My dad, and all of his brothers, had black hair and fairly light skin (although they browned nicely in the sun.)
He's a Scotish, Irish Crosby ~ a 'the Bruce' clan, many of whom came over from France with William.
The Irish are known for their blue eyes and black hair, it's rather a classic combo for them. And part of Ireland is still British, isn't it?
Mel Gibson and Hugh Jackman are from an old Commonwealth country, Australia, aren't they? I know that Jackman has played a number of English type Lords.
Anyway, just something to throw into the discussion.
A singin' and a dancin' along the way.

I've always found it interesting how many black haired caucasion characters there are in American comics. Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson for example as well as Clark Kent. I've always put this down to the high level of Jewish creators rather than a indication of the prevalence of black hair in American society. Outside of the Italian, Spanish and Greek communities (that none of the characters ever came from) I've never detected a large black haired fair skinned population in the US. . [ponders] I'm of Eastern Euro Stock, and Jewish. My Mom, in her prime, had black hair. But several of the relatives on that side of the family were redheads, FWIW. My sibs and I all have brown hair, though mine is a bit darker than that of my sibs, you still wouldn't mistake it for black. I think many of those characters ended up with black hair because it's a dramatic look for a medium that prized visual simplicity. It was meant to instantly connote a strong personality, in a way that other hues would not. In that way, it's related to the fact that so many heroic costumes of that era were in primary colors, as well. It was meant to make them stand out.

I'm not sure whether non-Mon-el SUPERMAN stories should be discussed here or in DR. GYM'LL's... but I'm going to bring up ACTION 876, if only to state that if the Superboy paired up with whatever LSH sees publication after LOTW, I wouldn't mind if it was Christopher Kent. As of this issue.
I think he comes into his own here. I barely paid attention to him before, but his battles here- both with the issue's villain (and what a villainess she is-- this witch won't be redeemed anytime soon, for which I type 'hurrah'!) and with his own impulses make for the beginnings of what could be an effective super-hero.
NIGHTWING AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES... not bad. I imagine he'd revert to SUPERBOY, though. And then, Richard Grayson could get his name back.
Of course, Lar Gand could be earning the right to the SUPERBOY name this summer, too. Not to mention characters returning from the dead.
Flamebird doesn't fare so well. Her actions didn't really make sense to me, but I'm pretty unfamiliar with her.

eh, I still don't really like the "idea" of Chris Kent, I thought he worked fine as a plot device but not a recurring character. But since I'm not reading Action I'm obviously missing the development of the character.
That said, if they are restoring the "original" Legion than I don't want another Superboy (Kon, Prime, or Chris) shoe horned into the group, they don't have a history with the team so why would they hang with the Legionnaires, that would just be akward.

I despised Chris at first but he's grown on me and they've managed to make him into a compelling character IMHO. He definitely qualifies as a horribly abused child of sorts that came out of a horrible situation as a very good human being instead of a thorougly twisted individual passing on his abuse to others as it would be impossible for just about anyone not to be raised with those parents and in that monstrous environment. Still, there is a real world precedent for such individuals and at least one other in the DC Uni, Mr. Miracle, although his story hasn't been a compelling one compared to Chris Kent's. The way they've handled him makes him come off as very heroic.
Works for me...I find him a very sympathetic character.
Whatever they do...he needs to keep the headband and that sort of classic Kryptonian Silver Age Jor-Elish look IMO. It works given the current visuals of the other characters in the Superman Family and it's alwauys been a cool look IMO. Headbands are even in style now...again. Lose the bowlcut hair he's had for most of his existence.
And I for one sincerely hope they do not decide to make Mon-El Superboy...I will revolt if they attempt that as it is a huge insult to Mon-El, not only because he's always been just a tad to mature for the boy part of the name but IMO also because it makes him into more of a Superboy clone. Mon-El is the much cooler name anyway IMO.

