Apparently the planes were a safe distance appart and no warnings sounded either in the planes or air traffic control.

I reckon it's more a case of our brains mis-interpreting the picture, rather than the camera lying.

See, there's this thing called 'perspective', where big things far away look smaller than little things close up.

Just out of interest, who came up with the phrase the camera never lies?

As it obviously does, both unintentionally as above and sometimes deliberately to prove a point.

Not that I always believe the authorities, but you figure some passengers would have spilled the beans if there had truly been a close call. It does look pretty freaky, though.
