Some film critics have, though why the Oscar producers would listen to them (if they do) is beyond me.

The winners weren't all predictable, but nothing jumped out as blatantly "wrong" to me. I thought this would have been the year they got around to giving one to Scorcese, though I didn't think The Aviator had a shot at Best Film. It felt like Million Dollar Baby got it almost by default.

She was OK in two of the three songs, but she murdered "Vois sur ton chemin", from "The Choir". Too bad, it's such a wonderful song... (The movie is very good, too, I highly recommend it!). But yes, I agree, they really should get different people to sing the different songs.

It's funny, but I didn't even notice "Al otro lado del río" when I watched The Motorcycle Diaries, it left no impression on me at all. Antonio Banderas performed it well, though.

And deservedly so, box office winner or not.

Agreed. Best Animated Film is one of those awards that Oscar folks have been getting consistently "right" in my view. Of course, the category's only a few years old, so they haven't had much opportunity to screw things up.

Now, if they would just expand it to five nominees instead of three....[/b]
Is it limited to three? I thought the category was only done if there were a minimum of three movies in a given year but that it was treated like all others if there were enough films to nominate.

Did anyone else feel that the hype surrounding Chris Rock and "what's he gonna do?" and "is he going to be outrageous?" was kindof insulting? I know that to some degree it was meant to stir interest, but they made it seem like the man has no self-control, that he's can't differentiate between being on cable or in a club and being on national tv and the oscars - He knows this isn't the MTV awards. I mean, the man's not a child or an idiot. He doesn't have tourrets.

I amkinda disappointed that Vrigina Madsen didn't win for best supporting actress. Though I love Cate Blanchett, Madsens speech in Sideways was just soooooooo good. Just too good. Hopefully people in Hollywood will give her another chance becasue she is a terrffic actress.

I think, too, that the Animated Film category depends on how many movies are announced.

They've done well, I agree, tho I wish Millenium Actress got a nom last year, considering the quality. I'm pretty sure that got lost in bad marketing, tho.

Sigh unseen, I'm gonna go ahead and predict Howl's Moving Castle to win next year. I just don't see anything on the calendar that could beat Miyazaki.

At least she and two of her co-stars (Church and Giamatti) won the Independent Spirit Awards (Church was near tears, Giamatti was funny, saying that he wasn't particularly spirited and not at all independent, and Madsen brought her son up on stage with her). Payne also won for writing (I think, or maybe directing) and the film won best picture.

I'm with you on the Miyazaki. The man's a genius, and the folks voting in the animated film category know this. If it gets in theaters here by the deadline, it's in.

I agree Millenium Actress should have gotten a nom. I thought Tokyo Godfathers deserved one as well.

I'm hearing June 10, right now. Platform release, which tells me Disney's not getting it again.

A nom for Millenium Actress would've been extra nice because it was so atypical for the idea of what animation is... as a drama that needed to be done as animation, it challenged what the form could accomplish.

My only regret in the Animated category is the Lilo and Stitch came out the same year as Spirited Away. L&S was very Oscar worthy and if it came out a year later I would have cheered for that one instead.
