This was a fun-- if crowded issue. Invisible Kid, Brainy, Karate Kid and Batman had some fun moments, in particular. (Though Lyle was a bit over the top-- maybe he has a Bruce shrine set up somewhere, in addition to the Supergirl one. Could be he's more complex than I'd thought.)
There was a Dream Girl bit that was cruel to this fan. Maybe it'll resolve differenly than it seems at issue's end.
Brainy was even more curmudgeonly than normal (and that's saying alot for *this* version).
It was a treat to see Batman flying over a 31st century Metropolis while wearing a flight ring. That alone was worth the price of the issue.
The LSH'll be around next issue, as well- which is a good thing, because the Kara/Adam Strange/Green Lantern ongoing plot took up quite a bit of space that a team the size of the Legion could've used.
How this fits in with the ever-perplexing LIGHTNING SAGA/COUNTDOWN/AMAZONS ATTACK DCU merry-go-round is a mystery.

I agree on all counts, Mystery Lad. We've now seen both versions of Karate Kid tangle with Batman. I liked this one being a mid-air fight.
It was nice to see Tinya get some panel time in the last few pages. She has been one of the more neglected members in the 3boot.

This series has been quite amusing.
Batman getting the jump on the Trips was cute too. Nura's brief appearance was a bit sad.
I wonder if the two teams of heroes will be fighting the Luck Lords 1000 years apart or if they'll all join up next issue..

Well Bats took the Legion on to easily. But it was a good story. Love this series! It's FUN! And yeah I usually don't like fun.

What I find odd, however, is that as the B&B story takes place BEFORE the Lightning Saga (as it is explained in a little text bocx in the issue), Batman doesn't mention another Legion in the JLA/JSA crossover... I mean, in the JSA/JLA crossover, it's the second time he fights a character called Karate Kid from a group called the Legion of Super-heroes, and he doesn't even mention that in passing to the others?
It means that both Batman and Superman know the Legion of super-heroes at the beginning of the Lightning saga, but that they both know a different one... that's definitely matter to talk about... In the "you can't be the Legion I met them" kind a way.
Unless of course, Batman's memory of the event is erased at the end of the B&B story.

Wasn't that the thing about the pre-crisis B&B series? Quite a few of the team-ups could not possibly fit into continuity? The story also seems to happen after the disappearance of Cos 1000 years from now. It might actually be after Bedard's current issues.
After the complaining about the cover which was decidedly the weakest of George's efforts so far the art in the issue itself was a treat. I think the choice of inker is not quite right for GP's work.
That said this thing has been really fun, so it doesn't really matter.

True, and Supergirl is conspiciously absent from the roster.
One thing though, the Legion eppears even more irritating in their behaviour than in the regular title. Brainiac 5 is suck a pr**k

I loved this issue. It was fun. I won't even complain that Batman was able to use Brainy's flight ring when it was established a long time ago the rings are genetically encoded to the owner and won't work for anyone else.

Especially when Mark Waid was the writer of that as pointed out near the middle of this blog .
Exnihil: Novelty, if he had a power, the obvious one to me would of course be "The Power of Grayskull"

I thought the issue was okay, but I loved #2 of the current B&B series much more. Somehow I felt that the Legion did not get enough room in this story. On the other hand I also found out once more that I don't care a *** damn about this Waid-Legion version. That is a pity considering this is the first full legion issue ever drawn by my favorite George Perez.
His art was good, but I don't consider Wiacek to be his best inker - if you compare this book to the tremendous Avengers run (Inker Al Vey) or to some of Perez own stuff (Crimson Plague, Sachs and Violens inked by himself) you just get disappointed with this performance. The art looks kinda flat to me.
Still, it will be interesting to see how the story will be ending - and how they will shoehorn it into continuity...

Not really a problem when you consider that Brainy's ring was established to be different than all the others in this issue. Knowing this version of Brainy, he probably built his to be "the ONE ring to RULE THEM ALL".

I agree Chemical King. I wish Perez had a really strong inker. Wiack, Vey, Kesel, Ordway(!). The art the first few issues looked better. His Batman, Supergirl, and Green Lantern looked amazing in every issue though.

I loved the art except for the cover and splash page.
I do have a problem with Batman subduing/evading 21 Legionnaires singlehandedly though, especially considering he was in a strange futuristic city and was commandeering a flight ring he should've had no idea how to operate. How did he even find his way out of HQ?
And why didn't Colossal Boy just shrink to fly through the alley? It ain't brain surgery.
And Brainy, being the control freak that he is, would've undoubtedly made his ring even more exclusive than anyone else's imho.
Still, these are mostly quibbles.

Well it is a comic book, so the comic book sized hole in the plot can't be questioned.
If Brainy had the power to update the ring's firmware to allow tracking from his console he should also have had the power to shut it down. Also he could have blown it up like the Dominator virus did to Lyle's in the Legion's own title. But i digress.

I dunno, Brainy seems like the kind of arrogant bastard who would never believe anyone could best him. Therefore, why bother having an override for his own ring? I'm just sayin'...
Also do we know when in the Legion title this takes place? Obviously after Dream Girl dies but before Supergirl comes, yes? If that's the case, the Dominator virus would have yet to seize hold and-- more than that-- I don't think Brainy was planning on harming Batman. Stop him, yes. Blow his arm off, no. Besides the ethical issues, it could affect the past. And I seriously doubt Brainy wants that on his conscience.

The fact that Bats was melded with Tharok may explain why he had some knowledge of 31st century tech, city layout, etc. Heck, he may have retained some cyborg powers and was able to lojack the ring.

Has to be, Except there's no Cosmic Boy (but also no Sun Boy, Dream Boy or Wanderers) But then why aren't the Legion mentioning that other 21st Century refugee that was running around before Kara showed up? Seems if Batman got back somehow, it would hold at least a clue of how to get Kara back.

Cosmic Boy, Dream Boy, and Sun Boy are on the splash page even if they don't appear in the story.

No one in Bedard's Supergirl/LSH arc has yet to see "Lord Validus" in the flesh, so this issue must take place after it.

I would place this in the future as well. It couldn't be before Supergirl appeared because Brainy would have been taking care of a body.
Or... It happened on Earth-B. The earth all Brave and the Bold team ups that don't fit happen. Oh wait was that only pre-crisis.

That *could* explain why Batman was talking about his secret missions during WW2 during the issue...
