what would it have been? For me, I think it would be Judy Garland's performance at Carnegie Hall in 1967. A second for me would be Carlo Bergonzi in recital or playing in Tosca. Of course, I'd probably be dead by now if I were old enough to have gone to these concerts.

Handel's Messiah - the one where King George the whatever stood for the Hallelujah chorus. I suspect I might be disappointed, however - it's probably performed with a lot more oomph today.

The Beatles at the Cavern Club, The Rolling Stones at Reggie's Danceland in Excelsior MN in 1964 and any 1977 Clash or Sex Pistols gigs.

The Monterey Pop Festival.

If that's cheating, then I'll go with The Beatles in Hamburg. Or any early Elvis show with Scotty Moore and Bill Black.

The first performance of the "Prague" symphony by Mozart in Prague.

Any concert by Led Zeppelin when they were at the height of their powers (Song Remains the Same is, according to the band themselves, FAR from their best performance).

Rolling Stones, 1972 tour.

U2, Joshua Tree Tour. Yeah, I was there, but I'd like to go back again. "FUCK THE REVOLUTION!"

"The Beatles at the Cavern Club"

I know what you mean. I felt as though I'd actually come very close to this kind of experience, the 1st time I saw The Friggs at The Khyber Pass in Philly. It had the exact same kind of atmosphere & energy that I'd always read. It's no wonder I started going to bar shows on a regular basis shortly after that!

Of course, I'm embarrassed to say I MISSED The Kaisers when they played Upstairs At Nicks in Philly-- especially since I was THERE that night (but left early, as it was a work night and I was already starting to drop off). The Kaisers are a band from Scotland who replicate the look, feel, sound & attitude of the early Beatles so accurately you feel like you're in a time warp. (They do mostly original songs, too!) For a good sample, check out their debut album, SQUAREHEAD STOMP-- reportedly recorded in ONE DAY (just like PLEASE PLEASE ME).

I saw U2 in 1982 or 83 at 1st Avenue in Minneapolis, one of the best shows I've ever seen. I don't like Joshua Tree however.

I'd have liked to have been at the gig where the Velvet's played Black Angels Death Song twice and got fired. That was the night they were hired by Warhol to become the factory band...

I can't think of one particular performance, but I'd love to have been at CBGB's in its heyday.
