I caught this tonight. Was this the first episode?

Batman & Aquaman vs Ocean Master & Black Manta. Also a little bit before the opening credits has Batman fighting Felix Faust Click Here For A Spoilerwith the help of the Atom.

The animation style seems more in line with Harvey Birdman then any of the other DC superhero animation. Maybe they were going for a New Frontiers look.

The story was pretty straight forward. This Aquaman is not how he has been portrayed ever. He is kind of abnoxious and ego-centric. Still Batman and Aquaman regard each other as friends, which I found refreshing. If this is an indication that they will be having Batman treat his co-stars as equals and not look down his cowl at them, I welcome it.

For me, it will take a little getting used to the style and tone. Definitely a light-hearted tone. Not bad. Not everyone's cup of tea. Worth at least one view.

I liked the other episodes, and Batman's lines, especially when we see Batman's greatest enemy.

But Aquaman flexing his pecs to the public...

It's like getting bleach and ground up glass injected straight into your eyes

So far Batman teamed up with Blue Beetle (Jaime) to save a species of jelly-fish power people from Kanjar Ro. It rawked.

Then, recently-reformed Plastic Man had to help Batman stop Gorilla Grodd from (of course) turning humans into apes. A generally good episode, even if tying Plastic Man's origin to Batman seems incongruous.

I really enjoyed the take on Aquaman, though it was jarringly unexpected. The guys running this show are talented creators and their comic book street cred is unquestionable. Why not have Aquaman a larger than life, blowhard king. Arthur's been a one-note tragic figure since they killed Aquababy back in the 13th century, so it's nice to have something different. The brooding, antisocial king-of-the-sea always-threatenting-the-surface-dwellers niche was already perfectly filled by Namor, anyway. I cracked up at Aquaman flexing his pecks to his adoring public. After all, if Ahnold can be a not totally incompetent governator of Caw-lee-forn-ya, why can't Aquaman be a successful king and hero AND be a vainglorious blowhard? And, it's a nice contrast with the restrained, uber-controlled Batman, who is the star of the show.

This is a gorgeous show, by the way. The animation style is a beautiful homage to the best aspects of Saul Bass/jet age animation, with very few of the defects. I think it's definitely more mid-sixties than New Frontier, though. The opening credit sequence, with a cityscape made out of Superhero names, is really worth seeing.

It's interesting to contrast this show with Waid's take on the B&B comic. I have to say the show is, with a few exceptions, far superior, even if it is revisiting some oft-used comic stories (like Grodd's apemaker machine, which has been in Justice League, the new Super Friends comic, and now B&B). While it might seem more limiting, I actually think doing a team-up series with an "anchor" character does a better job of illuminating all the characters. The B&B Batman is every bit the always-prepared, always suspicious badass that you expect. The one crucial difference between B&B Batman and, say, Frank Miller's, is that B&B appreciates and makes use of the other heroes in his universe, rather than just disdaining them. It's a fine line to walk, putting an authentic Batman in non-Batman settings, but so far the show's done a great job of productive walking that high-tension line. The early issues of Waid's B&B comic did it, too, especially the Legion team-up. I wish they had kept up that approach.

Is nobody watching this?
So far we've seen Aquaman, Blue Beetle, Green Arrow, Red Tornado, Bwana Beast(?),Wildcat and The Outsiders with "drive by" vignettes of a few others. Next week features Deadman.

The retro-thing is amusing and the art's pretty good overall. I've enjoyed it but I hope like heck it's not going to be a long running series. One season or maybe two should be plenty.

I think it's a fun series. Despite being lighter in tone, it still feels like Batman. And it's always fun to see other aspects or characters of the DCU in animated form.

I've only seen the Plastic Man episode.

I would watch it, but I resent that the producers went with this series rather than fight to keep Legion going over on to Cartoon Network.

I'll probably try to watch it when I get over it.

The very fact that they had R. Lee Ermey do Wildcat makes this show okay in my book.

I (heart) Gary's response. Me too me too (ad infinitum)

..but I'm a sucker for these DC cartoons so I'm already onboard.

I missed Plas (dangit) so now I have to watch for the rerun.

I was totally burned out on animated Batman, but this has revitalized my interest in the character. And all the other heroes are great.

And what I heard from a good, official source is that no amount of fighting would have saved "Legion." Unfortunately, a key person just didn't "get it."

I don't know anything about B'Wana beast - is that whole "combining two animals into one composite thing" his power in the comics?

