In the tradition of past NFL football threads here on the Anywhere Machine (the first started by Space Ranger), let's talk some professional football! (Estimated time before British LMBer switches talk to 'soccer': 5 posts!).

As tradition states, this thread shall be dedicated to FC laugh

So:

- Let's go Packers! Come on, one more great year for Brett Favre, with a [surprise] Superbowl ring? I want it! I'm breaking out my Ahman Green jersey if I have to! They need to start the right way--a good ol' fashion beating to Detroit will do it!

- Will the Patriots continue to dominate the league? Is it the Colts year, finally?

- Will the Bengals turn things around, finally giving Outdoor Miner hope?

- Will the ever annoying Eagles finally go away with their stupid Donovon McNabb soup commercials and the biggest jerk in sports, Terrell Owens?

[EDIT- I actually see that TO is auctioning his NFC championship ring for Hurricane Katrina relief. Thats a suprising and refreshing side of him, and I'm glad to see it]

- Will Michael Vick and the Falcons be as entertaining this year as he/they were two years ago? (Is it longer than that--am I getting that old?)

- Looking forward to the Steelers and Jerome Bettis playing a good year, and I'm hoping they do so. Bettis was my favorite player for YEARS, and I'd like him to finish his carreer with a strong season, including a solid playoff run.

- And the Raiders, the other team I root for (b/c all my roomates were Raiders fans in college). Can they ever recover after losing that SuperBowl? I hope so...I really wanted those guys to win that year and Gannon to get a ring. But jeez--16 penalties in the opening game for like a 150 yards? Ah, the Raiders...

Yah Football's back!!! Sorry UK members, Association Football is not Football. Though Canadians can rightfully claim to bringing the rugby game that evolved into Football to the US. Football widows... Blame Canada.

So will the NFC still bite the big one this year?

I see the Pats taking a step back. I did cheer for them but now they are just obnoxious. But the Colts? BWAHAHAHAHA.

The NFC? Um yeah I see the Vikings and the Giants doing well along with the Falcons.

It's gonna be the Steelers' year.

If we can judge by the manner in which the Steelers beat the bloody hell out of my Titans, it just might be their year. Those wideouts were open all day, and they can bring the third string RB and run for a jillion yards. I was SICK watching that game yesterday.

Sentients, you're all missing the point!

The question of the year is; Can JP Losman lead the Buffalo Bills to the Promised Land?

We have the DEFENSE! We have the SPECIAL TEAMS!

Can the almost-rookie QB get it done?

Losman looked good for 2/3 of the game yesterday. Then it looked like he got a little mentally tired or something. Not a bad start actually. He's definitely fearless running with the ball.

Detroit won? What's up with that?

Steelers! Rothlesberger's a local boy, so woot! woot! We have a few more Ohio QB's showing promise. Frye playing for Cleveland, Mauk down at Wake Forest, Kent Smith at Central Michigan (beat the evil Miami Redhawks), Brad Smith at Missouri, and Brady Quinn at ND.

Buffalo Bills? Eh. I am going to the game vs. Tampa this Sunday. Guess who I am rooting for?!

I love Brett Favre but not the Packers. don't root for them either.

To tell the truth man just like the last few years there is much parity IMO.

AFC? I still think the Patriots are the team to beat. But I like the Steelers...I think Bill Cower deserves a ring dammit! And the Kansas City Chiefs IMO have some mojo this year. The Colts may be in there as well.

NFC? eh. It's a toss up. The Falcons looked good tonight. I just don't have huge confidence in Vick. As Tamper Lad suggessted Giants may have a good season. I hope Tampa does but they have always let me down except for a few years when they were good and finally won a Super Bowl. Cowboys though may suprise some ppl. I've always believed Drew Bledsoe was an amazing QB personally.

Ranger.

You lose too.

What we need here is a little bit of perspective guys. Armoured rugby like wot you lot play is not and never will be football. Lots of fat blokes knocking ten bells out of each other lacks all the skill and finess of David Beckhams defense splitting passes, or Owens goal scoring prowess.

And such silly names you lot have. Falcon's Giants, Cowboys. Football needs proper names, like city or united.

I agree about Owens' scoring ability... but Atlanta did a good job stopping him from doing one of his inane celebrations last night on MNF.

I can't ever see Michael Owen's name without singing to myself "Michael Owen scores the goals--Alleluia!"

lol Well you did get Michael Owen's name wrong so as the North American idiom goes (oh look it's football based too)

Of course, I follow this thread with great interest wink but I'm not partial to one team or the other.

I did meet a real pro football player once, Peter Della Riva, who played for the Montreal Alouettes. We talked about raddichio.

Hmm. Good question. He looked real good in his first NFL start against Houston on Sunday. Came right out throwing when everyone was sure that McGahee would be running the ball all day. Drew the Texans off-side four times (or was it five?) in the first quarter with his hard count. He even showed some leadership by chewing out Josh Reed on the way off the field for dropping a ball on 3rd down (which is something I'll wager he'll have to do a lot of judging by Reed's performance the last two years).

All that being said, he was going up against the Houston Texans. Kind of hard to look bad against a team that seems so eager to beat itself week in and week out. Still, even against Houston the Bills had plenty of trouble trying to get the ball into the end-zone. I can say with full confidence that you can't expect Rian Lindell to go 5-5 on field goals every week like he did on Sunday. If the offense doesn't learn to finish off their drives then the Bills are going to be in a lot of trouble.

Losman is, for all intents and purposes, still a rookie. He's got a lot to learn, as evidenced by his miserable performance in the last pre-season game against Detroit. He's also got to learn to SLIDE when he takes off with the ball, or he's likely to end up with another injury that will sideline him for a good part of this season. We'll get a better idea of how JP will fare against the cream of the crop when Atlanta comes to town on the 25th.

I see the Bills going 10-6 at best, but more likely they'll be either 8-8 or 9-7 and once again missing out on the Wild Card.

I dated the girlfriend of an NFL offensive lineman. Ofcourse she didn't tell me that was her bf till after. *sigh* but she was worth it until someone saw us together and he threated to kill me. frown I had to break it off. Man she was hot...lebanese background.

Oh um sorry. TAMPA IS GOING TO KICK BUFFALO'S TAIL THIS WEEKEND!!! I will be there shirtless with red paint and a pirate hat! Ok, a t-shirt, khakis, and a baseball cap but I will be there!

Trash talk 'eh? I actually put the Tampa game in the "could go either way" pile when I came up with my incredibly vague season prediction for the Bills, but what the hell, I can play along. wink

What were the Sucks, 5-11 last year? Sad. How the mighty have fallen. I'll apologize in advance for Buffalo's defense totalling your new Cadillac. I hope do hope for your sake they have Lemon Laws in Florida.

Jorg-EM, Congrats on your impending nupitals. I want to wish both you and your future bride all the best! Now with that said, hopefully your future bride is a medical professional because the beating the Bills are gonna put on the Sucks this sunday will leave even the fans limping.

See, this is why I don't trash talk... shake Every time I do my team comes out and just makes me look like an idiot.

What a miserable display. mad

Ah well, your Bucs definitely deserved the win Jorg. You've got a keeper there in Cadillac Williams. It'll be interesting to watch him develop into a star in the years to come. Best of luck this season!