He appeared in the Geoff Johns/Richard Donner arc "Last Son" (this was after Infinite Crisis, so a few years ago). He is General Zod's and Ursa's child who was born in the Phantom Zone. He got out and Clark and Lois adopted him and named him Chris. He had to go back into the zone at the end of that arc. Now he was revealed to be the Nightwing running around Action Comics.
Hope that helps abit.

But there is actually a large portion of black haired fair skin part of the population represented in the movies.
Look at the movies coming out when these characters were created, you have Clark Gable, bunch of other guys, but many of them were black haired or dark enough brown that it appeared black on the movie screen. Could that factor in to why so many black haired characters exist (plus ease of coloring) because that was the "ideal" look for men.
Dunno, but it's hard to tell now what the black haired/light haired mix should be because so many people have mixed ethnic backgrounds (I'm Slavic on my dad's side and pretty pure British Isle stock on my mom's). I think this has to more to do with black haired heroes than jewish creators personally. In a recent Comic Book Urband Legends thing at CBR they revealed that our favorite heroes were indeed named and modeled after movie stars. Clark Kent got his name from Clark Gable, etc.

For anyone who isn't reading Superman at the moment, I think Robinson is doing some nice characterisation on Mon-El and the Tellus sub-plot is starting to pick up pace.
Worth jumping on to IMHO.

I'd have to agree as well. Late to the party, but I picked up the last two issues and was surprised at how much I enjoyed this story and its various subplots. A new take on Mon-el: adapting to a new culture, powers totally shorting out, definitely not the older, wiser hero who emerges from the Zone to the adoration of the legionnaires.

#688-- Dr. Light appears and gets to the root of Mon-el's power fluctation. It's not good news. (Well, to LSH fans it sort of *is*, in a gloomy sort of way.)
Y'know, I never thought of it, but characters like Superman and Mon-el who receive their powers from the sun should naturally be drawn to light-powered folk, like Dr. Light. At the least, their numbers oughta be on speed dial, just for recharging purposes. So it's also fascinating that Mon-el eventually chooses a darkness-powered heroine as his mate. Hmmmm.
I liked the instant bond that seems there between the Mitch the cafe guy and J. Kent. Looks like Jon'll make a friend or two on his own during his stay in Metropolis. Some readers have picked up on a gay vibe in this scene. I get that Mitch could well be, but Mon? Nah.

Assuming it was Brainy that sent back the anti-lead serum for Mon-El, it seems a bit cynical for him to deliberately reduce its potency - presumably to ensure recorded history happens but even so it is a bummer for poor Lar who believes he is a goner in 12-18 months. Hmmm imagine the conversation just post Lo3W: "Hi Brainy, what are you doing" "Oh just sending back a anti-lead serum for you when you temporarily came out of the Phantom Zone in 2009" "But that serum didn't work properly?" "Yes but if it had, you wouldn't be here now" SMACK!

Honestly I'm not feeling this as much, it just seems to be moving at a glacial pace and for three bucks a pop I prefer a little bit more movement in my funny books. The Mon character points are very nice, but it just seems that you shouldn't need 22 pages over multiple issues to just show us a deeper side to the character.
I was planning on dropping this for the crossover anyways as I'm only getting it for Mon and don't care about the rest, so we'll see if I pick it up afterward.
And honestly I found Mitch annoying, not the type of character I would hang with, but maybe he's supposed to be Mon's Jimmy Olsen?

Yeah, I thought Mitch was pretty gay, too, but I'm glad rhino wrote it first. Not all gourmet cafe owners are gay, of course. Not that there's anything WRONG with gay gourmet cafe owners, of course. Anyway, as written and drawn, Mitch was really throwing himself at Mon-El. I expected him to throw his arms around Mon's neck and plant a big wet one right on ol' Daxam lips.
...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

The last three issues could have been done in 2 easily (maybe less) and still had the same impact. Really hope this picks up soon.
