Okay, I admit it. I really liked Physical, okay?
And boy did Bette Davis Eyes get on my nerves.
Loved 9 To 5! I remember listening to it on a portable tape player while swinging on the swings at the park.

I was keeping a weekly list of American Top 40 at the time, and was frustrated that the songs I liked charted low while ordinary ballads like "Lady" and "Endless Love" dominated the chart.
All in all, 1980-81 was a bland period in music. Disco had died (or was on its last legs), heavy metal was passe, and punk rock never caught on, so what passed for a major trend were country songs from Urban Cowboy. There were glimmerings of New Wave via the Pretenders ("Brass In Pocket"), Gary Numan ("Cars") and the Clash ("Train In Vain"), but we'd have to wait until 1982-83 when MTV really started its ascent for something exciting to happen.
The two lists aren't all bad, however. "Funky Town" was fun, and Billy Joel had one of the best hits of his career in "It's Still Rock & Roll to Me." Both that song and John Lennon's final number one, "(Just Like) Starting Over" sounded as if they came straight out of the '50s, an indication of music looking backwards. George Harrison deliberately looks backwards in "All Those Years Ago," a tribute to John, and Styx's "The Best of Times" offers its own nostalgia trip while being hopeful for the future. If music had to temporarily look back in order to remind itself what rock 'n' roll was all about, then I guess it was worthwhile.
But, looking over this list, I can't help but wish that "Love Stinks" by the J. Geils Band had been a bigger hit. (At least it's outliving most of these songs, thanks to the Swiffer commercials!)

I love about 70% of the songs on those lists. Lennon's final album was excellent. I'm glad it is represented. I'm a fan of anything and everything Blondie ever recorded. Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty together... brilliant. Upside Down is as solid a Diana Ross hit as you can get. Guilty is one of my favorite Striesand songs. She and Barry Gibb were meant to sing together.
Beauty's where you find it. Not just where you bump and grind it.
