Wow! Baylor has been impressive in the first half. Should be a wild 2nd half with both these teams.

That was a great game, with Baylor hanging on to win a thriller.

What a great game! It doesn't bode well that most of us blew the first game! Congrats to Lardy and Legion Tracker for getting that one! I would likely watch any game that features more shots of Samantha Steele though. Wow...
Ok, here are the rest of my picks:
Boston College Southern Cal OCLA Notre Dame BYU South Carolina Boise State Oregon Maryland
Good luck to everyone!

I figured TCU would take a step back without Andy Dalton and that an opening road test would be too much, hence the pick. Looking at the final result, I'm not sure about my reasoning. I know TCU was behind a ton and nearly won it anyway. Luck o' the draw, I guess!

Finally. Spurrier got his head outta his rectum, put in the real quarterback, and won the game.

I'm not sure about your reasoning either, Lardy. It is tough to fault the offense (or the quarterback) when your team scores almost 50 points. It seems like the problem must be with the defense somewhere.
Well, I didn't do well this week. Gonna be an interesting year, it seems.

There were lots of very close, compelling games and lots of blow outs. Not so many in between.

Week 1 - Only the Monday night game remains between Maryland and Miami. Following are some notes on the other games.
1) TCU #14 v Baylor (at Baylor) - Friday 9/2 8pm - Wow! This was a great game and every bit the nail biter I predicted. Certainly deserved the upset alert tag I gave it because that's exactly what happened. (I should have gone with my gut and picked Baylor) Baylor actually outplayed the Toads for most of the game but TCU made a furious and determined comeback in the fourth quarter and almost pulled it out. The Baylor QB is an outstanding player and should begin to get lots of attention from the media if he continues to play as he did on Friday night.
Final Score: Baylor 50 TCU 48
2) Northwestern v Boston College (at BC) - Northwestern lost their starting QB and Heisman candidate, Dan Persa, just before the game. However, his replacement, Kain Colter, was able to manage their up tempo offense very well and the BC Eagles seemed to be confused by the misdirection most of the game.
Final Score: Northwester 24 Boston College 17
3) Minnesota v Southern Cal (at Southern Cal) - USC took a 19-3 lead into halftime and looked to be on their way to an easy victory over a Minnesota team that has been a Big 10 doormat for some time. However, new coach Jerry Kill sure got his team's attention during half time and the Gophers came out looking like a new team in the third quarter. The Gophers posted 14 unanswered points in the second half and were charging down the field from their 9 yard line for what would have been a winning score had USC's Torin Harris not intercepted a Minnesota pass with 53 seconds remaining in the game. That ended the Gopher threat and allowed the Trojans to survive a huge scare in their season opener.
Final Score: USC 19 Minnesota 17
4) UCLA v Houston (at Houston) - Didn't get to see any of this game so I'll I can say is that from all reports Houston QB Case Keenum, return from his season ending ACL injury last year (coincidentally against UCLA last September) and looked to be completely back to normal.
Final Score: Houston 38 UCLA 34
5) South Florida v Notre Dame #16 (at Notre Dame) ~ The Fighting Irish didn't seem to have much fight in them for most of this game. USF dominated them on offense from the start and the Bulls defense managed to take the ball away from ND every single time they seemed to get their act together a little bit and threatened to score. Five times the Bulls caused the Irish to fumble or pick off a pass, three times inside their own 10 yard line with the Irish about to score. On top of that, various weather delays, totaling over three hours, kept the Irish from establishing themselves. Even a switch in QBs didn't help. All in all, it was a very disturbing start to a much anticipated season for Notre Dame.
Final Score: USF 23 Notre Dame 20
6) BYU v Ole Miss (at Ole Miss) ~ Didn't get to see any of this game either, just highlights. From all the reports and recaps it sounds as if BYU put on one heck of a comeback. They were down 13-0 halfway through the 4th quarter when they finally found their stride and came back to beat Ole Miss by 1 point.
Final score: BYU 14 Ole Miss 13
7) East Carolina v South Carolina #12 (in Charlotte, NC) ~ Can't say I've ever understood Spurrier's philosphy when it comes to handling his quarterbacks and yesterday did nothing to shed any light on it for me. All the reports I had heard prior to this weekend had troubled and troublesome QB Stephen Garcia as the starting QB. Lo and behold, the Old Ball Coach had other thoughts and inserted 2nd string QB Connor Shaw to start the game. By the end of the first quarter the game was turning into a nightmare for the Gamecocks and they were down 17-0 to the East Carolina Pirates. That's when Spurrier pulled Shaw and sent in Garcia. Garcia rallied his team and eventually lead them to a satisfying victory over the Pirates. According to Coach Spurrier, Garcia will start next week against Georgia but I would wait until game time before placing any bets on that!
Final Score: South Carolina 56 East Carolina 37
8) Boise State #5 v Georgia #19 (at Georgia) ~ In the last three seasons, Boise State has started the season with victories against Oregon, Virginia Tech and now Georgia. Maybe now people will begin to believe that they are for real. Kellen Moore threw for 241 yards completing 28 of 34 passes and 3 touchdown passes and the Broncos also added 129 rushing yards for a total output of 390 yards on offense in a Georgia Dome (neutral field, lol) full of Georgia faithful. Didn't really matter though.
Final Score: Bosie State 35 Georgia 21
9) Oregon #3 v LSU #4 (at LSU) LSU played without their 1st string QB but Jarrett Lee looked more than equal to the task. Oregon on the other hand couldn't overcome the lose of their corner back/punt return man and seemed to struggle for much of the game. They had 95 penalty yards and 4 turnovers, one of them a fumbled punt that led directly to an LSU touchdown.
Final Score: LSU 40 Oregon 27

Week 1 1) TCU (Wrong) 2) Northwestern (correct guess) 3) Minnesota (wrong) 4) Houston (correct guess) 5) Notre Dame (wrong) 6) Ole Miss (wrong) 7) South Carolina (correct guess) 8) Boise State (correct guess) 9) LSU (correct guess) 10)Miami
The teams that lost only lost by somewhere between 1 - 3 points.
Wow. I'm looking at .500 at worst at this point. Not bad for a total random guess. Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Well I was worried about the SC game in the first quarter. Spurrier went on post game about how Shaw did better than Garcia in practice, but that's practice. actual game time is something else, and I think it showed. Garcia's starter for the Georgia Bulldogs game.
Didn't get to see any of the other games, though. Just glad Boise beat GB first. Gettem headed down before we get them.

Thanks Lardy, it was actually a pretty good game considering how depleted our defense was. But those penalties late in the game really hurt. We have a bunch of work to do to get ready for Ohio State but we 'll have 5 of our best guys back by then so we shall see.
