Beautiful! One for the ages.

Sigh. Loved the second kiss. And the Maid of Honor dress. And the uniformes.

Me too. I loved the crowd chanting, "Kiss her again".

I loved the service itself. Our choir sang Parry's "I Was Glad" as our anthem on Easter Day, so it was wonderful to hear it sung as the bride processed in. The music and the ceremony were perfect.
The only character in all of literature who has been described as "badnass" while using the phrase "vile miscreant."

Seriously it's as if nothing important happened in the world yesterday. I am fascinated by the coverage on American television. Didn't the patriots of yore usurp the monarchy because it was illogical that someone should inherit high office solely because of who their mother and father are? Yet put some red serge on a man put a woman in a tiara and a wedding dress and your media seem ready to sing God Save the King. I am already dreading the bill to taxpayers and the traffic disruptions when the newlyweds come to Canada this summer. If the circuses are over, lets get back to building our own green and pleasant lands.

Immediately before I watched coverage of the wedding, I saw a news report of a woman in Alabama who had lost everything in a tornado, including irreplaceable possessions handed down by her mother. I couldn't help but be struck by the contrast between these two stories.
I don't fault people for being fascinated by British royalty and royal weddings. In some ways, this fascination mirrors the appeal that super-heroes have for us: They represent wish fulfillment and heroic figures ("hero" being defined loosely as someone we look up to, for whatever reason). As Power Boy said, it's also nice to see something positive in the news these days.
But I think we need to keep perspective. In the overall scheme of things, the wedding of two royals does not amount to a hill of beans for most of us.

I truly hope that they are happy in their marraige, but I had absolutely zero interest in watching anything to do with their big day. And outside of about five seconds of a reprter talking about it as I put my shoes on yesterday before work...I succeded (My wife turned on the television as I was getting ready to walk out the door...I'm just glad she didn't get up early to watch it.
My own personal life and that of my friends kept the empotional impact of the day way more than big enough. An extremely sad day for some friends of mine.
Active LMB character is still Beast Boy.

If the circuses are over, lets get back to building our own green and pleasant lands. Don't even get me started. Thank Dog you're here, TL. I'd hate to have to be the only sourpuss in the ranks. Of course, I caught hell on a political board late last year for something similar. I defended a dude who wrote a sarcastic "ode" to the "royal marriage" of the Clintons' daughter to some super-rich White collar [bleep]. I have no interest in getting soppy and sentimental over a party to which I can't ever be invited, thrown by and for people who only see me as a convenience-- if they can see me at all. I always find this stuff onerous and stupid, and in the current economic climate, it's particularly insulting to me.

Grumps. There's always, on this Earth anyway, going to be the rich and the poor and the in-between. One thing that most of us have, no matter what our financial status, is the luxury of enjoying beautiful things even if they're not ours and good cheer over finding others who have something to celebrate. William may be 'royalty' but he works as an emergency/rescue helicopter pilot and she's from a middle class family. They went to college together. They aren't badguys, their just kids doing the best they can. And I like pretty dresses, lilies of the valley, beautiful churces with history and nice music. So, sorry. I read that 76% of interest came from women, anyway. Shep sure hated the assignment and grumped along for days before and certainly during it, too. lol

Oh, I'm so glad, 'cause there's not enough media surrounding it or anything!

The media sensationalist machine is going to do its thing no matter what. It's nice to see it covering something uplifting, like a wedding where millions of people are smiling and happy, instead of the usual suicide / drug overdose / tear someone down shenanigans.
There's plenty of other places real news is being covered. And its just as much being pushed down your throat as the Royal Wedding.
She looked pretty damn beautiful!
And who doesn't want to have a beer with Prince Harry?

I'm not particularly interested in modern royalty; they strike me as being little more than extremely expensive national mascots.
I do, however, hope the marriage of Kate and Harry is more successful than the sham marriage that led to his birth.

meh. Kids? they are in their early thirties, aren't they? Late twenties any way.
Hey, I got nothing against them. But I don't really care about them either.
What I'm not looking forward to is the next ten years of shocking scandals and devastating revelations plastered all over the news.
but then, I don't watch it anymore, so its no skin off my nose.
Damn you, you kids! Get off my lawn or I'm callin' tha cops!
Something pithy!

They are second in line to be the King and Queen of the UK and Canada. I ask why this is so and why it remains so. The only reason is that at some time immemorial they were the strongest and the weaker people who became their subjects sought their protection.
I'm no believer in a republic for its own sake but to me the Monarchy has to prove that it is still relevant in today's world.
The royal wedding cost over 60 million dollars. The population of the UK is around 60 million people. I think you can work out the cost indirectly paid by each of taxpayer in the UK.
Imagine the outrage if each American taxpayer were charged $1million dollars when President Obama's daughters get married.

Let's hear it for the hats! Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, in particular. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huqmuVFYga8&feature=related Seriously folks, the British monarchy is an anachronism. It wouldn't be created today. It is, though, part of the UK's rich and colorful history. The royal family generates revenue in terms of tourism and diplomatic endeavors. I'm sure some people object to any tax payer support that goes to it. I've read accounts that say that the overall percentage of the national budget is small and that abolishing the monarchy would actually result in a financial loss for the UK. Who knows, for sure. I'm no expert on their budget. As pop culture icons and fashionistas they totally rock. I love the kisses and the hats. No apologies. Regarding the excessive coverage - I wouldn't mind at all if it was confined to the entertainment shows and channels. Unfortunately, real journalism in the age of profit driven 24 hour cable news is an anachronism too. That's true whether there's a royal wedding going on or not.

Versailles seems to get along well enough without a royal family living there.

Well, I know folks who've gone to Colonial Williamsburg (for example) and had a marvelous time. But I'm guessing the employees who work there as "villagers" don't cost as much to maintain as the Royals do.

I do, however, hope the marriage of Kate and Harry is more successful than the sham marriage that led to his birth. She married William, sweetie. And William is hoping the same thing, no sham marriage, that's why they've know each other for 10 years. And one of the infos in the coverage is that it costs the taxpayers $1.74 each per year for the royal family. The estimate on windfall for England from the event was somewhere between $300-$600 million, so the profit % was pretty good. I, myself, didn't watch the whole thing, but Diana fascinated me at one time. And rickshaw - at 60, anyone under 45 is pretty much a 'kid' to me. My husband's boys are in their early to middle 50s. So, there you go, it's all relative.
