Here's the first good pic of Eccleston and Piper (supposedly in costume) as the Doctor and his assistant (from www.darkhorizons.com).

Awww... I'd heard the rumour that Eddie Izzard was being considered for the spot - must have fallen through. Ah, well. I guess I'll have to rent that movie where he and Matt LeBlanc crossdress in WWII if I want him on ym screen... ^.^

If that's his costume, that would be a pretty poor effort. I guess the BBC has their own ideas, but I thought the Doctor was sort of a colorful character. That just looks like a generic plainclothes detective character to me.

Yeah, if that's The Doctor's wardrobe, it makes me wonder what they have in mind for his characterization.
And I wonder if the Dalek folks were miffed by the Dalek cameo in "Coupling"?

Or maybe it made them change their minds? According to the BBC, there has been an agreement reached and the Daleks will be featured in the new Dr. Who show. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/3535588.stm

I like the choice...handsome enough but you can still see a hint of madness in the eyes like he did in 28 Days Later.
Can someone remind me how many lives the doctor has and how many he has used already?
My fav companion was the girl that was also a Time Lord and changed midseason...think she was wiht Tom Baker Doctor Who

I think this will be Doctor # 9.
Hartnell Troughton Pertwee T. Baker Davison C. Baker McCoy McGann
I'm kind of surprised I remember all this. Dr. Who hasn't been on in Atlanta for at least 10 years or more.

And who says that the Hartnell Doctor was the original? Is he not supposed to be well over 400 years old - so you're not telling me that his first regeneration was only less than 40 years ago and he's had another 7 since then..... Or am I speaking pants? William Hartnell looked over 400 after all.

Well, when you get killed as often as he does.... Of course, when you do that much time travelling, you can physically age decades and then show up somewhere only six months after you started and get wiped out. (On that note, I see where the Dr. Who Discontinuity Guide is coming back into print. Cool.) There have been a few Who writers that have dropped hints that Hartnell wasn't the first, but these have generally been ignored. Evidently it set up a mini-tempest in Who fandom.

Actually, I seem to recall references that the Hartnell Doctor was about 200 years old... and that Davison was over 1000! Apparently, we've only seen snippets of each period.

Okay, somebody help me here because my Dr. Who memories are very dusty... Was there a story that either implied that the Master was in some way the 12.5 version of the Doctor, or did the Master somehow try to "steal" one of the Doctor's regenerations?

The blonde Romana (Baker's girlfriend?) became a little girl type, which kinda annoyed me. My favorite companion might be Sarah Jane, the reporter who started out with Pertwee then stayed with Baker. Interestingly enough, she started out kinda tough but ended up kinda devolving to a little girl as well (check out the big overalls in her last appearance). I think the Tom Baker Doctor just had that effect on women...

You may be thinking of the US TV movie, where the Master tried to steal the Doctor's body.

I don't know, because I don't think I'm thinking of that crap work from Eric Roberts or whoever it was. Was it maybe somehow tied into that big "Trial of a Time Lord" season long Colin Baker arc? I wish I had the free time to get into Dr. Who again, my dad and I used to watch it religiously.

I know what you mean, matlock - I don't remember the specifics, but I'm pretty sure there was a story in the show where the Master was near the end of his rope and tried to steal the rest of the Doctor's regenerations.

ok but here's where i'm still kinda fuzzy, how does Peter Cushing's doctor fit into the whole mythos? if it does. i know he did two movies as the doctor back in the 60's. is his adventures considered part of the Dr.Who cannon or not?

Didn't the Valeyard try the same thing? Stealing a Doctor's regenerations? Was this a common theme?

