I took Ben's comment to be strongly implying that the Whispers were a sign that the Others were nearby. Which certainly fits with Rousseau's original claim that she had heard the Others whispering.

Last night's episode was pretty cool. Miles's parentage was no real surprise... yet another character with "father issues". Maybe the most interesting thing was the revelation that Bram (and thus Ilana) are not working for Widmore, but for some "third force" (Dharma remnants?).
Anyway, lots of cool little moments. I especially liked the "My super-power is better than yours" discussion.

Yeah, last night was very good because it (A) slowed down the pace, (B) gave us a focus on Miles which we haven't had before and (C) gave us a lot of little tidbits.
The Bram part was the most notable WTF moment which now gives us further insight into one of the biggest remaining mysteries of the island. A third force exists, likely the Others longtime enemies. Maybe some connection to the Ancients of the island? That would be very cool. It appears Widmore and Ben's longtime rivalry would be to decide who should lead the Others against this group. I wonder how Eloise Hawking plays in.
Mile's father was telegraphed but still very cool nonetheless. The actor playing Pierre Chang did a good job at subtly showing he's nothing like the jerk Miles pictured him as, even though he still has that chip on his shoulder. Plus, the Hurley/Miles interactions this season are shaping up to be the best of the season thus far.
Its also interesting to note the construction at the Orchid station. I would think they knocked down the ancient well and built the Dharma base right on top of the wheel room.
See how quickly Juliet could lie to Roger's face about Ben's disappearance? I'm telling you...she can't be trusted. Roger Linus having this much screen time this season is surprising but not unwelcome. He’s actually a lot more sympathetic. Meanwhile, Horace Goodspeed is appearing much sneakier and manipulative than I would have previously thought. I feel less and less bad for the Dharma Initiative that the Hostiles wiped them out.
Jack, Kate and Sawyer all had quick good scenes. This is good—don’t overdo it, but keep them having at least a good scene each an episode.
Whats really cool, even though its not surprising, is the creation of the Hatch/Swan station over what is obviously the Jughead/atomic bomb. The Hatch was so vitally important and then when it left at the close of Season Two it was almost unmentioned again for two whole seasons. Now we see why it was built, how building it in the Hostiles territory will help re-spark the Hostiles/Dharma war, and how that will lead to the “incident” which leads to the button having to be pushed. I’m especially interested in how this plays into the time-travel and if Faraday is important to this story.
Faraday’s return isn’t all that dramatic but its cool to see him back. The big “Where has he been?” question will linger.
And oh, how awesome is it that Hurley is rewriting the ending to "Empire Strkes Back"? Not only did it provide good commentary relevant to the episode, it was just plain awesome.

Yes but as we know George Lucas doesnt take hurley's script, but i was confused, he wrote Empire not Return, so why all the talk of Ewoks? I believe the "third" group are the original inhabitants of the island, trying to get back, Richard is one of them. Thats why they ask what lies in the shadow of the statue, only the originals would know the answer.

I think Hurley was implying that if Lucas followed Hurley's script rather than his own, there would be no Jedi, and thus, no Ewoks.
One other thing I remember--we now know once and for all that it was indeed Widmore who arranged the fake Oceanic 6 full of bodies to be found. Up until now we'd been told that but I always thought there was enough "is he telling the truth?" going on where maybe it was Ben after all. But now that question is laid to rest. So these last two episodes have gone a long way to show/remind us Widmore is certainly as dangerous and deceptive as Ben.
And lastly, it was noted quite prominantly that Hurley and Miles abilities do not work the same way. We know for sure that Miles can talk to the dead. Perhaps Hurley's ability is different because he actually *can't* talk to the dead, and thats what this scene is telling us. Perhaps Hurley is talking to (A) the Island, or (B) the Monster appearing in the form of those who died on the island? Something else else to consider, otherwise why would they go at length to show Hurley and Miles do not have the same ability.

All we know is that one of Widmore's agents was carrying a file with information about the faking of the crash. It could be that he was killed by the Others and that this is the same file that Tom showed to Michael, or it could have been that dead guy was delivering to Widmore evidence about who *really* staged the fake crash (e.g. Ben, as Widmore claimed) and that he was killed for this.

