I agree-- a great episode. Like all the best ones of this series, the flashback scenes ended up informing the 'main' plot.
Was Desmond also the name of Walt's step-father? Or of someone else connected to one of the LOST? Shannon's boyfriend? Claire's? I swear we've heard that name in this series before, but I'm drawing blanks.
That last scene was a jawdropper...

Great start to a new season. Forget figuring out Lost, I'm still trying to figure out the second line of your post, RTVU.

Good episode, but I wasn't quite blown away.
Ultimately, they need to actually give some answers to the questions they pose instead of just answering questions with more questions. Not that they need to give it all away, but I'm sure they can answer some questions and enhance the plot without making us all feel like worms on a hook just waiting for an answer or two. If we don't get some sense of their master plan soon, I fear fans will tire of the bait & switch (they claimed to not want to repeat the mistakes of "Twin Peaks", but it remains to be seen whether they repeat them or not).

Nuclear power reactor, computers ... and no way to send a message to the outside world?
Beyond ludicrous. That's enough for me for another year.

i quite enjoyed the opener myself. WOW we see in side the hatch, with all its "state -of-the-art" (for 1960's) technology.
quarantine eh? i wonder why?
at least the "light in the hatch" mystery is solved. However if the hatch people can get modern highpowered halogen spotlights, why are their computers so old (looking)?

This felt like half an episode to me. I'm witholding judgement until after I see next week's episode.
I liked the song that played twice in this episode - "Make your own kind of music/Sing your own special song/Even if no one else sings along." It sounds like it's from the early 70s. Does anybody know what the title is and who sings it?

Beyond ludicrous. That's enough for me for another year. They just discovered it. How can you expect them to know all about it if they have been trapped on a supposdly deserted island this entire time -which has been about a month island time. They didn't even know about the hatch and what the contents where until they went down. Give the show some slack. Seriously, expecting the show to be realistic is expecting some lady with wings to show up at your door.

Mama Cass Elliot Make Your Own Kind of Music Nobody can tell ya There's only one song worth singing They may try and sell ya Cause it hangs them up To see someone like you
You gotta make your own kind of music Sing your own special song Make your own kind music Even if nobody else sings along
It can't be nowhere The loneliest kind of lonely It may be Just to do your thing is the hardest things to do
You gotta make your own kind of music Sing your own special song Make your own kind music Even if nobody else sings along
And if you will not take my hand Then I must be going, I'll understand
You gotta make your own kind of music Sing your own special song Make your own kind music Even if nobody else sings along
You gotta make your own kind of music Sing your own special song Make your own kind music Even if nobody else sings along
You gotta make your own kind of music Sing your own special song Make your own kind music Even if nobody else sings along
No no no no Even if nobody else sings along If nobody else sings along

As for the episode itself, I missed it. We were having some severe weather of our own in the Mini Apple last night, so my TV time was supplanted by weather bulletins.
So we know what's in the hatch? A nuclear powerplant from the 60's?
What about Michael and Sawyer and Jin?
p.s.- ML, Walt's stepfather was named Brian.
Just spouting off.

Things are okay my way. A few neighborhoods have some trees down and lost power, but as of this morning only one death associated with the storm.
The local ABC affiliate has a sister station here they use for re-broadcasts of things like this; if it's not rerun soon, I may take ya up on it.
Just spouting off.

I agree it felt like Part I of a two-part episode than a stand alone ep. I have this fear that the show could become really stupid based on what they found in the hatch, but I'm interested in where it goes...

[RTVU2] { Seriously, expecting the show to be realistic is expecting some lady with wings to show up at your door. } Why would I expect that? Especially when she's in the next bedroom, sleeping off too much Silverale from last night? I keep telling her, "Sis, have some fried okra from Newer New Orleans first, to absorb some of that alcohol!" She'll never learn.

Mama Cass' "Make Your Own Kind of Music"! Love that song! I first heard it in one of the many late-90s "gay coming of age" movies (can't remember which one) and fell in love with Mama Cass!

Since I've never seen this show, what is it about? I can't tell much from the name.

The survivors keep switching loyalties and forming their own agendas as they adapt to their new conditions. As the show goes on, it becomes obvious they're not alone AND there are weird forces at work on the island. Plus, we have flashbacks to everybody's lives before the crash.

Basically, a plane crashes on a mysterious island in the South Pacific. Miraculously, forty-eight people survive. They soon discover that they were a thousand miles off-course when they crashed, and have no way of sending a signal off the island to potential rescuers. And there's something in the jungle that kills people. And all sorts of other mysteries, such as the complex connections between the characters lives before the crash, and mysterious "others" who apparantly inhabit the island.
