So there is a small chance that I could be going to New York for the Big Apple Con in November.
Frankly, the idea of travalling to New York alone scares the pants off me. Does anyone have any suggestions for a safe and reasonably affordable place to stay?
The con is at Penn Plaza Pavillion, across from Madison Square Garden, if that helps.
Thanks for any and all input!

When we stayed in New York that’s the hotel we were in. It seems pretty central and right next to Penn St station its pretty easy to get to and from. Close enough to walk to Macy’s and the Empire State building. The hotel itself was OK. I though the room we were in was a little on the small side and some of the fittings had seen better days but it was clean and comfortable. The staff were helpful and we had no problems during our stay. Walking out was fine and, having just asked Gigglebot she said she feels she could have stayed there on her own without feeling threatened. Just stay on the main streets.
Hope you enjoy yourself at the con.

Sadly, I really can't think of anywhere to reccomend that would be cheap in Manhattan. Sorry . Its so expensive still! But Jorg is right, NYC isn't really that scary anymore. Especially where the Con is going to be near Penn Station and where all the hotels are. Its much nicer than in decades past. After all, I occassionally patrol the streets

We spent last Thanksgiving in NY. Stayed at the Sheraton, I think, in Weehawken. There was a water taxi to a Manhattan transit hub right on the hotel property.
There were other NJ locations with similar transit accommodations.
