I agree the Perot comparison seems more applicable, but I was trying to think of way this might actually work to Palin's advantage. I could actually see her kind of withdrawing from the scene, sitting out the 2012 election cycle, doing something non-political but public service related in the meantime, and then emerging as a serious presidential contender in 2016. Which would be very much a Nixon model.