Not that I've found: The character was first portrayed by William Hartnell, who played him as an irascible, grandfatherly figure. When Hartnell left the series, the role was taken over by Patrick Troughton. To date, eight actors have played the Doctor, with perhaps the most enduring incarnation being the fourth, played by Tom Baker.
When the series begins, nothing is known of the Doctor at all, not even his name. In early episodes he is referred to as "Grandfather" by the character of Susan. In the very first story, 100,000 BC, two teachers from the Coal Hill School in London, Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton, become intrigued by one of their students, Susan Foreman, who exhibits high intelligence and advanced knowledge. Trailing her to a junkyard at 76 Totter's Lane, they see her enter what appears to be a police box. Following her inside, the two not only discover the police box's unusual properties but encounter an old man calling himself the Doctor, who subsequently whisks them away for an adventure in time and space.
In the first episode, Barbara addresses the Doctor as "Doctor Foreman," as the junkyard in which they find him bears the sign "I.M. Foreman". The Time Lord responds, "Eh? Doctor who?" Although referred to in the on-screen credits for nearly twenty years as "Doctor Who", the Doctor is never really referred to by that name, except in a tongue-in-cheek manner. The only exception has been a computer in the serial, The War Machines, which commanded that "Doctor Who is required."
In The Highlanders he adopts the alias "Doctor von Wer" (a German approximation of "Doctor Who"), and signs himself as "Dr. W" in The Underwater Menace. When pressed, he sometimes gives the name "Dr John Smith". On occasion he is referred to as "Theta Sigma", apparently a University nickname. He has also been mocked by his own people for adhering to such a "lowly" title as "Doctor".
In many spin-off comic strips, books, films and other media, the character is often called "Doctor Who" (or just "Dr. Who") as a matter of course, though this has declined in more recent years. From the first story through to Logopolis (the last story of the 18th season and also of the Tom Baker era), the lead character was listed as "Doctor Who". Starting from Peter Davison's first story, Castrovalva (the first story of the series' 19th season), the lead character is credited simply as "The Doctor". http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Dr_Who

Sorry I've been away so long...been vegging out on DVDs...Anyway, to answer some of the thread's questions (in as haphazard a manner as possible, of course): The 12.5 Doctor was the Valeyard, not the Master. His only appearance was in the 14-part Trial of a Time Lord story starring Colin Baker. He had cut some sort of dodgy deal with a corrupt group of Time Lords to get the Doctor put on trial and killed. It's theorized (and hinted at somewhat) that the corrupt Time Lords actually created the Valeyard to get rid of the Doctor. Interestingly, it was the Master who exposed the Valeyard's true nature to the Doctor. The Hartnell Doctor is the First Doctor. There is evidence in multiple stories to support this information - off the top of my head, "The Three Doctors (where the Hartnell Doctor is specifically referred to as the earliest incarnation), "Mawdryn Undead" (the Fifth Doctor admits that he has eight of his thirteen lives remaining), and "The Five Doctors" (the Fifth Doctor tells the Hartnell Doctor that there are now five incarnations running around). Where the confusion for the Pre-Hartnell Doctors comes in is during the Tom Baker story "The Brain of Morbius". The Doctor and Morbius (an evil Time Lord) have a mind battle, where they each try to force the other to regenerate backwards to their earliest form and beyond, which would kill them. Several faces not belonging to televised Doctors appear on screen (the faces actually belong to some of the production crew), and there is the slight indication that some of these were the Doctor instead of Morbius. This is as the production team intended, but such overwhelming evidence to the contrary usually discounts the "Morbius" Doctors from actually being Doctors. As for stealing the Doctor's lives...it's not that common, really. Apart from the Master in the "TV Movie" and the Valeyard in "Trial of a Time Lord", the only other example of Grand Theft Regeneration occurred during "Mawdryn Undead". Eight aliens had stolen the regenerative abilities of the Time Lords, but they kinda screwed up, and they mutate every time they regenerate. They needed to "steal" the Doctor's remaining regenerations in order to stabilize their own bodies and allow them to finally die. Romana II (Lalla Ward) was Tom Baker's wife for a time. The character's full name was Romanadvoratrelundar. Sorry to ramble, but it's my favorite show, you see...

Oh, missed one! What happened to the Doctors after they left the show? Well, most of them continued to act. The first three (Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee) are all dead. Tom Baker lives in France now, from what I understand, and tends to pop up from time to time in various things around the UK being progressively weirder than he was on the show. Davison, Colin Baker, McCoy, and McGann still make Doctor Who, after a fashion. They star in new Who audio dramas (akin to old time radio serials). The company responsible is called Big Finish, and they release one regular Who release every month, along with various "mini-series" of audios featuring popular characters or concepts from the show (such as Dalek Empire, Sarah Jane Smith, or the recent Gallifrey sets). Big Finish also does a series of 2000AD audios, mostly with Judge Dredd, but occasionally featuring other properties from the UK strip. Big Finish's website is here: http://www.doctorwho.co.uk/
