You do realize that when your son grows up to wield said power, you'll ultimately play an important role in his eventual storyline. And being his father...you're role will be very much designed to further the plot than further your own character Once the eventual pictures of the statue start coming up online, if someone sees one, can they repost it here? If it was Egyptian that would be fascinating. It could be something similar, of course, using the notion that all ancient, ANCIENT cultures have beliefs stemming from the same basic principles.

Well the exit point for the island's teleportation system is Tunisia. It's not exactly Egypt, but there is a regional connection at least.
Oooo we've been hoodwinked. This is just the latest version of Stargate- Islandgate!
Just spouting off.

OK, here we go. The statue really does look very Eygptian, and carries two ankhs, or "cross of life" in each hand. You all probably know this alreayd, but the ankh is an immortality and fertility symbol, and was the same thing on the necklace around Paul's neck in the last episode that Horace found.

Did I hear Richard right? He addressed Horace as "Mr. Goodspeed."
And anyone else think Paul's last name is Jacob?

More on the statue...
Since the statue could be either Horus or Anubis, if it indeed Egyptian, perhaps the creators intentionally only showed us his back, to keep us guessing. The reasoning is, once we know which one it is, we'd be able to probably determine which period of this version of Egyptian deities come from (The Old Kingdome vs. the Middle Kingdom). I'm not an expert on Eygptian mythology, but I believe that as the long history of Egypt moved forward, various Deities were changed (retconned even). So be keeping us in the dark, we can't quite pinpoint it yet...

And anyone else think Paul's last name is Jacob? We already knew Horace's last name was Goodspeed from his earlier appearances. Presumably this is before he built the cabin. Odds are Jacob is the baby.

All the depictions I've seen of Anubis (and I googled a few more just now) show him with much longer ears. Granted, it's artistic license, but he's consistently a long-eared jackal head.

[/b]That's presuming Jacob stays on a linear timeline. There's a pretty good chance, given the nature of the cabin that Jacob exists outside of time. They are actually in 1974 (1977 after the Three years later), meaning they're 30 years in the past. This also means young Ben Linus should be arriving on the island any time now.

All descriptions I've read says Ben arrives "in the early - mid 1970's". Given, none of that is canon from the show. So what I'd wonder is if he somehow arrived already in between 1974-1977? Its impossible to say, but I'm definitely interested in how it all lines up.
When Ben meets Richard in the forest, Richard has long hair, its after 1974 when we see him with Sawyer.
I bet we might see one of our peeps in 1977 see a young Ben and have a 'holy shit' moment.

Cobie -- I've felt like a furtherance of my son's plot since the moment the OB yanked him outta my wife's abdomen. And after a few years of adjustment, I can honestly say that's just fine with me, especially since I've had to deal all my life with a father who cares only about his own plot!
I must confess that besides the statue I really didn't connect any of the other Egypt references in the episode. Good thing I have you guys to do that for me. It's a very good call that the statue is holding ankhs and the connection to Paul. And Horace/Horus -- very interesting. Especially since Horus is the son of Osiris, the ultimate vanquisher of Set (chaos), the motive power behind the sun (and thus the pasasge of time), and the real hero/king deity of the Egyptian pantheon -- the one god that bridges between the divine and the temporal through the pharaohs. Casting a Dharma initiative leader in that archetype makes me think more highly of the Initiative than I had before.
Just to remind ourselves, too, Osiris is the Egyptian god of the dead, but was the original king of the gods, and represents cyclical flooding of the Nile that makes life in Egypt possible. That cycle of life/leadership/sacrifice/death/rebirth is certainly prominent already in the show.
What's the significance of the Goodspeed name, anyway, and the connection of Horace, Paul and the baby to Jacob? I know Horace built the cabin, but beyond that?
...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

Well Horace said he was building the cabin "for the Missus", which presumably means he moves Amy there (with the baby). We also know he doesn't go himself because he dies in the Purge and is thrown into the mass grave where Locke finds his body (with the map).

Just mad rambling of an unstable mind…
Locke died, but he’s alive again. Christian was dead, but not so much now. We all assume Claire has died, but she’s been seen with Christian. I think Richard and his original people have all died, but are no longer dead. (Sort of a tweak to the island-as-Purgatory theory) Jacob has to be tied into this some how.
The brief appearance Jacob made, he seemed older than Ben, so I don’t imagine Horace’s son is Jacob. I would think Paul (or another adult from the 70's) could fit the apparent age. And the constant reference to Paul without his last name seemed odd to me. The ankh around his throat ties in with the statue of Anubis (?) we saw- both being tied to life and afterlife. The island is sort of an in-between for life and death- that’s what makes it difficult for life to be born on the island. ‘Course, last night’s ep pretty much ends that line of thinking.
I can’t understand why Richard would feel taking Paul’s body would be justice for his killed men, unless he had plans for the body.
Just spouting off.

i cant see us seeing a young ben running around, unless i am a very poor judge of age rachel appears about 15 to maybe 20 years younger then ben. When i say a young ben, i mean a child, i do believe we may see a late teenaged ben or very early 20's ben. and CJ I agree, richard would be taking paul's body for plans. What plans they are, time will tell.

