"Wait a minute bub!" Looks like Cham was using this line before a certain hairy mutant. So Cham gets sent to another dimension after he switched spots with Bouncing Boy. eh. I like Shooter's Cham the last few issues. It looks like he took a liking to the character.

This seems like a good place to bring up my theory that Nadir is really Orando after being pushed through not only another dimension but also into the past.

Well Nadir seems to be a parallel Avalon to tell the truth. (It means opposite in arabic by the way. do a search on wiki and you see it's a pretty cool word)

I don't know much about Orando. Do they have any connection to Camelot? Reading these old stories I've noticed many of the planets are still stuck in the medieval scenery. smile

It is weird that there are so many "medieval" planets in the Legion. Both Shooter and Levitz seemed to really like the idea.

It was because of their special-effects budget. They saved money by reusing sets from other comic books.

Shooter really liked Karate Kid. When I started reading the Legion he wasn't used much and then he died. In the Legion's Who Who he wasn't mentioned much either. But he certainly was a cornerstone on the team back in the Shooter days.

Him taking on the entire Fatal Five rocked!

And the question...is this the first time Kono juice was mentioned? (Adv 378)

Adventure #380 sure was wacky. It might be the best Ultra Boy issue to date though. Really showed him off.

Was this by Shooter? And what was Shooter's last issue?

Yes, Shooter wrote # 380, which was the last of the Legion's Adventure run. Shooter continued as writer into the Action run that followed, though he wrote only Action # 378, 380-82, and 384.

Reading some of the Action back-ups. Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

Good stuff! Shooter really went for character stories here. MEL's parents. Brin become an addict! And finally Eltro! The Eltro was pretty powerful considering the v4 stuff. Shooter finished strong.

I agree, Jorge. "The Forbidden Fruit" in # 378 is my favorite of the Action run because it was so unlike any other Legion story I'd read before. It shows how effective science fiction can be when you do a drug story, but change the drug to a fruit, instead!

This story was approved by the Comics Code Authority, whereas Stan Lee's anti-drug story in Amazing Spider-Man was not. Guess the censors didn't see the connection.

I believe that Shooter's story was actually toned down to meet the Comic Code.

I'm a big fan of the Action back-ups. The MEL story is especially poignant since it was heavily drawn from Shooter's own life.

EDE, that makes sense. Shooter being so successful so young. That was a pretty good story. He made sure to give us some nice character moments towards the end. Brin, Cham, Tenzil. Did he do the Jo story? The one Ultra Boy was basically Superboy (while Mon-El and Superboy took care of the real problem).

Also was Brin's addiction ever brought up again? I want to say it was mentioned somewhere later.

Action #390 & 391 really is a departure from Shooter's stuff. Some modern politics thrown in. Rebels vs. the government, etc. You know it probably benefitted from being a short story. But certainly a style difference.

The next issue (392) Saturn Girl gets a new costume. So it wasn't really Cockrum who redesigned this one but K. Haven Metzger from Columbia City, Ind.??? Cool.

To be clear, Action # 390 and 391 were written by E. Nelson Bridwell, not Shooter, and # 392 was written by Cary Bates.

By the way, I'm not sure, but I think K. Haven Metzger is Kim Metzger, who became an associate (assistant?) editor at Comics Buyer's Guide during the 1980s. Does anybody know for sure?

I take it you're reading Adventure # 267, the Legion's second appearance? Not one of Jerry Siegel's better stories.

Yeah, that's a pretty weak story. They're pretty much hit or miss up until Adventure #300, and that's definitely one of the misses.

Hey Ultra Jorge, if you're reading the comics from the beginning, any chance you'd want to help flesh out and create entries at the Legion Wiki?

Michael, I'm not that good at that stuff. There are a few guys here that could do it justice but I'm not one of them. Sorry.

Reading Lightning Lad's ressurection (Adv 312). Now I know where Levitz got that white dwarf star from. smile

Jorg, I think you've pretty much convinced me to reread all the Shooter stories as soon as I get the chance laugh As soon as I finish Harry Potter, that is.

You know, I always thought there was a lag b/t the end of Adventure and the Action Comics back-ups, but I guess not? By lag, I mean, period where no Legion comics were published. Writing that out though, I feel like I'm wrong.

Love the Adventure #380 story!

Cobie, there was no gap in the publishing schedule. Adv. # 380 was cover-dated May 1969. The Action series began with a reprint (of Adv. # 300) in Act. # 377, June 1969, with new stories immediately following.

Isn't the lag between their losing their spot in Action and becoming the back-up in Superboy?