The show is great. The only episode I would quibble with was the Batman/Green Arrow Merlin episode. Otherwise, it is just incredible the amount of story and character they are cramming into a 30-minute show. The B'wana beast teaser is a perfect example -- the character probably doesn't warrant more scream time than he got, but what he got summed him up perfectly. And Wildcat and the Outsiders were terrific, especially Katanna. My one quibble so far is that the team-ups inevitably lead to situations where there is too much Bat-prosthetic gear (flying, underwater, in space, blowing things up) and not enough Bat-detecting and hitting. But it's a great show.

I love the opening action sequences. They're fun little tidbits that give us a chance to see more DCU characters brought to life on screen.

I don't mind the lack of detective stuff since it's meant to be an action-packed show. It wouldn't surprise me if they have one episode (maybe with the Question??) that highlights Batman's detective skills, but they did give Batman an encyclopedic knowledge of *everything* which at least highlights his intelligence.

And during the Aquaman show, I was a little disappointed Batman didn't pull out (or at least make reference to) his "Bat-Shark repellant" wink

Yeah but don't you have to be hanging upside down off a rope ladder for it to work? (heh heh) That would have been a nice nod to the Adam West/Burt Ward TV show.

Not bad. Deadman's appearances are always strange and it was no different in the 'toon. Nice to see Boston Brand make it into the TV DCU.

The most fun (for me) in this episode was Green Arrow and Speedy! Ollie we've seen before but I loved seeing them include Roy. Not the Titans Go! Speedy but the Silver Age red headed side kick with the red outfit, the snappy patter (aka stupid jokes) and wearing a feather in a silly Robin Hood hat.

Very cool.

All Blue Beetle! Ted, Jamie and even a glimpse of Dan Garret. DC rewrites Ted's death and makes it a heroic sacrifice instead of the mess from Countdown. Ted has an uncle, we get to see the bug in action and eventually all is right in the world.
The writers gave Ted a few good lines, worth a chuckle or two and Bats is a little more human than usual.
I think it comes on again this evening on the Cartoon Network. If you're a Blue Beetle fan this is a must watch episode!

Next week - Plastic Man AND Elongated Man!

Yeah, I get the feeling we're going to see that idea played out. In the promo for next week it looks like Plas and Ralph are seriously trying to outdo each other and screwing it up with their competition.
I'll have to see the ad again to see what else is going on.

Another great BB&B episode! I think it got the essence of both Jaime and Ted in just a few short minutes. That is great storytelling. Tucker is really mining some of the best DC ideas (e.g., Science Island) while ignoring some of the worst (e.g., Ted Kord getting shot in the head by one of his best friends). I really hope Jaime's use on the show leads to some sort of bigger role for him other than being in a really drecky Teen Titans book. Bravo to Tucker for doing a show that can do so many things so well.

Huh? thought it was supposed to be Aquaman and Atom, not Plastic Man and E-Man for next week?

Both. I have absolutely no idea how they plan to use both duos but in the ad for next week we saw all four of them..plus Batman of course.

I thought for a moment it would be a rerun of the Plastic Man episode but Nightcrawler mentioned seeing that one and didn't mention the other three heroes. I'm hoping it really is a new one.

"E-Man" !!
I wish. I'm not a huge Joe Staton fan but I loved loved loved his original (Charlton Comics) E-Man run. I was kind of burned out on Staton by the time he started the (First Comics) second run of the book but I'll bet an animated version would kick boo-tay(!)

(I know you meant Elongated Man but saying E-Man gave me one of those, "Whoa! Great idea!" moments)

Tonight's Green Lantern episode was a hoot. It even included a spin on the classit "One Punch!" moment from JLI all those years back. Plus G'nort saved the day! What more can you ask for? Um, unless you're a Kyle Rayner or John Stewart fan because they were noticibly absent. Then again John certainly had enough face time on JL/JLU and I never cared about Kyle.

Oh, and Dr. Fate was the guest in the opening for those of you keeping track.

Yeah!

"How did HE get to be a Green Lantern?"
"He had an influential uncle."
It was darned cute. From Guy throwing a temper tantrum over breakfast to G'Nort using a cheat sheet for the GL Oath.
..and Bats thought he could trust Sinestro. Lots of good bits.

I liked the voice for Sinestro, but didn't catch the credits. Ah well, it was also nice to see so many familiar GL's from back in the day.

Gnort was a complete surprise! When Batman heard the howling, I started cheering. Sounded like Clancy Brown did Despero's voice. Man, he sounds evil. Hard to believe he's also Mister Crabs from Spongebob. That's acting! And Mogo, too! This show crams more DC goodness into 18 minutes than some DC books put out in a year of issues. If you're not watching this, you are missing out. My CBS owner (who hadn't seen it) was complaining that Batman was too "light," but in fact he's played pretty straight the vast majority of the time, and even more than the JLU Batman, this Bats has the Morrison "never give up, always a way" attitude that fits perfectly well in an otherwise light show.
