Now that it's over, I'll restate my biggest criticism of the series - which is that it didn't really take advantage of its timeframe. They had a chance to rejuevenate the series by breaking out of the same old kinds of storylines and infusing it with more mature subject matter. I was excited by the notion of a Trek series that hit a little closer to home, with a crew that wasn't that much removed from us - something like "The West Wing" in space, a series where space really seemed like the final frontier - mysterious and scary. But they fell right into the same old formulas - what a shame...

I've always been more of an original-Trek dude (I did enjoy the few eps of ST: Enterprise I caught).
NETFLIX now has all seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation for instant viewing. I'm 4 episodes in, and find it very similar in theme to original-Trek, with some engaging characters... so I guess I'm going to continue going where I haven't gone before with ST:TNG!

This may get me banned here but I was never a huge fan of the trek. My wife, on the other hand, loves it. However, like every geek out here in americaland, I've seen my fair share of episodes... of the original and NextGen. Never watched the other shows. I did see a couple with the space station and thought the brunette lady was smokin' hot, but thats about it for anything after the second series. Maybe I'll catch some stuff on Netflix. I would have loved to see more firefly.

If I wanted to re-invigorate the franchise for TV, I'd have it set in the future again. Only now, the Federation has lost a lot of ground. Some longtime friends have fallen by the wayside or joined another planetary conglomeration. maybe due to a civil war amoungst the planets. Lots less friends, lot dirtier universe to play in.
you could still have the cerebral solutions at times, but much more work and effort would go into either rebuilding old friendships or making new ones with planets that may not be the cream of the galaxy.
This enterprise would be a genuine War Class ship. the problem I had with Next Gen was that it was so clean. It showed a shining future... that was really boring.
Take away some of the strength of the Federation. Put the ship further out on the fringes. Even the enterprise would be required to get a bit dirty. The new captain and crew would be a bit more on the fighter/brawler side that has to almost relearn diplomacy. Have heavily uneasy alliances that frequently shift. Put them on less secure footing.
And for lords sake have some real action. No more spending half an episode at the bar with whoopi being gently guided into the light. They even neutered Worf.
In short, give them their balls back.

Thanks for clarifying the Captain Janeway issue for me, Rick.
I liked that humans could realize their potential in NG, without always grubbing in the dirt and fighting each other. It was interesting seeing us deal with issues without going for the guns first.
We got that with the first ST.
I DID feel that Janeway pushed the edge with trying to do things the gentile way, sometimes, especially because she didn't have any backup and the crew's lives were her responsibility.
They started out with Enterprise trying to have the crew/captain being altruistic, but changed that with the attack on Earth and the subsequent war.
Archer fought pretty hard those last few years even though he got softer on his views concerning Vulcans.

I think alot of it has to do with whatever degree of post-modernism we are in. I often have trouble with the utopian aspects of Star Trek (also the Legion of Super-Heroes). I personally thought they cancelled Enterprise when it was starting to get good. They dealt with immigration, which was and is an important topic in the United States today. As a viewer I tend to like things that are realistic and relevant.

So, as I said I'm watching ST: TNG for the first time, after always being primarily a TOS guy (I enjoyed a handful of ST Enterprise eps I saw). I am finding TNG a bit too talky-n-thinky and less actiony and fun than TOS. And this "Q" guy. Sure, he's kinda cute, and a major drama queen, but he's been in 2 eps of Season 1 so far, and I still ain't sold... I do hope he isn't a semi-regular non-menace. He's kinda dull. And not enough people get their shirts ripped off, like Kirk in TOS. I totally think Commander Ryker needs his shirt ripped off at least every other episode. Why is this not happening? So far, I'm most digging Captain Picard ("Make it so" is my newest catchphrase; I'm bringing it totes back), Commander Ryker and Counselor Troi (mind powers!!). The Ferengi seem to be fun menaces, after appearing twice; I kinda had a crush on one of them, the 'cute' one that arrested his "daimon"/captain. I wish there were a few more homages to TOS... Dr. Crusher needs to be saying "He's dead, Jean-Luc..." a lot more. I would probably hate Wesley Crusher a lot more if I didn't find him so darned cute. I'm sure back in 1987 I would have been totes crushing on him. Oh well, I'm in for awhile, anyway. Hoping things pick up and we spend a bit LESS time on the Enterprise and MORE time on ridonkulous planets that make no sense. And someone really should die at least every third episode or so. Off to Season 1 episode 10...

In Season 2 Riker grows his beard and I think the stories get better.
There is a good Q episode (IMO) where Q is striped of his powers and left on the Enterprize. Not sure what season that is in except to say that it isn't in season 1.
I don't know if you caught it, but in the first episode, Troi calls Riker "Bill". Forever afterwards, he goes by "Will".

The first season of TNG was very talky and dull. They were still finding their way with the series. Things do get better from Season Two onwards.

I'm sure back in 1987 I would have been totes crushing on him.[/QB] Wesley Crusher reviewed some Star Trek episodes for TVland, which puts things in hilarious perspective. Ronald D. Moore, who becomes a writer for TNG and Deep Space Nine gave a helpful interview. This might explain some of the differences between earlier and later episodes: http://au.movies.ign.com/articles/444/444306p1.html

My two NG loves were Picard and Data. I have a photo of him and Spock with the actor's signatures. sigh Ferengis are major players in Deep Space Nine, by the way. IIRC, we only see as a strong part of a story in NG one more time. It's one of my all time favorite ST stories, it's centered on an empath. There's so many good ones, mostly all after the Diane Duane story (good story) toward the end of the first year, like Quis and HWL said. Imo, there were a number of good Q based episodes over the years. Did you ever see the Squire of Gothos in the original series? I've read the he (and his parents) were actually the first appearance of the Q. Retroactively, of course.

Peter David did a book about Q and the connections to the Squire of Gothos. Very good read.

Lash, stick with it! Season 1 (and most of Season 2, IMO) were frightfully dull, but from S3-up, it's golden. That said, I still wouldn't skip the first 2 for context and because there are a few gems here and there.
Q and Lwaxana Troi guest star a lot over the seven seasons. I guarantee that both will grow on you as the eps go by! Q grows into more of a story facilitator than a menace as he learns more and more about humanity. His and Lwaxana's interactions with Picard grow more and more priceless as their appearances increase!
