Well folks went to the dentist today because i hadn't been in a few years and i'd figured i had better stop delaying the inevidable and just do it to at least get them cleaned,... well after the x-rays my dentist informed my that all four of my wisdom teeth are going to be needed to be taken out. the two bottom teeth had grown in all wrong and instead of pointing upward they are laying on the side and the top two are sort of over grown since they don't have the bottom two to connect to. (that's how she explained it) so have any of you other LW'ers had this happen to you? i'd like to know what to expect, i've heard it can be painful and all. fell free to elaborate on this.
****btw i have no cavities and my teeth are in generaly good condition, so i've managed to keep the cavity creeps at bay,....FOR NOW!!!!************** smile

Well, I haven't had my wisdom teeth out (in fact I've had the two upper wisdom come out when the other teeth had to be pulled)

I did have to have some bone chipped away to have a proper anchor for a bridge. They advised me that it might hurt & be sore for a couple of days, but it didn't really bother me. So, I guess it does depend upon your threashold of pain.

Luckily it is just your wisdom teeth.

When I was 21 I had exactly what you have. For this much dental action, and to have the least trouble, I went to an oral surgeon. He advised me that it was indeed best to have this resolved all at once and for good.

He gave me general anesthesia (into a vein) and took out all four teeth within two hours. The next thing I knew, I was being walked to the car as if I'd had a twelve-pack of beer.

Even with the anesthetic fully wearing off a couple hours later, it was only painful for the rest of that day. I had to irrigate the four holes in my head with home-made saline solution for about six weeks, but after that they fully closed up and everything was fine.

I've had my two bottom wisdom teeth removed (don't have any on the top), and it wasn't bad at all. The first one was removed by the dentist, just like a regular extraction. The second had to be done by an oral surgeon because it was very close to a nerve, required some stitches, etc. I opted for an intraveneous sedative, and don't remember a thing! The whole procedure took about 20 minutes. I needed some Tylenol 3 for a couple of days, but it was no where near the horrific experience I was expecting. Of course, I've also had 4 root canals, so I'm kind of a dental work veteran! The most annoying part for me was trying to keep food out of the new craters in my gums! But it's been about 3 months since I had the last one out and everything's fine.

WoW Grey, that's actually what my dentist suggested if it's that painful i'm not looking forward to it. she also suggested that i talk it over with my regular doctor about weither it's wise to get it done all at once or two at a time since i'm on blood thinners.

What with my Mother being a dentist I've got pretty much perfect teeth (it wouldn't really be a good thing if I didn't would it?) but when my wisdom teeth starting coming through she said to keep an eye on them. Luckily they've grown through fine and fit no trouble (although the top right one still isn't through properly yet).

That being said my mother tells me that often there isn't a need to have wisdom teeth taken out. The old 'there isn't enough room' excuse is generally held not to be true any more unless they're actually causing other teeth to become deformed. But the problem you have *is* one that means you need the teeth out. Grey is right though, go to a surgeon if you can (my mum is a qualified dental surgeon now as well so she actually does wisdom teeth removals fairly often but didn't do them until she passed an extra course) because while it's not that complex a procedure like any kind of surgery there are risks and it's best to safe than sorry. Done properly you'll most probs have some discomfort and a degree of pain but it shouldn't be too bad. No more than any other operation anyway.

The advice about the saline solution is also very good. When my teeth were coming through they were giving me gyp, but my mum told me the usual reason is just that you get bits of food stuck in the gum that's broken that you can't clean properly so it gets a bit infected, but a very warm (as hot as you can cope with really) mix of water and salt (again, as much salt as you can stand) used as a mouthwash is the best way of treating it and it really does work. Don't swallow though because it will make you *very* sick.

i just had a root canal yesterday and they are concerned that my wisdom tooth may be too close to my potential crown. if it come sout i will lose my crown...so im debating wether to have it pulled before i get my crown over my root canal. the root canal was less painful and elaborate than i thought. i went to an endodontics guy not a regular dentist so that may have helped. but it was just like a fancy filling. and the resultant vicadin is great for sleeping.

but i am trying not to get this wisdom tooth pulled. hopefully it will be ok, i dont want to have oral surgery just to take care of something that *may* happen. besides if my crown only last 10 years (or whatever) its not worth it to me if getting my wisdom tooth out harms it at year 9 or year 15 or never.

so i have to see my rgular dentist hopefully he will agree with me.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled, although I only had 2 done at a time. Had them done right at the dentist's office. No major pain involved. I actually had it done at lunchtime and then went back to work for the afternoon. Took a couple of Advil or something, but that was it. I had to be careful for a couple of days to give the holes a chance to heal over a little so as not to get "dry pockets". In fact, after one appointment, I was eating Wendy's hamburgers the next day smile

John, teeth and i don't have a great history. I had three front teeth as a boy. Yup, you read right, three. Then, my left canine (is that it? Its the vampire fang tooth) started to come in...before my baby tooth there fell out. I had to have the bottom one pulled for it to drop into place.

Then, when my wisdom teeth started to come in, they were causing problems with my chewing. So, i had four pulled in one day. Unfortunately for me, i was driving, so the doctor gave me some nerve blocking shots. I swear, if the needle wasn't nineteen feet long, it sure looked it. There is that initial crunch as the needle cuts through meat inside the mouth, and then a burning, but then the numbing starts to work.

Three of my wisdom teeth came out lickety split, but one decided to be a horse's ass and had to be split in two to be removed.

And my best friend when it comes to oral hygene has become hydrogen peroxide. I brushed as a child, but had soft teeth and several cavities. Now, i use HP and it helps, but i still have a bit of receeding gumline.

Treasure your teeth, and only remove if necessary.

I've had a teeth pulled recently and then got a permanent bridge. It sucks ass.

Listen kids. Don't brush your teeth once or twice a day. Brush atleast 3 times smile And use scope. And go to the dentist often.

I hadn't been since high school...and this happened to me. A span of 11 years without a dental visit. doh! I paid the price!

After you get 'em taken out, try not to suck. smile

But seriously, that's what will create dry sockets faster than anything else and while getting those lil' beasties pulled out will hurt and all.. you DON'T want to get a dry socket in there. Cause that'll hurt far, far more. Just treat your mouth like a china doll for a week or so and you'll be fine.

And enjoy the weight loss. laugh

well, went to the oral surgen today and had the left top and bottom wisdom teeth taken out, looks like i'll have to wait for the other two.
wasn't so bad at first took the laughing gas although i wasn't laughing, but when the novacane kicked in,....well i was like bill cosby with the whole my bottom lip thing and all and it was cool how the whole leftside of my face went numb.
the top tooth came out in seconds, but the bottom one gave them some real problems, my god i can still taste smell of the smoke from the drill as it went into my tooth.
so to make a long story short they got most of the tooth out but they had to leave the root in,
the doctor assured me that it wont cause any problems and such. now i'm in some discomfort & it only hurts when i laugh or swallow, and with all the soreness and gause in my mouth i sound like Dr.Zoidberg.hurray!!
so now i'm just taking care of myself and waiting for the pain to go away. that and with all the rain we've had in New York over the last 4 days should make for a really fun weekend.