Originally posted by THE LABRADORIAN: I'm sorry, i meant Charlotte not Rachel, sorry for the confusion. Ah, OK. Charlotte is a tricky one mostly because Ben specifically says when he reads her dossier from memory she was born in '79. So either the girl Faraday sees isn't Charlotte, or Ben's info is wrong. Given that her Mom left the island and started a new life, she may have falsified Charlotte's birth records, but ten years is a pretty big difference.

i agree there is also the possibility of time moving a little faster on the outside world, so when charlotte returned to the mainland, she had to lie to make up for the fact that her daughter and herslf had not really aged since leaving the island. If that makes any sense. But i get confused, times moves differently on the island but yet people get older on the island. They have been on the island for a 100 days or so, yet when the freighter arrives no one says, my god 1 year has gone by or look at the date, is it because not much time has gone by?

Time passes at the same rate on the island as it passes in the outside world. However, there are time disortions associated with entering/leaving the island, which could very well explain the discrepancy in Charlotte's age.

WARNING...some may feel the info below is "spoilery" of upcoming episodes, though it offers no specific spoiler..... . . . . . . . . . Okay, so I read an article a few days ago (sorry no link--can't find the article, now) which said an actor on the show had just learned his or her character was slated to die this season. The article said the character was "major" and "beloved" by fans. It stated that the person dying is one of the headliners, as opposed to one of the frequent guest stars (though there was nothing said to rule out any of them dying either) And apparently, contrary to other rumors that had been bandied about, the character is NOT Kate. And the article said it would occur some time before the end of this season. I'm betting on the finale.
The impression I get is that the character is one of those who have been around since Season One or so as opposed to a Ben, Juliet or Daniel. So we're likely looking at Jack, Locke, Sawyer, Sun, Jin, Sayid, Hurley or possibly Desmond if the Kate exemption is correct. IMO, this would be our first major earth-shattering death since Charlie...though you could certainly make an argument for Michael last season (I find it hard to count Locke's "death").
Anyhow, I didn't search TOO hard for the article because I was afraid to stumble on one that spoils everything. I really don't want to know who it is (or any other specific spoilers) before I see the episodes.
The more I think about the wording of the article though, two candidates really leapt to mind. Either one would be a painful loss if I'm right.
Speculation?
Still "Lardy" to my friends!

Based on your criteria, I'd have to say it's
Click Here For A SpoilerSawyer. His character arc is pretty much done other than the new love "quadrangle". His revenge issue is done with, he's become a "good" guy and I really just don't see an arc for him. Jack still has to overcome his faith issues, John has his ongoing dilemas, Hurley needs to deal with his survivor's guilt issues, Sayid needs to deal with the consequences of his actions and Sun & Jin have got their personal stuff to work out. If it's not Sawyer, Hurley's the next one the list.

I think your main theory is wrong, Rouge. I think Sawyer's untouchable. I'm also pretty sure the producers have said he's in the last scene of the series as they've figured it. Otherwise, I think the Trinity are there for the duration (the Trinity being Jack, Sawyer, Kate & Locke--yeah, I know ), at least until the series finale when all bets are off. I agree with the Hurley theory, though. I think he fits the "beloved" tag more than just about anyone, and he's certainly been seeing a lot of dead people recently. My money's on Hurley. I think the only other one about as beloved would be Desmond. By your criteria, he hasn't got much left to do characterwise, except, perhaps, get revenge on Ben. He's my favorite character, so I hope not.
Still "Lardy" to my friends!

Click Here For A SpoilerI've heard this too, and I really wish it wasn't true. I don't want anyone else to bite it! Still, I think Lardy is right that all three in the Trinity are safe until the very end. I also think Locke is already dead but will be a major character until the finale. So, I really think it is Sayid. The minute I learned Nadia really died, I knew Sayid would not survive the show. I just figured it'd happen either at the end of the series or the Season Finale of Season 5. Which is too bad...but if there was one character who above all others seems to be *the* character for a heroic death, its him.
I don't think its Hurley...I think he'd be the type of character to live through the series. But I could be wrong.
Desmond is as likely as Sayid. I almost wish he and Penny never showed up again after the finale last season. But it just feels like something awful is going to happen to them, or already happened. He's my second favorite character after Locke so I hope not. But I don't want Sayid to die either.
Oh, and Juliet's arc is essentially done now too so I expect her to die sooner or later. And suddenly I started to have this weird sense that maybe she's still an Other spy after all this time. I can't really say why.
