But only after several humorous attempts to get rid of the mouse.

We had a mouse at the conference; the registration/display room was near the kitchen. the organizer freaked; we had to move all the tables out, and me and the hotel workers chased the little critter around.

Ironically, it got stuck in a little tent-shaped sticky mouse trap; one of the hotel guys stepped on it.

Finally! Today we caught one of the little devils in a humane trap. Antiquated Computers Lad is relocating him right now to a golf course several blocks away, where it will hopefully make a happy new home. One down...

I have this image of the gopher from Caddyshack right now, dancing in the hole to Kenny Loggins.

Got two in the last month...one ina glue trap, one found dead, I'd assume from poison we put out, but no way to know for sure.

I feel a little bad killing them, but my house is my territory. If I was mouse-sized and invaded their hole, they'd do the same to me.

The great mouse saga continues! Clearly they have bred at least once (shudder) because we cannot seem to get rid of them!

I started with humane traps, but after two months (plenty of time for breeding) we caught only one. When they started destroying the things I loved, I switched to lethal traps. Caught four more. But still, they seem to be everywhere. Every day I have to re-sanitize everything on my kitchen counter. They even got in a drawer and ate a packet of floral preservative! So I went out and bought a dozen of the inexpensive wooden snap traps. The little bastards have managed to take the bait off of them a half dozen times without setting off the traps. Last night they tripped three traps without getting caught.

Then this afternoon I found one dead, caught by no more than his lips. As much as I've grown to despise them, I feel so bad knowing he must have died slowly. Ugh, I feel sick.

Poor little mouse! Maybe he was instantly shocked to death. Just remember it's take-no-prisoners war. Reports of clever, trap-evading mice from you and Quis - perhaps some super-villain is experimenting?

But Mousie, thou art no thy lane,
In proving foresight may be vain;
The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men
Gang aft agley,
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promis'd joy!

Once the mice come they come and they are hard to get rid of. And those little suckers can fit into some tight places too.

We caught one on a glue trap about 2 weeks ago and that might be it this year I hope. We had a nice little mousy family last year. The glue traps aren't pleasant but they've always worked ok for us, even though I've had to ease a few of their journeys to mouse heaven. Unless they're going to start kicking in on the mortgage and groceries that's the way it's going to be.

The status report to date: killed 6, caught and released 2, one wounded and MIA.

I've decided hat the cheap wooden traps are not humane, or at least I haven't had any luck with them. This morning I found a pool of blood next to a tripped trap, but no mouse in sight. Poor thing has probably died somewhere where I'll never find him. Better to get the heavy plastic traps which seem to kill them quickly and cleanly.

This morning, while searching for the wounded, we found a baby mouse in the bottom of a large shopping bag, unable to climb out. Neither one of us could bring ourselves to kill it (well, I might have been able to if Shawn hadn't shown me how cute he was first), so we put him outside. He'll no doubt die of hypothermia, but Shawn assures me this is a relatively pleasant way to go. I suppose it's less traumatic than having your lips caught in a trap.

If any one else is having mouse problems, try the ultimate bait: an Eatmore candy bar! It's soft and sticky so you can mold it around the trigger and the mice can't sneak off with it. And they seem to love it. Got two more since my last post! (Will it never end??!!!) I feel like my whole life is revolving around rodent capture and corpse disposal. So gross.

Ah killing mice with your bare hands. Brings me back to my days in the lab as a student. I remember they used to have contests in the next lab to see who could sacrifice their batch the fastest.

"After sacrifice by cervical dislocation, the mouse livers were harvested and homogenized as described previously."

Could be worse.

She could get a visit from the Mouse Guard.

I'm fine with the Mouse Guard as long as they're willing to engage in a little civil war against the locals.

The body count is up to 18 and they're still everywhere. I can tell by their different sizes that they've had at least two litters. And the wily little bastards have somehow figured out how to even make off with sticky bait without getting caught. They've even been in the stove!

Sigh. Someday I can only hope this will be fodder for a really good story.

Glue traps are horrible.
Not quite as bad as the screaming the mouse does, though.

Those blasted electronic Pest Repellers are a joke. Trust me. There's two of those devices plugged in out in the country.

I've baited the live traps with peanut butter. I've only caught one, but he apparently got peanut butter all over his snout and suffocated.
The REST of the critters keep trippin' the live traps. One of the buggers keeps gettin' pissed, though. I continually find the trap halfway across the room.

I'm seriously debating getting a cat. But that won't happen until I'm out there full time. It worked for Grandmother and Granddaddy.

I DID find a trap at Home Depot that is supposedly a humane trap in that it kills the critter with an electric shock. I'm seriously debating that thing.

But I AM gonna keep track of this thread to see what's worked for others. wink

So what's the rodent situation, Ronda? Any better?

We have to assume by his absence that Beagz was overrun by the varmints... sigh

Well their numbers are down; at least I don't see them scampering around on a daily basis. But I know they're still around and will likely be back with a vengence when the weather turns cold. I must have caught about 30 over the past year. The young ones are easy to catch, but the older ones that survive get very wily. I finally resorted to poison. They have eaten an entire box so far, and it keeps disappearing.

I did a big house clean up in the summer, and the things I discovered were truly disturbing. They had literally been in every single part of the house. Even in my shoes! They had climbed to the top shelf in my closets. They had been in the stove! I had to throw away so many things that couldn't be disinfected. Now it's war. I've had it with being humane; I just want them gone!

We've been talking about getting a cat for a while (not as a mouser, that would just be a bonus), but now I'm concerned that the cat might be harmed if it caught a mouse with poison in it's system.

Aw! Sorry I asked...! shocked hug

And yeah, I'd worry about any cats being exposed to whatever poisons you've used. Where are Streaky and Whizzy when you need them?! Whizzy Streaky

Rhonda,

I recommend the cat. Belinda has done a wonderful job. in fact, I've had no mice nor has the first floor tenant (she also has a cat) while the second floor tenant had mice.

I think if you stop using the poison a bit before getting the cat, you (and the cat) will be fine.
