I think the main reason I didn't dig the episode was because of the ending. It looks like the Freighties are as disposable as the Tailies of Season Two. I'm really fearful that Miles and Lapidus won't survive to see next season either. But mostly, Daniel was my favorite character among all of those that have been introduced after Season Two, so it was sad for me, especially as it was telegraphed so obviously as the episode went on. So...does anyone think that was the impending death referenced and discussed starting here ? Personally, I don't think so. Though Daniel's fairly popular, I don't think his death would've been such water cooler fodder as one of the longer-tenured characters. So I still think someone else bites it in the Season Five finale.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's an even bigger death (Charlie-level is the description I've heard) death coming.

Agreed, another death is forthcoming, this one a major one.
All in all I thought it was a great episode even if most it was telegraphed (but at least we got it confirmed). I also really didn't like the ending though and how Faraday just bought it, mainly for the reasons Lardy mentions.

One quick comment about tonight's ep: things sure got awkward there on the sub, didn't they? Ouch!

This was a really great episode, IMO. I felt like I had a lot to talk about last night but work has been too distracting today.
I *love* how Locke has switched it up on Ben and Richard and now has them guessing after 4+ seasons of the opposite.
I *love* Jack's continual shift towards being more like Locke.
Sayid had a great moment when he showed up. Locke always has great moments, this episode more than ever.
I thought of something about the Others, after Locke guessed (possibly rightly) that Ben has never seen Jacob. (1) Richard appeared to be there leader in 1954 and prior. (2) It almost seems like Charles and Eloise were co-leaders, and in a way, almost canceling each other. Perhaps Richard encouraged this? Re: Richard still maintained his power. (3) *If* Ben never talked to Jacob, Richard might have kown or suspected; RE: Richard essentially still maintains that role of 'leader' if he has some means to communicate with Jacob. Kind of a big stretch, I know.
But my point is we all kind of know Richard is one of the central controlling forces of the Others. But perhaps we haven't realized how overt that is? And now here comes Locke, the first one who can *really* take that power away from him. Especially since he can talk to the island and the Monster is on his side and he can't be killed.
All that aside, every actor on this show just knocks it out of the park. The Kate / Jack /Sayid moment was really dynamic, filled with tension and unsaid emotion. And the Miles & Dr. Change moments were surprisingly touching. So was Locke's taking a moment every so often to reassure Sun.

I've been wondering about Sayid since he ran off. Good to know he's back and side by side with Jack. The buddy/buddy relationship these two have had has been far more interesting than the love polygon.
Speaking of that... the submarine ride got real fascinating real fast. I can't imagine Sawyer as one to continually long for Kate, so I'm sure that's over. But Juliet obviously has her doubts and they may just eat her up.
Hurley's comment about Sawyer always having a plan... didn't Jack use to be the leader of this group? Things have shifted, and not just from the viewers' POV.
Just spouting off.

Sayid's suddenly showing up where Jack/Kate/the Others were was actually the one moment of the episode that didn't quite work for me. I did like the idea that Dharmaville was built over the Others tunnels (which also explains the entrance to the tunnel's in Ben's house that he uses to summon Smoky), though I wonder why the Other let them build it there in the first place.

It also explains how Richard so easily entered the Dharma camp that time. They can basically come and go at their will I bet.

Here's something I just thought of:
Is there a connection between the Latin phrases on the blast door map and the fact that the Others speak Latin?

The clip for the finale seemed to suggest that Sawyer and the girls won't be leaving the island after all unless I misinterpreted the images flying by. Maybe the sub's called back for some reason? And why was there nothing shown about knocking the sub passengers out for their journey back to civilzation? One could argue that this only became necessary after conditions created by The Incident, but I'm pretty sure this practice was referred to when Jack, Hurley and Kate were integrated by Sawyer. I always assumed this had something to do with keeping the passengers from developing the sickness, or was it just for secrecy?

I wondered about the lack of knocking out as well. Maybe it's only done on the way *to* the island?

Originally posted by THE LABRADORIAN: good point, but i am not sure of the connection. It doesn't really make any sense. But it is odd that the point was made about Others speaking Latin, and also odd that there were numerous Latin phrases on the blast door, so it seems to suggest they are connected. But since Radzinsky apparently inscribed the door, it's hard to understand how that could be the case.

If we're going along that line of thinking, and since speculation is the life blood of message baords, then I'd say: maybe who Kalvin thought was Radzinsky actually was not? (Unlikely I know. But if it happens, I'm totally claiming myself the coolest Lost fan on Legion World. Which means out of the 8 of us, I rock )

Possibly the best cliffhanger of the series... though I guessed the contents of the box long before the reveal.

It sank in this morning that the finale was really all about choice. That was Jacob's point in most all of his appearances. That was the point of Daniel's and Jack's plan. I loved Jacob's line about that "it only ends once, everything before counts as progress."

Great stuff in these comments (NOT the actual discussion by paid vacuous Washington Posties) about the anti-Jacob, and the possibility that he is the smoke monster and all the dead people seen on the island. If so, then Locke and Ben have been manipulated by evil all this time.