Hm, good point Eryk.
rogue, you're right, that is still an option too. I really don't think they'd go down that road simply because fan dissapointment would be immense, but its still a definite option.

While I enjoyed the episodes for all these reasons, I am left skeptical that Miles could live on the island for 3 years, with his father and mother and not reveal himself to them. My relationship with my own parents is far from ideal, but in the same circumstances, I don't think I could totally avoid them in such close quarters for 3 years.
...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

Good, the Rangers and Caps are playing again Wednesday and taping Lost to watch the next day isn't as fun.

I wonder, fellow Losties...if given a choice would you have preferred this season presented they way it is--with two-hour premiere and two-hour finale finale and two weeks with no new episodes--or would you have preferred 17 weeks with consecutive new one-hour episodes? Frankly, I'd have preferred the latter choice! Sure sucks to have a recap episode this week and that repeat a few weeks ago!

Seeing the recap episode, I had a thought which I'm not sure was addressed on the show:
Did anyone explain the discrepency between the Oceanic 6 being alive and the bodies that were found in the fake plane crash? I imagine *someone* should've noticed the numbers added up to too many bodies in the plane or that the Six's seats had bodies in them or something...
It was great seeing a Miles episode last week. The lack of one made me think he was surely dead meat, and while I still think he's probably going to die, he now has an arc that needs to be explored or resolved before he bites it. I still think he's there to fulfill a specific function to the story with his powers and once he's done it, he's going to be expendable.

I didn't get that Bram was necessarily a third faction vying for the island. It's possible sure, but all we know about him is he's opposed to Widemore finding the island. That could ally him with the Others, an extension of Eloise's assignment. As for the Ancients, I think Richard and his current Others (circa 1950's to current) are descendants of a sort- inheritors might be a better term. As for Juliet- I do think she's still got some backstory we don't know. But her lie to Roger seemed weak to me, considering how long she had to work on one. It wasn't so much she was good at it, rather she didn't bother to try. Still, that woman has a secret or two left in her. And Naomi's comment to Miles that there are a number of "dead people residing" on the island...
Just spouting off.

So it may be settled after all. Of course one simple surprise scene can totally render that false.

Yeah, I think it's pretty much confirmed now that Widmore did indeed plant the fake plane. Usually if the narrator says something, that means it's so.

Well, we've known for awhile that there were people in the regular world helping Ben -- the gal from the butcher shop where they stashed Locke's corpse. So, I think Ben has his own faction beyond himself and any of the Lostie survivors he dupes. Eloise is a total mystery to me. Her appearance in the Desmond episode and the more recent one suggests she has some higher, Archon-like status. I think the "shadow of the statue" bunch has to be new faction since Benjamin clearly doesn't know about them, or he would have recognized them on the plane and after the crash, right? Or is he just being really sneaky?

Okay I'm not as thrilled about this episode as I have been with others this season. More than anything this seemed to be a connect the dots story. It's Daniel's turn to get the spotlight.
We see his childhood growing up, his mother pushing him to study physics, and his connection to Widemore and Eloise Hawking. Too, we learn where he's been for the 3 year gap, and how it ties in to the season's opening.
Almost nothing new revealed here, and the emotional shocker at the end was telelgraphed long before it happened. Daniel hasn't really grabbed me as a character, and his loud whispering has always annoyed me.
Just spouting off.

Yeah, I thought this episode was a bit weak. Honestly I was expecting something much more dramatic from Daniel as a character. With Charlotte's death earlier in the season, it really seems like the potential of the freighter characters has largely been wasted. Which is kind of a shame since they were probably the most compelling group of characters introduced since the originals (unless you count Desmond/Penny).

I almost don't have the energy now to watch the next episode to see Jack try and make everything not happen. It seems just another "Jack doing the wrong thing" and I want to see Jack starting to do the right thing.

The twist ending that I was really afraid of was that they would show Desmond recovering, and then Daniel would do something in the past that would change things, thus causing Desmond to not recover.
