Matthew. I initially missed the first episode that Fox aired (the Train Job), but a friend taped it and we watched it that weekend. I was well intrigued about five minutes in, and totally sold when Mal kicked Nisca's henchman into Serenity's port engine. "This," I thought to myself, "is what Han Solo would be like if the Rebels had lost." I didn't miss another episode.

I think I actually stopped watching a few eps in, but later started watching again and was really starting to get into it by the time the plug was pulled. Seeing "Serenity" the second time might have actually been a better experience. First time around, there might've been too many expectations and it's harder to take it all in cuz you just wanna see what happens. I think I could appreciate it more for what it was on second viewing.

I wasn't "hooked" by Firefly when it originally aired either. It seemed to jump into things immediately with little or no explanation. When I bought the DVD, I found out that this was because the first episode that set up everything was actually shown last! The Friday time slot didn't help either. I caught about three more episodes and kinda liked it but wasn't overly impressed.
But when I found out there would be a feature, that convinced me to buy the DVD set, and I really fell in love with it as I watched. I think, had it continued, it had the potential to dethrone by a mile "Buffy" and "Angel" as Joss's best series.
Has anyone noticed how the production values of "Firefly" absolutely blow away those of Buffy and Angel? The special effects, the lighting and everything else about the presentation absolutely put them to shame! Is this because "Firefly" was on Fox instead of WB or UPN and maybe got a bigger budget? Am I the only one who feels this way?
And I really like that the Firefly universe is bereft of kooky aliens and what-not. It really helps keep it down to Earth, so to speak, and helps to futher distinguish it from Stars Trek and Wars and the rest. That's something I like about the new Battlestar Galactica, too.
Still "Lardy" to my friends!

I usually see "Serenity" as "Han Solo, the series" because there are a lot of parallels and being from Han's pov rather than Luke's, it's a more adult story. But watching the movie, seeing them really take on the Alliance reminded me of "Blake's 7" -- especially when they were dying and all getting shot to heck.
And the first time around, I missed Jayne's "swinging cod" comment (now I just need someone to translate all that Chinese...)

Go to fireflyfans.net Somewhere on there is a link to a site that translates all the Manderin Chinese used in each episode. It's really funny. One phrase of frustration blurted out by Mal translates to something like, "The entire universe is stuffed up my ass!!"

Went to see it again on Saturday. That's the third time I've seen it and it just keeps getting better. Couple of things I noticed this time 'round: Fanty really is prettier than Mingo. The subliminal "trigger" code is briefly visible when River's watching it. When Simon is lying on the floor with a bullet in him near the end, he has a visible bruise on his throat, presumably from when River punched him there earlier in the movie.
I love that I can't wait to watch it again. I'm just not getting tired of this movie.

You know, at the risk of sounding stupid, I have just now gotten that Firefly/Serenity and the WaK LSH have a lot in common conceptually.

That's why I started reading, actually. Cos really reminded me of Mal and it just spread from there... What can I say?? I'm a sucker for sci-fi futures and the boys that try to run them...

I saw Serenity here in Austin at the Alamo Drafthouse. Not only did the have this little mockumentry about the main characters and wherethey have been before. But we got a 10 min lesson on how to really cuss in Chinese. It was awesome. The whole audiencewas repeating the words all togthere and stuff.

I finaly got to watch it! It was great; I want to see more! I can't wait till it comes out on dvd so I can watch with subtitles and catch the dialogue I missed. (The sound in the local theater tends to roar. Sometimes that's an advantage, though.)
Now I'm going to have to track down the dvd box set.

I only got to see one epi of the tv show. Love to see the south risen again, lol. Minus the slavery thing, of course. Anyway, went and saw the movie. Loved it. This is the way a good scifi movie should play to me. Smart, with a little humor mixed in, and action, action, action.
It did feel a little like a tv movie blown up and mixed better for the theater's, but it was still a lot of fun.

How much? And remember, it looks like it was filmed tv style, which probably made it much cheaper to produce than a regular movie.

The budget for Serenerty was around $40 million. Through Friday the 21st the domestic box office has only brought in a little over $23 million.

dang. yeah, that ain't good. And its a shame, it was a good movie. But, whadda ya gonna do. Money is tight and people are finding out that there are cheaper ways to have fun. When we went, i didn't have anything to eat. My wife and i had tickets ($14.00), she had a drink ($4.00), popcorn ($3.50 for a small), and some hot tomale candies ($3.00) for a grand total of over $20.
$20.00 for a visceral experience that you will have only vague memories of. It's why i can't afford to go to concerts anymore.

DVDs coming out only 3-5 months after movies hit theatres is a major disincentive pay a bunch of cash to go out and sit in a room with obnoxious teenagers and other idiots. If I ever catch a moron who's cell phone rings in the middle of the movie...
Anyways, the recent surveys are showing that with the growing number of big screen HDTVs at home and movies coming out quick, customer preferences are shifting. It's like the single issue/TPB discussion in comics .
I'm sure some hot-shot guy runs linear programs to determine how soon to release movies on DVD to max out revenues. Given consumer survey data, such a predictive model is pretty easy to cook up in Excel.
Serenity should be coming out pretty quick, I'd imagine.
