reading.
(But Crossover-Mania has annoyed the [bleep] out of me for years, and it likely always will.)
