I kind of spit at Alpert's line about lil Ben "losing his innocence." Just WHAT are they doing in that Temple?!?!?

and Charles Whidmore is still on the island in 1978 or whaterver year it is, going by Richards statement that he didnt care what Charles thought.

There was a lot of nice character stuff in this episode. I like the fact that both Jack and Kate have "grown" in important ways, but ways that completely alter the basis of their relationship. I really like the idea of Jack kind of becoming Locke. And we see Kate undergoing growth as well. It's interesting that the first thing she does after giving Aaron up (after acknowledging that the reason she kept him was because she "needed" him) was to go sleep with Jack.
I'm wondering about the consequences of Kate having told at least two people off island about the Lie.

The Jack becoming like Locke growth is really awesome to watch. I'm so looking forward to them meeting up one more time--they always have incredible scenes.
It also eases the final transition to Kate and Sawyer being together, since they are growing less and less compatible as a couple like EDE says (and more like friends and trusted partners even when they have differences). I honestly can't see Sawyer and Kate not together anymore and would be surprised is lot of people didn't agree with me.

I like Sawyer and Juliet together, personally. I know you (Cobalt) think Juliet is a double-agent or something, but I like those two as a couple. It just seems more grown up and mature than Sawyer and Kate ever did. Yes, Juliet's expendable, but I'm holding out hope for her. Of course, I also liked how the scene with Juliet and Jack recalled their own chemistry from Season Three.
I guess, though, if I had my druthers Sawyer would be with Juliet and Jack with Kate. The brief scenes we had between Jack and Kate as lovers and parents to Aaron before Jack went 'round the bend, I thought were pretty nice. Maybe it worked better for me because Jack and Kate smouldered a lot longer before actually consummating anything? Dunno. (I wonder if Kate ever had words with the cop she married sometime during the three years off-island?)
I also like how Kate and Cassidy resumed their friendship after that rocky first scene. I really liked Cassidy's character in her previous appearances and was glad to see her again. This was one of the few cases where characters have had their intertwining relationships to each other exposed (with both of their connections to Sawyer) for them to realize. I wonder if there's a deleted scene where Kate realizes before she visits that the mother of Sawyer's baby and her past acquaintance were the same person and what her reaction was. The only previous examples I can remember offhand are when Jack learns Claire's his sister and when Sawyer and Locke see their mutual connection with Cooper. Lost is littered with those kinds of connections!

Lab, I believe its shown in Season 2 (first Kate episode) when Kate seems to have found happiness at last but ultimately has to leave her husband (even drugging him to sleep first) and go back on the run.
The actress who plays Cassidy is great. She played an excellent roll on the show Deadwood and is extremely attractive there.

I meant she was married in the past before the crash to a cop played by Firefly's Nathan Fillion. I was wondering if the two ever interacted after she returned with the Oceanic Six.

My "Why didn't Sun disappear with the other Oceanic 6" theory:
Locke and Ben stayed in the present. They were both in the wheel-room. Locke had Jin's ring in the wheel-room. Sun had Jin's ring on the Lajira flight. She stayed behind because of the ring.
Well, that's the best I could come up with...

That makes sense.
I suppose the other possibility is that Sun has some sort of connection to the Others similar to Ben and Locke's...

I think the Others, Locke, Christian, and now Sun have died. They haven't passed on because their souls have become the Smoke Monster.
I'm really starting to think Richard and his people were the crew of the Black Rock, and they died when it shipwrecked there. The Others can't reproduce because they don't have souls anymore.
Just spouting off.

Further difference between Sun and the rest of the 06: Sun was the only one that Locke didn't visit before his death. Not sure why that would be relevant, however.

I think's it obvious that Alex was the smoke monster.
The interesting question is whether Locke is the monster. Notice how he disappears right before the monster shows up and reappears right after Alex disappears. And the possible clue when Ben thought the monster was coming out of the jungle and Locke suddenly comes out.
I think it's a red herring... but I think we're defintely supposed to be asking the question right now.

Yeah, thats what I thought. I've been meaning to post all day but I've had to hold back trying to scream at some at work today so I haven't been in the mood.
Last night was a great episode with lots of really great / important scenes.
- Some real info and scenes of the Others! Widmore over the decades! Ben over the decades! Ben taking Alex (finally shown!!). Ethan as a boy Other--so there are/were other Others besides Richard that were original members of the group!
- More Temple / hieroglyphics awesomeness! Thats probably my favorite mystery on the island. Then that women who most of us probably can't wait to be killed saying "it lies in the shadow of the statue"...really cool scene! So the bait & switch was with Ceaser, who a lot of us may have assumed worked for Widmore, when it may actually be the girl (who I ruled out after I learned she was after Sayid, thinking that was the major part of her story). At least, I think they may work for Widmore.
- More info and coolness on the Monster!
- Locke being all around awesome as always, but with the added "its weird for me too" scene, which I felt was highly necessary to remind viewers (and Sun) that Locke is still someone we can empahtize with and understand his POV, even if he has kind of transitioned to a higher level character on the show.
- Des & Penny...man oh man oh man. Stop reading if you don't want spoilers. But wow . . . . . . I feel a lot better. I turned to my wife and said "I've been dreading this for 45 minutes", and then was so glad it didn't work out for Ben. Best part of that scene: "please don't hurt my son", bringing the episode full circle to the opening moments with Danielle and baby Alex, and the usually sneaky/phony Ben showing some real emotional resonance (all done with facial expressions very well by the excellent actor, as usual).
Really a lot going on in this episode. Even the quiet looks Richard, Widmore and Ben all give each other were so telling.
And of course, the hierogplyphics in the perimeter of the Temple shed some more light on the statue. I wonder whats in the shadow of the statue then--the Temple? Or is that too easy? Should be interesting to see how the statue eventaully fell in the far past--related to the setting off of the Jughead perhaps?

I have to admit that I love Desmond more than ever after last night! So briefly, and yet he kicked ass so much!
Incidentally, I wouldn't rule out Caesar being an operative for... someone.

I was really dreading what might happen. The love story between Des & Penny is one of my favorite parts of the show. He's definitely my favorite besides Locke, and I loved seeing him give Ben a quick beating.

I will sound like a sadist, but truly ENJOYED the shot of Ben underwater, blood billowing out of his nose. It was well done, technically, but I also enjoyed it just for the pain and indignity that the character suffered. Does that make me bad?

Um...I guess I'm the only one who was afraid that after Ben fell in the water, he might have found the gun and had another go at it? Sorry...I'm probably imagining a next scene that never happened, but hopefully Des, Penny and Charlie took off in their boat before anything like that could happen. I just kept going back to Ben telling Sun to tell Desmond he's sorry if she ever gets off the island.

The episode had so much that I forgot to mention another interesting thing. Ben references the whispers to Danielle--I believe the first time anyone has talked about the whispers since like season two, and the first time a non-crash survivor wasn't just referring to how weird they were. Hopefully we'll finally get some insight to those! I know many of us thought it was perhaps the Losties traveling backwards through time and talking but that seems unlikely now. More and more it feels like its related to (A) the monster (since so much tied in to it anyway this episode), (B) Dead people on the island (which might be the monter anyway) or (C) something we haven't figured out yet relating to the ancient people on the island. Or I guess it could just be the Others.
